Listening to Tool - Third Eye Spotify playlist of music used on this channel: open.spotify.com/user/beatswo... All rights and music: Tool Original video: • Video
This song and Rosetta Stoned have always gone hand in hand for me. I truly think Rosetta is a direct response to this song. Third Eye expresses the teaching and healing aspects of psychedelics, while Rosetta Stoned seems to show that these drugs have other effects, especially when used irresponsibly. Maynard mentioned once in an interview that psychedelics are a great tool to jumpstart people on the right path, but for people not already making an effort to learn and to heal, the experience can be almost totally meaningless and absurd.
I just love how Carey can build up a beat in a way that it jsut roles over you... you get pushed by it, rolled around, fell the energy of the song in you chest and you loose your orientation, what makes you vulnerable for all the other aspects of tool.. Maynards voice, the heavy Riffs..... it all just rushes down on top of you and you get carried away, surrounded by the perfection that these musicians bring you. Frking love it everytime i hear it
Tool are heavily inspired by the works of Tim Leary, Carl Jung, Phil Hine, and Alaister Crowley, if you really want to go deep into Tool's lyrics, you need to check that stuff out. Aenima follows the early progression of a peyote trip, the angst, fear and anger that build up in your stomach, bad 'spirits' so to say, and the subsequent 'purging' giving way to the breakthrough in Third Eye; the 'welcome back' from his ego-journey that is conscious existence (and the pain therein). Laturalus is the 'plateau', climaxing with the title track, and 10'000 days is coming back to 'Earth'. I still haven't listened to Fear Inoculum properly (saving it for when I'm in the mind-space to hear something 'new'), but I wouldn't be surprised if it represent the 'integration' of the transcendental experience in mundane life.. "Think for your self, question authority.."
Shrouding all the ground around me Is a holy crow above me Black as holes within a memory And blue as our new second sun I stick my hand into his shadow And pick the pieces from the sand Which i attempt to reassemble To see just who i might have been I dont recognize the vessel But the eyes seem so familiar Like phosphorescent desert buttons Singing an old familar song Beautiful, truly beautiful imagery.
Above Björk and Motorpsycho, Tool and especially - especially - Aenima is _the_ Album for me. I remember listening to it, lying on the floor, eyes closed over and over and over again. It did hit the spot at the First listening. I am forever grateful to my guitarist and singer of that time in the 90s who recommended TOOL to me.
The movements in this song elevates it so much, it’s a symphonic journey. Which is what makes it one of my favorites. And the arrangement matches the subject matter perfectly.
That's one of my favorite Bill Hicks quotes. I was appreciating it before there was a Tool. It's nice they help spread that message to a new audience and generation. Peace...
"Think for yourself, Question Authority." Tool opened up many (if not all) of their shows from the Lateralus tour with a recording of Timothy Leary, and in the end, they put that quote there in a echo type loop. This song comes from Aenima, the album before Lateralus obviously, but being the last song on the album, it works as a perfect bridge between the more external and harsher sounds and themes of Aenima, to the more internal, matured sounds and themes off of Lateralus. You were spot on with your analysis in my opinion. Awesome review/reaction as always Jim! Also, between the RU-vid grind and a Baby...I feel you made a sound decision. by the by, if you find yourself wanting to do another song from Aenima, I made lyric videos for all the major songs from the album and put them together in a playlist. I would be absolutely honored to have one of my lyrics videos be a part of your reaction vid someday. :0) I'll leave a link below just in case you are interested. Either way I love your work and look forward to seeing more from you. ru-vid.com/group/PL85GmvDTY4K34Y9bNSJqX08ugzAyKF_hX
Jim i have watched your reations to Tool and i must say that it felt really genuine! Thanks for this and welcome to Tool Army brother! Keep going! SPIRAL OUT ! \m/
Congrats on your baby! Glad to see you back, as I think you bring a great, calmer type of reaction to fans. Enjoy time with your child, that is your focus now. :)
Love watching your reviews, been listening to Tool for the past 3 years and my only wish is that I’d been introduced to these guys sooner. Keep going at it brother!
You are always so spot on when describing Tools musical emotions. Your facial expressions while listening are also appropriate: perplexed yet satisfied!
I love your insight into the themes of the music Jim. Very little gets past you and even when it seems you may not agree with a concept, you still fully consider and explore the possibilities with an open mind. Your kid is lucky to have a cool dad like you!
So glad your back on Tool again Jim. There are so many 'Tool reaction' youtubers of lower quality, shall we say, that I love listening to your intelligent, educated, knowledgeable and interesting views and comments on Tool music. Keep spiralling!
Possibly the most symphonic Tool ever got with their writing. This could easily be mistaken for the prog-rock answer to Stravinsky. There are even echos of the Rite of Spring in this, especially those filthy augmented 4th chords around the 8:10 mark. Also known as, 'the devil's interval', historically.
Congrats on the bub. I look forward to seeing the reactions whenever you are able to do them. Certainly not my favourite tool song, but its you reacting so I had to watch😉.
"Today a man on acid discovered..." is also one of Bill Hicks' stand-up bits. RIP to one of the greats. I'm also with you on forgetting how great Tool is when I don't listen to them for a while. Its funny that all these reaction type channels on YT have got me listening to bands I love, yet for whatever reason haven't listened to in many years
I usually skip the Tool reactions, as I'm so familiar with them , and everyone does them. I'll make an exception for my buddy Jim, on my favorite reaction channel. Good seeing you Jim...and it's absolutely right of you to make the right ,and proper , priorities....
i understand what you mean we’re stripped of our true identity as self, pure consciousness, because we are surrounded by distractions and such that we identify with not realising who we truly are within. i am yechidah i am atman
i've watched quite a few music reaction videos (as have MANY people)... gotta say, your song assessments are the only ones that i ever get through, relate, and agree with.
Yea Danny won a drumming tournament a few years ago and was deemed the best drummer in the world with the drummer of dream theater in second if I remember correctly. He is truly amazing. I'm pretty proud of my drummer cause he can play almost every tool song ever. I don't know if Danny is still considered the best in the world but he's up there in the top five ever for sure.
Jim once again the most knowledgable reactor on youtube. I know alot of people react to Tool, but nowhere in depth as you do. You see them the same way i do, both musically and visually. Keep up the good work mate.
tool does a fantastic and almost unprecedented job of making your skin crawl. they kind of induce a sense of movement get right into it with good headphones. then all of a sudden your hair stands on end. love it.
I'm at 15:00 in. So...............did you like it? lol...total sarcasm. I love how into it you were. You seemed to relish and notice all the tiny subtle spine-tingling moments of musical creativity. PS: More Tool! It's a guilty pleasure for whatever reason for me to watch Tool reaction videos. And yours are probably the best. You just get the music more than most. Plus you seem to be a super genuine cool human being. Really enjoy what you do!
13:52 That wah Build into Total Carnage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No song sounded like this before OR after. Thi8s album was their Back in Black or Dark side of the moon .
What can you possibly say about this song, definitely in top 5 Tool songs, a true mastetpiece. No one even comes close to sounding like these guys. AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The first part of the song reminded me of Porcupine Tree's album called Voyage 34. It's right up your alley, Jim! Voyage 34 is quite a different story on Porcupine Tree's catalogue, but brilliant as well.
Jim, always interested to see your reactions as you seem to do some of the more overlooked bands & have a genuinely natural musical reaction to them. My only request would be Karnivool - New Day (the studio version). It is what the people want! As a personal additional request though I would also throw Monuments out there as they are a very under appreciated/represented band in the metal reaction scene here on RU-vid. Their guitarist is an absolute riff machine & they have quite a unique sound overall. Remember Jim it's quality not quantity! Sending good vibes from Cardiff bud!
@@JimNewstead Greatly appreciate the reply Jim! Forgot to recommend a track for Monuments so thought i'd hop back with a little direction/suggestion. My pick would be "Mirror Image" off of their 3rd & most recent record although many regard their preceding record to be somewhat of a prog metal modern classic, so it's definitely worth digging more into their material. I will warn you that there is some "unclean/scream" vocals if you're not totally into that sort of thing but their vocalist is incredibly unique within the genre not to mention very versatile.
I love your stuff. Listening almost exclusive to your Tool content though. Dunno what that says about myself ;) Can you react to Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Storm?
20:15 The fact that a relatively mainstream hard rock/metal band in the mid-late 90s was using that quote is pretty mind-blowing, but the fact that a stand-up comic was using that line in his act is even more remarkable.
Just found out about your channel :) and by the look of it, i think you most definitely should react to Anubis Gate. It's different, as far as i know it's not a well known band but really good, really high quality prog metal.
@@JimNewstead I just have to show you lol imgur.com/a/biS7Bre this is that great bit towards the end of the song. you both were SUPER into it. It was epic lol
Welcome back, Jim! Life comes first, mate Always Quick question: do you have a dedicated sound card installed? A headphone preamp, too? I have an excellent computer, and great headphones, but need to get better sound quality from my rig. I feel that the bottleneck might be with the sound card, for some reason.
Hey jim love your channel, since you are the only reactor that reacted to the flower kings yet and you enjoyed it, please react to the Track stardust we are. My favourite Song ever. Would be nice if you have the Time. (Studio Not live) thank you from switzerland
