What's really surprising is when you learn that the drummer only has 2 arms

Shades of cozen indigo refers to shedding false tears. Also followed by lemon juice up in your eye... producing tears that have no basis in emotion. The word cozen describes something deceptive and indigo is almost exclusively artificially manufactured in the modern age (its is no longer derived naturally). So many people don't understand how simple this lyric is. It is simply false tears, or a putting on a show with no substance behind it.

You know the reason your channel is becoming more and more popular is that there are so many people out there who love to talk about music and break it down the way you two do, but have no one close to them in their lives to discuss it with. I feel like when I watch your videos I'm in the middle of an awesome conversation about songs/bands I absolutely love. Good luck getting my wife or co-workers to have a constructive conversation about metal songs lol, which is why I think so many people resonate with the channel. Indigo is a colour that is often associated with spirituality. The Ajna Chakra's colour is Indigo, Indigo children, etc. It's also the colour the sky turns when the stars first come out, and so has been associated with star-watchers (shamans, etc) for along time now. This line is about people like Pat Robertson, L Ron Hubbard, televangelists, religious scammers, etc. who criticize all day long and get away with it because they hide behind the curtain of "religion".

Not only does Maynard have an incredible voice but he's truly a master lyricist.

The color Indigo is associated with enlightenment and spirituality, and "cozened" is a synonym for fake or phony, so I guess Maynard is talking about people (maybe leaders) who claim to be "enlightened" and give off a fake sense of sensibility...or pretend to empathize with the group of people they want to deceive... if that makes sense.

Maynard stated the song was in response to unreasonable sentences put on poc for possession of small amounts of marijuana. The system being rigged and broken.

I took my son to see Tool this past February on his 14th birthday in New Orleans. I'm 37 and I grew up with Tool. Now my son loves this music and it's so cool that they're still kicking ass after all this time and putting next level, deep, powerful lyrics out there that I am having such intelligent discussions with my kid about. We held hands during that concert and cried during Jambi. That "nasty" 😆 bass and those drums was a just spiritual experience like no other. It was an amazing amazing thing to see this dudes live...in NEW ORLEANS! #shityoself We love you guys!!! 🤘🤘🤘

At one time the color indigo signified a high monetary or power status... a social status. Cozen = trick or deceive, to obtain by deception. These two definitions fit with the rest of the lyrics about hypocrisy and all that... I just saw a few comments from earlier that sounded similar. So this hypothesis may be the closer fit. But then again, who knows how Maynard thinks?

The instruments are absolutely insane, and the lyrics are just as incredible....it's all a transcendental experience. ✌

You nailed the interpretation. It's about marijuana and the hypocrisy of others -- mostly politicians and the moral authority -- that point fingers at the "filthy pot smokers," when they themselves are just as dirty. Of course, like most Tool songs, it's packed full of double entendres, meanings and innuendo. "The Pot" is literally pot (marijuana), and the proverbial "pot that calls the kettle black."

"Now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo - got lemon juice up in your eye" I think is a jab at the Helen "won't somebody think of the children" Jovejoy type of people, who use religion (i.e. spirituality) as an excuse to stifle other peoples spirituality (in this case, drug use). So "the pot" is weeping shades of indigo shed without a reason, is moral authorities (religious types) doing immoral things (judging, jailing, scrutinizing, etc) in the name of morality."
