Prison Sex, Invincible, Shism, Parabola, Bottom I'll always go back to Aenima the album. Any song on there is a masterpiece. Honestly if you asl me tomorrow I'd say a complete different 5 lol. I love Tool
Drums - AEnema Base - Wings for Martie PT 2 Guitar - Invincible Vocals - Prison Sex Band - Rosetta Stoned PS. You could make this list with any 5 Tool song and no one would be incorrect
Yeah I don’t get it. Vicarious, The Pot, Jambi, 10,000 Days, and Right in Two are all highlights in their discography imo. Also Intension is an incredibly beautiful song that is probably their most slept on deep cut.
Danny - Pneuma Justin - Aenima Adam - Third Eye Maynard - 10,000 Days Pt 2 Collective - Reflection and Descending... I just couldn't separate the two. Had to include them both somehow, and you could isolate any member on either track as a signature for this list; these are the two most perfect pieces of art in my lifetime.
i think danny said schism was his favorite off lateralus while first promoting album. lmao, "schism" is tool's version of melvins "divorced" (featuring, um, tool). lmao damn this girl on the right (voice of voiceless) be SCREAMING!
Justin I’d say 46&2 because when when he was asked to be in the band after Paul de’ Amour left one of the requirements was to have some songs of his own to work on when they were in process of making Aenema album and 46&2 was in his back pocket when he flew to LA to join the band and the rest is history
When you were listing how you would rank them and got to drums, 46 & 2 immediately came to mind. This will always be my favorite Tool song. Danny Carey plays drums as if he has six arms. Hooker With A Penis was a bold pick, lyric wise, but you make a great argument as to why it deserved to be on this list! I'm sitting here hoping that The Pot would be on your list, and it wins the overall category!
Maybe it's impossible to choose the best ones but it's possible to share your love for Tool, and you've done it well my friend. 🙌 Took me an hour but here is mine. Drums: The Grudge Bass: Schism Guitar: Third Eye Vocals: 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) All: 7empest
I feel like not enough people give 10,000 Days (Wings pt. 2) the attention it deserves. Oh, what are they gonna do when the lights go down? Without you to guide them all to Zion? What are they gonna do when the rivers overrun? Other than tremble incessantly? Gives me chills.
I became a Tool fan around the time 10000 days came out. I saw them for the first time in February this year! Then.... they extended their north America tour and I'm going to see them again in November!!!! Mind blowing!
I love this video! Thank you! Your enthusiasm for this legendary band is genuine. Your enthusiasm is life affirming, sir! It's even better that you are a musician yourself. You definitely cheered me up ;)
Lateralus for MayNard the barbarian because of his vocal fibanocci pattern and also navigating through that song was amazing. This song has it all the whole maynard vocal gambit. The crooning the powerful vocals the bone chilling clean vocal approach. Lateralus is what got me into the band and it’s still my favorite song from them just a masterpiece
bill hicks: "all i'm trying to do, folks, is rid the world of all these fevered fucking egos that are tainting our collective unconscious and making us pay a higher psychic price than we can ever fucking imagine"
You’re truly one of the BEST personalities I’ve seen/listened to on RU-vid! Your intelligence for music..No fuck that…that’s obvious! Your LOVE for music mixed with your intelligence and that unbelievable drive that only an artist can have, is awesome and a pleasure to enjoy on our side of the computer. Love your content, love your channel. Rock on🤘
I was late to Tool. As an Englishman travelling the USA, I found myself living in an aircraft hanger on a farm. To kill time I went to buy CDs and found 10,000 days.
@CoastPropertyBuyers I think it was actually Stinkfist, but from when MTV used to play music and I liked it but never gave it too much thought. 10 years later, I buy a Tool album after hearing "The Pot" on the radio. 👍
Oh man, you literally hit every single one of my faves in each category. Your list is PERFECT! And yes, go see Tool live if you haven't. It's not a concert or even an event, it's a religious experience. You won't regret it. (6x since '92...and counting).
Love this list! Your insightfulness and adjectives are inspiring. Brings me back to my days as a 17-year-old bass player in her boyfriend’s band and also a 37 year old woman that likes to revisit the best… but also…Lateralus.
I think this is a great list based on your criteria (id replace the pot with lateralus tho). There are so many good parts in their discography tho that I can see every single one of your choices easy to argue against! What a fantastic band
Great list. It makes me happy to see 10k days get so much love. That album will always have a special place for me. My personal top 5 would be: -Eulogy -Right in Two -Invincible -Reflection -46&2
3 of the songs you picked are in my top 5 - 46 & 2, Jambi and The Pot. I kept pausing when you said it was drums or guitar for the next song, etc. I didn't guess any right for the particular instrument, but I guessed correctly that 46 & 2 and The Pot would be in your list. This is such a difficult thing to consider. Because while I am listening to ANY tool song, I never think about listening to a different tune of theirs instead. Every song they've made is better than great to me (except for a couple of the weird interludes - that are only there to allow you to process the masterpiece you just heard and prepare you for the next). Stay awesome Mike!
Hell yeah! I love how Michael just shows his emotion when a tune hits him… Grinding his teeth, tention on his lips, jaws in a firm bite… and his fist waving in enthousiasm…. I have the same reactions and feel about similar portions of music like Michael… I’d love to grab a drink, (water, lemonade) with you Michael… we would have a lot to share and discuss… I hope you know what I mean… Anyway… cheers from the Netherlands!
Drums: Forty Six & 2, triad, ticks and leeches, reflection argh so hard... ill go forty six & 2 just cause i agree that its the best drum section i heard in any song ever Bass: Reflection. Its so simple but its so hypnotic and the tone is just lovely. shout out- Aenima the bassline is sick Guitar: Lateralus - the whole song is guitar heaven. Vocals sound: Pushit Lyrics: Wings for Marie/10000 days Whole song: Third eye. No one picks this song out but it is a masterpiece.
Congrats on 500k subscribers! My top 5 tool songs would probably be Opiate, 7empest, Forty-Six & Two, The Pot, and The Grudge. Sorry Undertow, you're the only album that didn't have a song make the cut, but I love you too!
Oofta! This is a loaded post! Expect paragraphs of comments from me when I get a chance lol. Tool is my all time favorite band and I think the greatest band ever. They transcend every other band exponentially in my opinion, because they’re so deep and they don’t produce a bad song. So you can’t have a wrong pick because there’s so many you could choose and they’re all great. I like the format of best from each member then overall I like that approach
Drums: Ticks and leeches or the Grudge Bass: The Pot, killer bass line Guitar: 7empest Vocals: The Grudge, love that scream Band: Descending, between the opening bass line, Maynard’s vocals, Danny’s drums and Adams outto solo, song is perfect from start to finish
love the list. some other considerations... Drums - the grudge Guitar - 7empest Bass - the pot Vocals - schism or rosetta stoned All - 7empest again lol
Flew down from Canada an finally caught dead and co for my first time at fenway on the 24th. Up there for the best night of my life. Hope you can go over a song or two from this tour .
One trick that actually helped me with "Jambi": After the intro, i start the pull-off riff (when the drum toms stop) with an upstroke, instead of downstroke picking.
Drums: The Grudge Bass: Schism Guitar: Stinkfist (i know odd choice) or Lateralus (if I can double up) Vocals: Right in Two Complete Song: Lateralus Honorable Mention: No Quarter
Danny Carey (Drums) - Hard but would have to go to The Grudge because of the end. Justin Chancellor (Bass) - Easily The Pot. So incredibly funky. Adam Jones (Guitar) - Easily Third Eye (Salival). Must be a nightmare to play live though. Maynard James Keenan (Vocals) - Very difficult but I think it might be 10,000 Days (Wings Pt 2). He puts so much emotion into his lyrics. And don't even get me started on the writing!
I LOVE Adam's guitar tone, particularly on the 10,000 Days album. If someone made me choose just one sound for rock/metal guitar, I'd have to point to that album!
Agreed 👍. Personally, I rate him highly, even though a lot of guitar purist’s wouldn’t. It’s usually just right, no over the top solo’s, rich & deep down tuned sound, just perfect. Adam’s a creative fella, had a Hollywood career before he was in the band, hat’s off 🎩. I can’t even fix the chain on my dirt bike, lolz.
hell yeah man... as you alluded, you could have swapped out every one of those songs you picked for something else, and you would have been right. By far the greatest metal/prog/alt. rock/whateveryouwannacallthem band of all time as far as I'm concerned. Please do some more Tool analysis! love watching people who know what they're talking about geek out on Tool as much as I do
PHEN-OM-ENAL TOP 5 my man 👊🏻 you’re sooo right how do you pick just 5 songs out of their catalogue of gems? Only slight changes for mine: Bass (The Pot) and overall song (Pneuma). Like most Tool-heads I will no doubt watch this vid over and over. What a buzzz!
I bought Opiate the day it came out in 1992 at a Hastings. Sweat, Hush, Part of me, Opiate are simply amazing for me. Then Swamp Song is simply incredible, then the whole Lateralus album. :) Ticks and Leeches is my Honorable Mention because it is amazing also! I seem to like their angry stuff!
Overall, this was pretty easy for me: Drums: The Grudge, simply for the break and fills that start at 3:42. Bass: Schism. Basic pick? Yes. Obvious pick? Also yes. Tell me a single bass student that you know of that hasn't tried to learn this tune. Guitar: Jambi, simple for the wild ass "pull-through" technique that Adam first used with this track. Vocals: Imma cheat and say Wings 1 & 2. Fight me. Overall: Lateralus. Again, obvious pick for sure, but there's a reason it's a signature song. Edit: I wrote this before your list started and happy to see we agree on Jambi. What a banger.
Adam I’m going to cheat and say Parabol/Parabola. Just masterful guitar work from the beautifully crafted clean tone the mega riffs all over that song with his signature distorted tone
Okay. This is a surprisingly difficult list to make. For me, I put 3 tracks from Lateralus because that album single handedly pulled me out of a deep suicidal depression, so it’s biased for sure: Drums - Rosetta Stoned (so many changes and dynamically diverse) Vocals - Pushit (Salival version) Guitar - Triad Bass - Schism Band - Parabol/Parabola
Great video. I'd choose The Pot for Justin, Lateralus as general Tool Song, Rosetta Stoned for Adam and Right in two or Reflection for the lyrics....but for the lyrics Is very hard ti make a pick
Genuinely surprised by most of these picks. For me, they’d be: Drums: Ticks and Leeches Guitar: Jambi Bass: The Pot/46&2 Vocals: The Pot/Vicarious Full Band: Schism
