It is a shame the original got taken down because it was magic. I sat and watched this with my mom all the way through and we were both in tears. Amazing song, and it kicked me square in the arse about seeing my parents more while they are still alive. To make something like this for your dead loved one and spread it to the world for people to feel the emotions, it's pure magic and a damn good deed to humankind.

If you’ve ever lost a parent this song epitomizes to me what it feels like. The pain, anger and overwhelming love of it are represented in this song are flawlessly. This is just on a different level. Sometimes we have to acknowledge the limitations of words. It's ok to be at a loss for words and just feel what the song makes you feel. We can see what you feel, and because we felt/feel the same way about this song, your reaction is spot on. Few bands have the ability to stir the gauntlet of emotions like Tool does, and this is why Tool's fans are forever grateful they make the music they do. Keep spiraling out, Jim.

this is the only track by Tool i can't listen often. it can ruin a good day for sure and it can help you on a bad one, either. so most times i listen to the 10000 days album, i skip this 2-parted ode to Maynards mother, surely not in disrespect of the work the band has put into it. Jim, your reaction just underlines the insecurity how to deal with death in general, the unawareness about what happens with us. I don't have an answer, too.

This song is hard to listen to...very powerful. And it makes even stronger when you know that Maynard is probably an atheist and kinda hates/despises religion because of what he's experienced as a child when he's mom became paralyzed and her church acted like she was being punished by something that she'd done, instead of helping them. So for Maynard to put his beliefs aside and write a song about her faith it's quite noble.
@stefanforrer2573
@stefanforrer2573 5 лет назад
i maybe wouldn't call it noble... but certainly is an indication of how much love he had/has for his mother
@obw1r3d
@obw1r3d 5 лет назад
@@stefanforrer2573 I think that's true, and I also think it's true that Maynard has matured in his view of the religion he criticized for so many years (understandably so, if you put yourself in his shoes). Maybe realizing there's something to it after all, since he admits his "arrogance" with the "burden of proof tossed upon the believers", all the while his mom was his "witness" "eyes" and "evidence" the last word being the key here. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't go as far as to say that he believes in God, but I'd say he has gained respect for the faith, since it's clearly what carried his mom through the difficult times. It's such a great song, and I'm glad he wrote it even though it must have been painful to do so.

Dan Inbari I caught on about two years after Aenima and was in college when Lateralus dropped. Still vividly remember buying the CD and popping into the car hearing the opening to Grudge. That said, when 10,000 days album dropped I was working and didn’t fully dig in until about 6+months later. Boy was that a mistaaaaaake!! So many classics and this album, for me, has the best lyric I’ve ever heard/read. “Repugnant is the creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of our fleeting time here.” I DID NOT MAKE THAT SAME MISTAKE WRT FEAR INNOCULUM!!

Jim, it's the perfect reaction. The beauty of the song is it's true.. it's music in it's truest form. It wasn't made to appeal to a mass audience or to be catchy.. it's just heartfelt and honest and your reaction was equally true to those things. I remember when the album came out.. I was 17 years old and listening to it in the living room of my parent's house in the middle of the night and I remember the sweeping guitars panning from left to right and just going on a very intimate and personal journey for this song. I always come back to that moment when I listen to it. If I may, please check out Disposition/Reflection/Triad. It's in my opinion their magnum opus and when Tool was at their creative zenith. I’m so sorry, music has power to change emotion or to drag up memories, feelings and emotions you thought were long buried. That’s why I believe it really does have magical qualities. And also once music is out in the world it doesn’t belong to the song writer anymore, everyone owns it as it becomes very personal to them. I hope you’re coping ok in these difficult times and you can find some other music that brings happier memories and thoughts. 👍🏼

Grief makes you think and do things you would not normally have thought or done. I get the reason for these songs. And, though they are gorgeous pieces of work that bring you on Judith Marie's journey, if they never perform them again, that would be okay too. There is no wrong reaction to these works, just as in grief. And for the whole band to agree to help him through it with their musical gifts was incredible. Thanks for this. Truly.

This was a great reaction Jim, don't feel bad about it. You said in two minutes some of the most insightful thoughts I've heard on any reaction to Tool. Fucking cheers again man!

Every time I listen to this song it genuinely leaves me a blubbering wreck...you can feel every ounce of mjk’s emotion that he poured into it....a song as crushing as it is beautiful...the lives that Judith has saved through her sons music alone will never be fully accounted for...rest beautiful lady..!!!

I think what you couldn't say about the songs speaks as much as what you could. I am glad I got to see you experience this and relive the emotional journey with you. Ultimately I think that is why these songs exist, as a way for listeners to share that journey and bear the beauty and sadness of losing a life together. Thank you Jim.

Fantastic reaction. ♥️ This is my FAVORITE Tool song(s)… and that’s saying something cuz they simply do not have a bad song. But Wings is different, as you said. It allows you to feel every aspect, every layer, of loss. The grief, the despair, the rage at it all. Every emotion individually and all at once. Every time I hear it, I thank the universe that Maynard decided to write it, record it and share it with us. Like you said, we are privileged to listen to it. That’s exactly how I feel. Truly, truly one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Of any genre. A haunting and personal requiem that is absolutely unmatched.
