Tool The Grudge Reaction!! 

The 'reverse entropy' effect is very real with Tool. I've been experiencing it for about 25 years now. Not only has the band and albums improved along the way, but my enjoyment of each song only improves with each listen.

Alright let me take you to school haha TLDR: Saturn = Chronus, father of Zeus Saturn is Chronus' name in the Roman pantheon From the moment the titan Chronus kills his father Uranus, he knows that his own children are destined to kill him as well. The grudge is the malice that Chronus holds for his fate as well as his children. In order to attempt to overcome his fate, Chronus ate all his children as soon as they were born, except Zeus, who was swapped for a STONE that Chronus then swallowed instead. Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity. Calculate what we will or will not tolerate. Desperate to control all and everything. Unable to forgive your scarlet letterman. Chronus, King of the Titans,deciding to take his fate into his own hands. The scarlet letterman are his own children, every time he sees them he is reminded of his fate. Clutch it like a cornerstone. Long story, but Zeus ends up making Chronus vomit up his siblings i.e. Poseidon, Hades, etc, who are still alive in Chronus' stomach. Saturn comes back around. Give away the stone = give up attempting to control fate and embrace it instead Oceans = chaos/nature/fate Chronus is commonly symbolized by lead, Zeus is commonly symbolized with gold. (I also believe that the alchemists were strongly influenced by mythology, but spoke in symbolic language to disguise their beliefs out of fear of prosecution for heresy by the Church) This is just my interpretation, but I think it's pretty compelling. The song (as well as the myth itself of course) is highly allegorical and speaks of the cycles both between generations as well as within ourselves and how to possibly overcome them, if that's even possible.

Vin is becoming a wrench. They do not have a bad album. I have never been a huge tool fan but I can appreciate art and a unbelievable discography.

the excitement I see in you two when you guys are learning more and more about tool, reminds me of when I first became obsessed with Pink Floyd. I've listened to the wall over 1000 times now. I wrote 1000+ word essays in high school dissecting the lyrics of the album, I even learned to play the entire album (minus some harder solos), and played a 15m medley as my final exam in guitar class. I think this is why I love your channel so much, because I did the same level of lyrical analysis of the wall.

This is probably the best reaction video I've ever seen. The depth of the lyrics and then the impact of those ideas in your lives and the lives of others.

I always took "hang on or be humbled again" as the justification of a person holding a grudge, or the fear/cost that they are unwilling to make. To let go of a grudge often means to admit your own faults, and thus be humbled. A stubborn person holding a hates the idea of being humbled. "I MUST hang on to this grudge! I've spent so much time and energy on it! If I let go now, it will be humiliating, And yet, this is exactly what we need to do in these situations. Let go. Admit the fault, have humility, and move on.

The “Holy Gift” album is nonsense spouted by Tool’s most obnoxious hardcore fans. Even Adam Jones and Danny Carey have stated in interviews the Holy Gift is crap, Lateralus was released in order the way the band wanted you to hear it.

I totally didn't think about it until watching this - but the whole thing of "leaden grudges" fits in with the Saturn imagery as well. You know the little astrological symbols for the different planets? The symbol for Saturn was used in alchemy to represent lead. And of course one of the goals of alchemy was to transmute lead into gold.

Lateralus is my favorite record ever. I consider it the dark side of the moon of the 21st century.

The "Holy Gift" is bs. People look too far into the things that aren't important and ignore the things that are. Also, Thelema is Alestair Crowley's school of thought, and Danny Cary is related to him, I think. Another fun fact is that TOOL is Adam Jones' band and Lateralus (the song and riff) came from Justin Chancellor, their bassist.

They did it on purpose ... Tool...or at least Maynard... is pretty big on people figuring things like that out on their own...thats why there are no lyric sheets...they want you to listen

Vin I'm so impressed that you seriously took the time and did the research on this song/ album. It took me 10 years of finding articles from this very introverted band and going to song meanings websites and putting things together forming an opinion ect . You did this in weeks. Props my brother.

Definately changed my life and perspective as a person with bipolar disorder. Big fan of Tools from the early 90’s and when this album released I was 32 years old. Hard to imagine or convey the impactfullness and wisdom garnered from this album (more so than any other). I still listen to it religiously.

There's a tool album called undertow that I would highly recommend along with an awesome EP called opiate.

A constant theme running through this album is how letting go leads you to some sort of enlightenment and freedom. Here specifically, let the grudge go and be in control of your own personal journey. You guys got that, but the reason the album as a whole is bigger than the sum of its parts is because of this central theme.

I love how they let Maynard “let go” with that scream, then let Danny “let go” with that outro.

From what I've noticed, Tool wants us to figure certain things out ourselves.

Great analysis, but I do have a disagreement. “Saturn ascends, Choose one or ten, Hang on or be humbled again.” Here you said that “hang on” is parallel to 1, but I think it’s reversed. How are you humbled for holding onto a grudge? When you’re humbled is when you admit the fault of holding the grudge for so long, and it’s humbling to admit that to the other party. So IMO, it’s reversed on the second line.

Lateralus (song) originally had the working title of 9-8-7 due to the time signatures of the chorus of the song changing from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8. 987 is also the 16th number of the Fibonacci sequence.

Also the choice of specifying lead to gold is a reference to the holy grail of Alchemy, the philosophers stone, which would turn lead into gold. This heavy stone of a grudge becomes a philosophers stone of sorts to yourself the moment you can let it go. Possessing this grudge is poisonous like lead but being able to let it go is golden. Golden for your personal growth and maturity.

About the interludes, IMO you should just put them together with the songs that follow. When you hear the album often enough, they kinda start belonging together anyway, i.e. eon blue apocalypse + the patient, mantra + schism, parabol + parabola and disposition + reflection + triad are all package deals to me.

"The Holy Gift" reminds me of Dark Side Of The Moon sync perfectly with Wizard of Oz movie. You have to check that theory it's pretty wild.

33:30 Vin dropping some real wisdom about letting grudges go. We don't grow as people or achieve our goals holding grudges. Some people are ignorant but being able to dissociate from somebody's insults or accusations with the attitude that "I hear you but i don't recognise myself by the accusation or word you're using.!" It is very enlightened. The person using that word is the one with low character. They have to use it to try to empower themselves. Reminds me of Daryl Davis. A Musician who converted many of the top KKK members by simply getting to know them and not being offended by their ignorance. The KKK members who quit often give him their robes and hoods as a symbolic thanks. Because their lives are no longer consumed by prejudice. Their focus is no longer weak minded hate that never gave them any happiness or sense of accomplishment anyway.

I was driving to work on 9/11/2001 listening to this song when my wife called me to tell me that hijacked planes were flying into buildings in New York. Of course, I thought she was exaggerating. To this day, whenever I hear this song, I remember how history changed at that moment...

Yall did a great job of doing research and understanding the song Lateralus. The last step of understanding to take is to see the message within the over-arching story of the lyrics of Lateralus. The spiral is what he says to represent the fibonacci sequence and the fibonacci sequence is a numerical representation of nature. So when he says to "swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human," he is saying to push ourselves to the edge of our nature so we "may just go where no one's been." You can see the underlying point expressed throughout all of the lyrics in the song, it is beautiful.

10:17 I used to write music and I can see how Maynard thinks it's a gimmick. Finding smart little secrets to hide in your songs is one of the easiest things to do and actually, that was one of the first things I tried to do when I had just started writing music and was trying to think of myself as smart. The more you learn though, the more you realize it's really not what being a mature artist is all about, just trying to find meaningless secrets and trying to hide them in songs.

I'd say musically this is the closest sounding to something from that record.

It's the Phi ratio that accrues in nature (sacred geometry) There are shapes that accure as well (Metetrons cube being one) . I believe Meteron is (gods scribe). I find with Tool that there is so much to take in musically that there are songs I gravitate to first and songs I don't. Then a year later the songs I first dismissed become my favorite songs on the albums. I saw that Joe rogan pod cast with Maynard, did he use the word gimmick? I think he said it happened by accident but I can't remember, it was a while ago. You mentioned the bible (I don't remember the word you used) retells the same stories through out the book. I saw a Jordan Peterson lecture where he mentions that and had a "chart" with lines connecting where the stories are retold. He compared it to a primitive version of hyperlinks.

In minute 45 you were talking about the discovery of your parents' wisdom. You were expressing how it was difficult to convey your newly found appreciation for the advice of your parents when you were young, that you had to have your own children to realize they knew what they were talking about.I had that epiphany myself as a result of my own children. I just apologized to my parents for all the flak I gave them and told them that I now know, that they always knew the right move, and told them that it took me 20 years to learn the lesson. The one and ten references are/are also astrological (I don’t know much about Kabbalah so I can’t speak to that). Specifically, Saturn in the First House, which is often associated with vanity and defensiveness, and Saturn in the Tenth House, often associated with wisdom and constant struggle.

Saturn has multiple meanings. I adopted the meaning that he is talking about children(chose 1 or 10). As saturn was a paranoid god about his children. He would eat them.(Saturn spits you out like a child) So hang on to the grudge and possibly torment your children(ignorant to the damage done) or be humbled(let go of the cold and faded anchor). One detail about the grudge I found a while back is that when he says “Saturn acends” it refers to the middle finger in hand astrology. Maynard later talks about the meaning of Saturn being the symbol for “almighty god”

That Maynard scream and the drumming in the final part plus the groove in the middle are the best parts of any Tool song!!

I always thought the phrase "Hang on or be humbled again" was in reference to the grudge. Letting go of a grudge can be a humbling experience where, at the end, you have to acknowledge that you've made a mistake to still be angry. I figured that line was the logic behind being angry- that you can't calm down or you'll realize you shouldn't have been mad in the first place. In any case, another great song, and another great review!

That is the first time I've seen Vin mouth the lyrics beyond a line or two. He's into Tool. Cool. The regard of Saturn is not just the time it takes to rotate around the sun. Certainly, that is a serious factor, though there is also the premise that it represents duality. Saturn is, by some mythological studies, regarded as the basis for which Satan was situated from. Yes, 1st three letters are the same. Satan, as most Christians know, was formerly the highest ranking of the angels. Satan was, by the decree most know, the first representation of duality(highest ranking becomes the epitome of an adversary). The ascension of Saturn for the song meant both the "growth" factor that Vin stated & the rise of the "negative" that was beckoning to take over the world, per the short-sighted believers whom thought the world would end or be utter chaos beginning in the new millennium. The Scarlet letterman regard plays on both the one of whom was labelled & the one whom applied the label towards the other. For the one whom was labelled, they were unable to forgive the one whom applied the letter due to all the torment that they went through after having the letter placed on them. On the other hand, the one whom applied the letter was unable to forgive the other which resulted in the letter being applied to them. So, each of the two carry a grudge, at that point. Sori hit a serious nail on the head with the "clutch it like a cornerstone" explanation. The "leaden grudges into gold" breakdown works well from both POVs that you two stated towards such. You guys were really great on this breakdown of this track.
