I have to concur. There are thousands of virtuoso shredders and rhythm guitarists who play astounding guitar lines. However for Jones his lines are very intricate but more importantly everything he writes is instantly memorable. If you can write a song and have people immediately. As well get them grooving and enjoy your music. That's the most important aspect of being a musician IMHO.
@@nderohan This is the extended version. They have been playing it live forever now. It's even better than the album version. They also play an extended version of Schism. It starts about 3:45 into the song here.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GVuGjHf3p5I.html
That was my first thought the first time I saw them live. No antics or over exaggerations. Just pure music. His style and stance remind me on The Ox (John Entwhistle). Very subdued but damn, the sound put out!
That’s one of my favorite things about Adam he fuckin rocks these nasty solos that you head bang to but he just sits and looks like meh it’s just a Tuesday for me...
I'm pretty sure he's in "the zone." My hubby and stepson play, and when they get "in the zone," as they call it, they are completely in the song, and my husband says, "the audience disappears, and I forget I can't play guitar for a while" (He can play...lol...especially when he is "in the zone).
They also make improvements to their songs which is my favorite thing about them...adding in little easter egg riffs or drum fills. Every show I've been to has been amazing and they don't just show up for the check like most "rock bands" and all pop/rappers. who dance and hold the microphone out for you to sing for them since they can't sing without and audio engineer making their voices sound half decent.
Adam is a monster!! Disgusting and baffling talent. No one is this band is a slouch. Each has amazing skill and insight into the ways to manipulate their instruments to perfection but Adam is unbelievable!
@@dronepro7316 Years ago I saw a Guitar Magazine article with Adam and Kirk Hammond from Metalica. My first thought was, how does Kirk relate to Adam?? No contest!!!
Adam’s the only guitarist I’ve ever seen to have a pedal loop that he runs on just for 1 note and then turns it off again . Every detail is maticulously cared for , even if you don’t notice it that much
@@chriswilkinson7636 exactly. They make for an even trippier act by standing so still and by switching off all lights between songs and not talking with the audience.
100%. I am always blown away by how calculated and precise he is with the feedback and all of the muting . Pretty incredible. Tool is the greatest rhythm section ever to do it.
I love where Adam goes at 2:30 so cool. This is his talent. Riff. Tone. Minimalism. And Justin is just digging it. Then at 5:20 it just becomes so insanely good. Thanks for posting.
The repetitive patterns in Tool songs are so damn hypnotic and so damn seductive, even more so because there are always tiny little changes in the way same licks are played, and Stinkfist is perhaps the shiniest example. Unbelievable band, one of those rare bands in which every member is irreplaceable. I only started paying attention to them in my thirties, but boy oh boy, am I glad that happened! Discovering Tool is one of the best things that ever happened to me.
That Gibson CRUNCH THO!!! Love the fact that this band is so progressive yet has so much culture built into the background...Catch these guys Live. I'm telling you. This will probably be the last band of it's kind to represent music this well...
@@jonassabatini I have 2 Gibsons and apparently, you don't. Everyone in the industry understands the crunch a Gib produces. Why are you even trying to argue that?
my favorite part of this video is that even though this is a front-row seat capture, you can only see minor glimpses of Maynard doing weird shit in the background
I was front row at a tool show once. 1993 Lollapalooza in Saint Paul, MN there were about 60 people in the crowd and stage diving was A-ok. I chatted with the drummer for a few minutes. Smoking hash on the steps we met Fishbones trumpet player. I took a half hit of 4-way window pane that morning. Man, the old days ruled.
One of the few instances where the live version eclipses the studio recording. Here's how I describe this song: It's like that cool blast of air on your brain when the axe cleaves your skull.
Was so hopeful that they were going to play it at that show and they always seem to not play the song I’m dying to hear like oh well maybe next time if there’s a next time

yeah, that new part in the middle is fucking incredible. if they ever do, i just hope JOE BARESSI LETS ADAM PLAY HIS DIEZELS, unlike most of 10,000 days and fear innoculum. adam plays the best amps on earth and joe won't even let them on the fucking albums
@@stopit2964 wait, there aren’t any Deizels on Fear Inoculum? There are on 10,000 days for certain, fear sounds more like there aren’t but it still does
@@NickGroves-iv7mx only tempest and pneuma for sure. culling voices, i think, has them. the title track to fear innoculum is mostly orange, invincible is mostly rivera, descending is mostly orange again. i read the liner notes to the album, he thanks orange and rivera on them. he occasionally makes the third amp in his live setup a rivera, but its rarely for more than a show or two. he goes right back to two diezels and his longtime marshall. I'm also hearing EMG pickups on tempest, and on culling voices, who he also thanks in the liner notes. this is a bummer as EMG's kind of dominate over the sound of amplifiers, but the seymour duncan's adam uses rightfully allow the amplifier sound to be heard, and allow for a lot more articulation and difference in volume based on how hard he's picking. EMG's don't really allow for that. i don't hear any diezels anywhere on the entire 10k days album. if there are, joe baressi compressed and eq-ed them to the point to where they no longer sound like diesels. seriously i am fed up with how he's been screwing around with tool's sound.
Wait, so there's a lot of bass? I haven't been lucky enough to catch them live, but I'd love to. I've seen Bassnectar a lot, you wanna talk about sonic vibrations lol.
HA! Holy shit! I’ve been saying that to everyone through this whole COVID pandemic! Too funny! On a side note, at this juncture I have to at least admit the pure eeriness of the first song released from their past 4 albums have been spot on. Stinkfist - overstimulation from the computing/internet boom. Schism - A very strong divide between humanity just prior to 9/11. Vicarious - By 10,000 Days we were all somehow living vicariously through another. Fear Inoculum - COVID-19 pandemic hits. Obviously we can all somewhat see the path ahead but to write incredible songs about it and have the album released prior to it becoming reality is pretty incredible. Such a badass band in every single way.
as someone who's been playing guitar since 2001, I'm really sick and tired of all the shit that the super prog shred "everything has to be a solo" people giving adam jones shit. they look at the guitar tabs and see a 1 finger power chord in drop d sometimes and think he's not good, but after seeing tool for the first time from close to the front in front of adam, i just wanna say his style is so much more nuanced and his choice in chords is a lot weirder than people realize or can decipher through the gain. the music is so fucking fantastic that even if it was easy to play, it wouldn't matter, but he's doing a lot of little things in the songs that I'm not even sure how to describe (like the almost sweep arpeggio raking he does in the first soft half of invincible, and the pull off roll thing he does on jambi) he REALLY IS one of the greatest guitarists to ever walk this planet. not everything has to be a reverse tapping sweep on an 8 string.
Anyone criticizing Adam cannot and should not be taken seriously. They don't like how he plays? Fine. But to suggest any lack of quality or skill? They can point that finger up their ass and try to do better. Very few alive can!
for both audio and video, this is the best video on youtube of this song ALSO, the new parts they put in this song in the middle before the last chorus are fucking amazing. tool was ALMOST tool before justin, they became tool when he joined. he really is the best fucking bass player on earth
@@Overton_Windows yeah, i am downplaying that tone on undertow. justins tone on all the albums he's been on is inherently better, also better compliments adam's guitar tones, also better compliments danny's drum tones. justin is better at the "bass parts that are like guitar parts" thing, as well as the traditional "play the root note of the chord" thing. tool was 75 percent tool before justin joined, and now tool is 100 percent tool.
Tool was one of those bands that brought the bass out of the background and placed it squarely in the foreground. Paul was crucial to that movement. Just listen to Intolerance and the bass is pretty much playing lead. My 20-year-old self at the time hadn't really heard anything like that before. That said, ultimately Paul wasn't a good fit as the band evolved, and Justin has stepped in to help shape the quintessential Tool sound. And I do LOVE Justin's playing. Sometimes I get chills listening to his basslines. In other words, both Paul and Justin are great, but they represent different phases of the band's evolution over the years.
Lol people like you hate admitting that without paul, there would be no tool. I think the songwriting and playing on undertow was probably some of their absolute best.
@@godhandvoid9795 paul helped get the band started but it wasn't better songwriting at all. not even sort of, not even kind of. with justin, they pushed EVERY SINGLE AREA of their songwriting to its peak potential: the super heavy side, the super soft side, the super middle eastern side, the super electronic influenced side, the lyrics, the vocals. all four instruments in the band individually got better, and the band chemistry improved. I've seen people like you go on and on about how tool was heavier with paul....uh, not a chance. maynard just screamed more back then. none of the heavy riffs from the paul era are even worth mentioning next to hooker with a penis, ticks and leeches, jambi, and 7empest, to name a few. the soft side expanded more on 10k days, intention, the salival live version of pushit (way more than the original version that they wrote with paul). paul is a great musician but justin smokes him. its just how it is.
We were there this night. In my 63 years this has to be the best concert I've ever been to and that's saying alot! We got there a bit late and almost had to leave because our seats were taken and it was jammed packed!! Sold out show. Somehow we ended up in the ViP section LOL--OMG what a fantastic night and show. These guys make your insides vibrate LOL
Yep. 97’, the second round of the Aenima tour was hands down the best. Just saw them the other night. They never disappoint. But if you saw them in 97’ you already know. I await the 20 year olds response to why I’m wrong.
As a guitarist I try to always be in front of the guitarist at shows so this is amazing. I have yet to see Tool live so this is priceless! Thank you again!!! ♥️
The greatest gift to music is the sounds of the underground throughout the generations. Still not played on radio because it doesn't deserve to - its for you and you alone. All hail Tool.
Tool you did it again with a lot of songs and the music that you give to the people and to the crowd now that is so perfect to play as many songs as you need to play those are you're strengths and talents tool mananerd as a musician and singer songwriter you can give it all for the fans metal is for forever rock fan alex
Gojira...ask any true educated metal head..they will say gojira is one of the best metal bands to ever come out..not to mention there drummer is the best drummer to ever drum and perform in metal..PERIOD..I'm going to end this saying tools drummer is like 2nd on my list for all time rock or metal drummers
The way these guys evolve their original songs is just divine..It's never the same. They always add some shit in after awhile as if just to entertain themselves.
never paid this close attention to the guitar before even tho it's not complex or speedy riff solos the way he use the guitar effects and timing on them the dynamics it's perfect sounds heaven
