thoroughly impressed with Maynards voice in 2014. I thought his voice was gone and steadily declining (ie. see 2009 shows) but this the show i saw in Eugene this year was amazing. Maynard still can belt it out
I think this is exactly the type of song that MJK can still sing just fine- the more melodic, less aggressive, type of songs like H. or Descending. The ones he struggles with now tend to be the heavier/more aggressive songs like Parabola, the Grudge, etc. I'm guessing this is part of the reasons why they're not playing 7empest live.
@@enaidealukal9203 I went into last week's gig in Amsterdam expecting to be disappointed by his voice, judging by the apparent decline in live recordings. It was my first time seeing them live in person. I was VERY pleasantly surprised how clean his voice was - even nailing more agressive parts in The Grudge and some other songs. Probably the best he's been since the late 90s/early 2000s!
I think Maynard sings heavenly, it's the pathos that counts, he never lost it 'cuz he's genuine and the lyrics came from his deepest parts.... I mean it's not like manson come on!!!
Hearing Tool is like an understanding what would Pink Floyd become if they only managed to continue create during the mid and late nineties and early 00's.
@@CookieTGX but its not entirely accurate. Floyd's writing style, even at its darkest and heaviest, doesn't come close to the space tool occupies. I don't think they would have ever gone this metal and distorted, though that would have been a cool sound
@@ileutur6863 The similarity to me between both bands is how some of their songs take you on a journey. Re-discovering Tool while high & listening to Lateralus was a trip.
That band...It's like every song is a journey with all kinds of plot twists. Their musicianship, his voice and emotion, everything is so beautiful, even with complicated polyrhythms, everything just makes sense. I'm listening Fear Inoculum constantly for the past 2-3 weeks, and nothing else. And I'm in seventh heaven. Thank you guys for being here, for creating all this magnificent music and sharing it with us.
why's everyone talking about his voice? it's more that he has reinvented what he sings but not really for the better. listen to dylan and what he does time and time again musically when he sings live, astonishing and so good

Anyone know why Maynard doesn’t sing the lines before “remember I’ll always love you…” is it a vicarious thing or are those words he doesn’t sing? Maybe it’s just so he can nail the ending part? Still an amazing performance
Listening to this is weird and amazing, the instrumentation is perfect all the way through but Maynard shows his age while still hitting most if the notes, the emotion is there completely and I almost sense that he’s angry that he can’t sing like he could 20 years ago. It makes me nervous and thankful and sweaty whenever I listen to this. In short, amazing performance
it hurts to hear him try to hit those notes like he used to, but his voice has evolved into a different animal. we all need to accept that he isn’t the flailing crazy man that can belt out a G5 anymore.

@@Disss135 no disrespect to him but you can tell it’s hard for him to get the song out especially during the high pitch moments and they change the lyrics. It’s not a terrible thing everyone gets old but his age really shows in this song.
@@cineman7936 ya but it's still great because he just changed up that part of the song that is too hard to play live so he can nail it which honestly isn't a big deal. Dude is in his 50s and he still sounds better than any band today!
What a great performance and recording! Not a big fan of the way MJK has changed up the chorus here though, love this song just how it is without changing it (well, not counting Salival alternate Pushit but that's almost a completely different song all on its own)
Anyone know why Maynard didnt sing the entirety of the last part? I've watched them do Pushit live at a few of their 2014 shows and was at the Cedar Park, TX show and they are all the same. "Staring down the hole again/hands are on my back again..." He skips the full verse and only finishes with "remember I'll always love you/even as I claw your fucking throat away..." I thought he messed up at the show I was at but then I saw him do the same things at the other shows...wonder if there is a reason.
Well, at first I thought instrumental ly they were dragging it out, like a big finale or something, but in my opinion I think Maynard just missed his timing, then said fuck it, I'll catch my breath and start when I want. With his age, experience, and status; bossman can do such things.
Or....maybe, since Aenima is all about change, maybe he's not terrified anymore. He's aged, learned, evolved as we all do, and he's not comfortable with a couple of those lines. Some artists keep a distance between the art and themselves, others not so much.

Yeah, not familiar with that term either. But I love how his voice does than vibrato in the "terrified of what may co-uh-uhme"part in the other versions, studio or other live performances.
the only song on aenima i don't like. still tool is one of the best things i've ever discovered in life, right up there with star wars and going to the gym. the version on salival is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better, and is more of a justin song. this version, if i recall correctly, was written with paul. but both versions have some of the best maynard vocals of all time
Maynard's pipes were little off, he's getting old. :( Not easy coming to terms with, being one of my favorite vocalists. Still at his worse, not saying he is; he's greater than most at their best.
