George questioning the groove right before the grooviest section and doubting the payoff right before one of my favorite Tool payoffs was funny to me.

Same. That whole beginning preamble I'm like "Just get to the breakdown guys. Y'all are gonna lose your MINDS over the breakdown!" 😆 Honestly though, I think The Grudge is another one that takes about 2-3 spins before it really sinks its hooks into you. Bet this is one that George and Ryan will wind up saying they LOVE over time.

The Grudge - sets the tone of the theme of lateralus perfectly being the opening track. It marks a turning point in Tool’s career even. This album transcends grudges, bitterness, anger and fighting to self reflection,learning, teaching and ultimately self actualization. That 25+ second yell lets out the grudge and bitterness of the past that allows Tool to stop the anger spiral that many get trapped into. Once you ‘let go’ you can actually grow and learn from it and teach others and use the insight gained from life experiences in much more powerful ways..

A Saturn Return happens approximately every 29.5 years (i.e., the duration of Saturn's orbit around the sun), which means it lands in the same place in the sky it did when you were born roughly around the time you turn 29. Generally, it “returns” for approximately 2.5 to three years.

Tool has always fascinated me. Their music requires much more effort to truly unpack everything. For that reason it doesn’t always click right away as I have to go back many times to really experience the song from different aspects before I can interpret and understand the music. I was fortunate enough to hear Tool live for the 1st time as Ozzfest 2001, UK. They opened with ‘The Grudge’ and I had no idea what hit me. It was going over my head completely. But as I started to watch Danny, Adam and Justin I started to realise how complex and interwoven the music was. Absolutely blew my mind. The Grudge is still and will always be my favourite Tool song for this reason.

The key is almost impossible to get on the first listen; how well the story ties to the music. Quiet rage, repetitive mantra, seething, outburst, reflection, release. Even better when you know their writing style. They recorded the track before Maynard's lyrics and he pulled that story from what he felt while listening. Perfection.
@PCamron90
@PCamron90 Месяц назад
The Saturn comes back around lyric is in reference to Saturn's orbit around the sun which takes about 28 years, and what Maynard is basically conveying is that this is the age where you should be able to realize what it is that you're holding on to and refusing to let go, and you can either try and move past it, or hold on to them for the rest of your life. That's basically the gist of it, with a little wiggle room of a bit broader interpretation.

I doubt this is anyones favorite Tool song upon first listen; there is much going on musically and lyrically that it can be tough to get into. After over 20 years of listening to Tool, however, this is my absolute favorite song. The message is simple, but so necessary.

Tool and The Mars Volta were two bands where after I got into them I would always give music that is new to me a second or even third chance. It's exactly what Ryan described here with the Matrix thing.

"Saturn comes back around to show you everything Let's you choose what you will and will not see and then Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again Spits you out like a child, light and innocent" Yes it has astrological reference, but the direct words seem to me to point to more the symbol of Saturn and what it represents, rather than a specific Astrological "movement" Saturn is seen as the bringer of Karma/cycles throughout your life, also the ruler of material which is the second line in this section,. The "Drags you down like a stone", Saturn is also considered "the Teacher" through lessons in life and also lord of time, and this line is IMO a reference to these aspects, and also Saturn's mass, it has a similar affect in the Solar system, it drags lesser planets a little (as does Jupiter ...who was son of Saturn to the Romans, and the only one of Saturn's offspring that escaped being eaten by Saturn) The last part about "Spits you out like a child, light and innocent" is a reference to the Roman God Saturn mythology of him eatinghis own off spring, because he feared they would over throw him, but in this line Saturn is spitting the child out, so possibly a birth metaphor a section of lyrics prior "Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end Saturn ascends, comes round again Saturn ascends, the one, the ten Ignorant to the damage done" The Ascends are astrological movement references which are meant to bring back unresolved Karma, cyclical patterns in a persons life, in this case the unresolved issue would be "the Grudge" . "the One the Ten" 10 is associated with Saturn, and in numerology and the Tarot 1 is the beginning of a Journey and 10 is completion of a journey, its a very poetic and metaphorical ways of saying "from beginning to end" and also that every beginning is an end and every end is a beginning. A Grudge is absolutely associated with Saturn in Astrology Tarot etc. Its would be deemed "Saturnian" in traits, and Saturn is associated with Capricorn which is the root of the word "Capricious", and Saturn was certainly a Capricious god in Roman mythology (for Greek gods switch Kronos for Saturn and Zeus for Jupiter everything still has the same symbolism and meanings)

This is a song for Tool fans. Not for music fans. It is songs like these that separates casual fans from hardcore ones. The gatekeepers will tell you. " If you get this song, then you get Tool." But the break down is just amazing.

I think it's more of being able to catch a groove that's a bit obfuscated and hidden, plus being solidly in 5/4 (or 10/8) the entire time. The time signature never changes but Danny doesn't show where the groove is until well into the second half

Crazy George's intro for Betterhelp is exactly what this song is about. I 100% agree with the groove commentary. One of my favorite things about a new Tool song is not knowing where it's going and sort of being "lost" on my first journey through. I'm sure that same thing makes reactions tough. Appreciate you guys!

Was thinking the exact same re Betterhelp. The way George feels about this song is how it’s supposed to feel because it’s a tightly wound knot that needs to come unraveled. Perfect comment from Ryan that this is setting the tone as an opener. It’s a state to pass through. Let go.

15:03 The very first time I hard this riff (Defining! Confining! And sinking deeper!) I thought it was the heaviest riff imaginable. 20+ years later, I'm still crushed by this riff every time it drops. And the drop-in just makes it even heavier. Absolutely devastating riff. Glad you guys finally got to this one. Keep listening to it, because it definitely grows on you. Tool is one of those bands that teach the listener patience. For many pieces of music, you have to listen to it to the very end to fully grok it.

There's such a groove to this song, and once you feel it you'll feel it. You can definitely headbob to this entire song I promise. It's a slow headbob even though the tempo feels faster. A halftime headbob. I know I can't put the groove in your head with words but definitely consider sitting with it. WEAR the GRUDGE like a CROWN. of NEGaTIVity, LET'S you CHOOSE what you WILL, and WILL not TOLerate... (Okay this is my attempt, try headbobbing to the capitalized parts)
