it's actually baffling to me why reflection doesn't get more attention. I've been listening to these guys for 25 years, and i truly believe that reflection is their best song. the layers, complexity, and the profound depth of the lyrics blow me away every single time i hear it. thank you for making this video and exposing more people to its brilliance.
There's no other song like it at all. It's very different and mysterious. I've always wanted to cover that song with my friends in a dark room with candles and incense burning.
SatanDynastyKiller It syncs up with weird memories in my head of things I was doing when I first heard the album. Like playing the alien levels in Perfect Dark
This is the song (Reflections specifically) that originally got me into Tool. When I was a young lad (19/20yo) I was round at a small house party getting high as fuck. At some point someone put on Lateralus and I remember sitting on the couch, totally spacing out, and this haunting "before I pine away...." was playing and I was totally absorbed by it. I asked my friend the following day what we had been listening to, and that's how I found out about Tool. I bought Lateralus and listened to it endlessly for weeks. Then went on to get the rest of their albums. As an aside note, Tool are the only band that I own their entire catalogue on physical CD. Including a bootleg CD recorded at a gig in Glasgow. Fucking amazing band! And now I get great enjoyment watching other people discover and hear my favourite songs for the first time.
CAPELLASAMPIERE i mean opeth is far superior melodically, i dont even think that can be questioned. But tool is better overall and i enjoy them more so i agree with ya
I appreciate Jim's reaction to Tool music; he's authentic, genuine and intellectual. Refreshing to witness someone truly enjoy and respect a great band!
As others have said…Reflection. I just come back to that song over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. There’s just something about it that doesn’t let go. I fear it will never let go. It’s got me. My favorite song of all time.
Crucify the ego refers to the sensation one gets from a very intense hallucinogenic trip. Total loss of ego, or shattering the ego is best described as a total loss of visual connection with reality. The senses cease to function in the normal way. Merging with space, other objects, or the universe. The loss of reality becomes so severe that it defies explanation. It’s an incredible feeling. Helps make sense of the world and your perception of it.
matt matt hey don’t say that, I’ve also been lucky enough to have seen them live but don’t be so arrogant to put people who haven’t had the chance beneath you. All tool fans brother :)
Hello Jim, I came here because of Marillion and never had heard of Tool before hearing their songs on your channel. I love the variety of music genre you offer us the video for this song, somekind of tail moving along the music over the human head, this reminds me that music can affect all your body, brains muscles and bones and your psychic aura if you believe in such things I enjoyed watching the video as much as the music, sometimes music is much more than sound waves hitting your ear drums, the beating leaf and the colors helped me visualize the music, if you listen to this live with the drums sound reverberating on your bones, it must be a wonderful spiritual experience
I listened to this driving into a storm in Florida, it was the thunder during disposition and reflection and then I hit the heavy rain and lighting when triad it was spiritual event.
Damn Jim I was sure I understood most of the meanings behind a lot of tool songs, but every video of yours I come away with some new possibilities I hadn't thought of. Nicely done as always, cheers sir 🍻
Jim thank you for posting this with synced speed, it makes a ton of difference and yes I watched it again, because why not :) For your next Tool reaction whenever it may be - Please do "Parabol + Parabola" And for the Not-Tool Reaction - Please do "Blind Guardian - Nightfall"
I just can’t stop listening to Reflection at the moment, it’s so good, the whole Holy Trinity is amazing, I love playing Triad on guitar, how Adam stands so still and plays this shit is amazing and so composed
I love everything about the song. The middleastern vibe, MJK's vocals, DC's drumming, AJ and JC just killing it on guitar and bass. Oh my god there are no words. I'm always overwhelmed when I hear it. Stunning.
Once again, I'm glad you enjoyed this Jim. Your interpretation of the song is fascinating. Even after all these years these songs still give me goosebumps.
Jim, the way you listen and react is much as I have myself, and it is a joy to see someone "get it". Reflection is one of my top 3 Tool pieces, and it is a true pleasure to see and hear your reaction. I know I'm not alone in this, either (as of this writing, the zero negative votes speaks to this). Welcome to the onion that is Tool.... layered to the core. Thank you for doing this.... all of this.
I found you through your tool reactions. I subbed because I love that you truly listen to the music and seem to be open minded with everything you listen to. Thank you!
I like that he doesn't pause the song to talk like so many reactors seem to do. And he truly loves the music. Another reactor I like is Robert Houghton with his son Gauge. It's been fun to watch him become a Tool fan.
The only thing you can say about this "songs" is, that it is a masterpiece of modern art. Nothing less than that. The feelings you go through this songs when you listen deep is not explainable. You have to experience it for yourself.
Jim I get a kick out of your reactions. I’ve been a TOOL fan going on 25+ years now. Just turned 50 and it still gives me goosebumps. I’ve had the great pleasure of seeing them 5 times. Still the best shows I’ve ever seen. To really appreciate Tool you have to dedicate the time to listen to the album in it’s entirety. Start to finish. Keep up the great work you’re doing!
Miss G It’s a masterpiece 😭😭 it gives me goosebumps, has brought me to tears, and I constantly hear things that I’ve missed on previous listens. It’s amazing!
I DO feel a lot better after your videos! And we can all just listen to the tracks anywhere else. But we are here for a reason. Thank you kindly good sir!
Its on the album just how it is. Its listed Disposition/Reflection/Triad. 20 min piece. Great video, im going to enjoy your reaction as a genuine music fan and not just order you to listen to whatever band while glossing over the video.
"That is inseperable. That is one piece of music. You cannot listen to the individual parts...It's like...picking out a song from a Pink Floyd album and listening to it in isolation. You can't." Now you know how all of us feel watching you pick apart the masterpiece that is Lateralus! Really appreciate the content, keep it up! If you haven't listened to Tool by the album in your spare time, make sure you do that. Cheers!
Well, you can pick out individual songs and listen, but you’re doing yourself and the music a disservice when you do that. Although Tool’s songs aren’t as obviously contiguous as Pink Floyd’s, these albums are one whole piece of art.
When I saw TOOL at Red Rocks, Morrison CO in the late 90s that interlude between Reflection and Triad went on for at least 5 min. People were freaking out and it was just awesome. That was the show that blew me away with Pushit.
This just seems to take you on a journey. It’s amazing how articulate this band is. Everyone gets something different from listening to Tool. You really can’t explain it and you can’t put a finger on it. No one will ever reach their sound.
I remember really getting this album for the first time. It was a few weeks after it came out. I had listened to it several times but I just couldn't "get" it. I finally sat down and really listened to it, and it DID put me into a trance. All my senses but my hearing were reduced to a minimum. I wasn't asleep I was just *there*. Floating and listening. And then "Faaip de Oiad" started and it is so freaky and weird. I was still in this trance state but it became a frantic nightmare. It builds and builds and ends with this really loud electronic ZAP! Snapped me right out of it like the band had kicked me right in the balls. Very unpleasant. I always felt they did that on purpose. Ha Ha you bastards. I get the joke.
Reflection is probably my favourite tool song, I'm sure it's not technically their best, but the mood it brings out in me it's next to none. BTW no offence but you remind me of Stewart Pearson from In the Thick of It
Imagine having sound waves get you high and stab your ego instead of requiring you to crucify it yourself..... welp. You just did. Feels fucking great, don't it? Lol. Tool army for life.
Ey friend i think i saw your comment on a video of someone who did an instrumental cover of lateralus. Good to see you're active in the tool community.
In one of your earlier reviews you listened to Aenima and said that Maynard is really, really angry. You then said something to the effect of "c'mon it's not that bad". I think in some respects you misread what Maynard is saying but that is really ok because 1) it was your first lesson and 2) Maynard/Tool is about thinking for your self. What I would say is that in Aenima he says words to the effect of "don't call me apathetic, try to read in between the lines." To me, reading in between the lines is kinda where Reflection comes in. Tool is musically dark and can deal with dark topics but it is actually very hopeful to me. Re-read that last stanza in the lyrics. The whole thing is important but the end is "Bringing out our hope and reason". Which is what I desire. Gotta run. Always enjoy your Tool reactions.
“That is more than the sum of its parts... I know don’t what to say about it... I’m struggling with the right words for this” We feel the exact same way Jim. We were all completely blown away hearing this masterpiece(s) for the first time.
THANK YOU!! Btw, little bit of trivia, all the "unexpected sounds" and samples are triggered by Adam the guitarist. He has an Access Virus B synth attached to a Roland PK-5 foot pedal that he uses to trigger all the weird sounds live while he's playing everything else. He has really good concentration to say the least.
This is my favorite transcendental song by this incredible mind-blowing band. The second I heard TOOL for the very first time, I almost yelled to my friend playing, "WHO IS THAT?" - circa 1991.
Not to compare Metallica and Tool, but that was my reaction hearing For Whom the Bell Tolls for the first time. I had heard some of the songs from the Black Album that were being played on the radio, but nothing earlier. A neighbor had his boombox out in the driveway and that first bell ring caught my ear. I stopped what I was doing and just listened. Tool came to me a little differently.
I think "Reflection" is a reference to a challenge. A promise of the best efforts of four musicians, moreso than normal. I think this song is a battle of weaponized talent first summoned and conquered alone, and then reflected outwards towards each other. These guys are unreal.
This is my favourite piece of music (all 3). I interpret it as; "Achieving the perfection of one's own self before the ultimate doosmday". Doomsday having mutliple meanings with "Triad" (the sound of it) coupled with the hidden track at the end of the album (I dread to spell it).
Subbed for tool I caught the first tool video you did, excellent, as were all so far! My next fave band is Reverend Horton Heat, I have never seen anyone react to them.
Lonesome Clown by Amadeus Awad. It features Anneke van Giersbergen (the Dutch singer that works with Devin Townsend a lot). Also, more Ayreon :) The Sixth Extinction, Isis and Osiris, Amazing Flight.
I seen these guys in Melbourne back in 2000 or 2001 maybe, reflection was incredible almost creepy, the stage setup & Adams guitar sound were out of this world.
