Skullz reacts to Third Eye (Salival) by Tool for the first time
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

TRUE STORY. My daughter (now 22), when she was a baby, had moderate colic. She would be up all night screaming and crying. Nothing worked. Rocking in a chair, putting the TV on, bottles, binkies, nothing but time until she tired out and fell asleep. One night I was up at 2am with her screaming in the apartment, I was rocking her in the chair, and I said effit I'm just going to put some Tool on to drown this out. Third Eye was the first song on my playlist, and within moments she stopped crying. Her eyes widened for a few minutes, her ears perked, and she listened quietly. She fell asleep peacefully to this song that night, and every night afterwards. She's a Tool fan now of course, and have taken her and her sisters to 2 of their concerts since.

My daughter is 23 now, and a huge TOOL fan, but when she was about 3 years old, we would watch MTV 2, when MTV played actually music videos, when she heard Schism, she would stop what she was doing and watch it and sing along. We have seen Maynard twice this year, hopefully Puscifer again in October.

I was around 12 years old at lallapalooza when I first got to see them. He was painted all blue. It was in Cincinnati or somewhere close to there. I went to see Snoop and totally forgot that’s who I came to see once they got on stage. I can’t remember the year however it was mid 90s as well. That was Maynard as a Kabuki girl, by the time this was played, the wig was obviously ditched. The three times they toured for Ænima Maynard was a different character one time he was Reverend Maynard, like a TV evangelist. Another time he was the kabuki girl, don't recall the other at the moment Check out the New Year's Eve 1995/96 show man. At the Oakland Coliseum opening (double-headliner) for Primus' annual bash. The whole show is on RU-vid, sans makeup/costume, about 6mos before Ænima was released and is one of Justin's first shows with the band. TooL in their prime and I was there 🤙 At The Armory in Salem OR they opened with this song and had to pause because the pit broke down the barricade part way through the song and had to restart the show. It’s mesmerizing to watch Maynard. To me it’s like a physical manifestation of the way he feels the music. I believe the way he emotes to the music is the way he vocal can find a course and space through the music. That’s what makes him such a brilliant vocalist and lyricist is his way of emoting and find his space but sometimes I think for him it can be uncomfortable but vulnerable but he’s willing to traverse it to reach a higher state

Someone might’ve already pointed this out, but I believe this is the Salival audio over a very similar live visual performance. Either way, it was cool to watch and see you experience it. After you react to Jambi, there is a “non existent dvd” video on RU-vid you should check out. I’ll send you the link if you can’t find it. It’s the studio audio over a compilation of live footage. It will give you a better sense of the members and their more current live show setup.

Saw them on this tour and every one since. Their live shows have always been bordering on transcendent for me. The sheer physicality, power and mysticism in the early days. The spectacle and mythology now. If you’re looking for more live footage search for the glass house performance, Ozzfest 98, or some of the live undertow years.

Lol Yeah I remember seeing a quick snippet of an interview when they were touring for Undertow and an interviewer confronted him on criticisms about him being "too masculine." It's interesting that Leary tells us we MUST think for ourselves but because he was considered an authority in psychology we must then question that very notion before we implement it to begin with? Maybe that's the absolute pure message we're meant to receive. Complete unburdened consciousness.

I honestly think this would be too much for someone just starting their TOOL journey. Sure, you will probably find a few people close to the genre who are totally into this from the start, but for most this is just way too much happening. Sober is less complex (musically AND lyrically) and Maynard's performance is just good enough that you don't really know if he is acting or a wreck on stage if you don't know TOOL yet.

It’s more about the show and experience, the lights, the lasers, tv screens everywhere and huge backdrop with video that actually goes with the show. It’s absolutely amazing. My absolute favourite performance from Tool is Lateralus live 2014 (video on Tool Archive’s channel), the audio and video quality are insane and they also do an insane instrumental in the middle, please check that out!

Oooh....thx for the tip on that live version. Didn't know about that. Takes me back to college in 2002 when I'd scour the internet and burn countless CDs of rare live Tool stuff. It's SO much easier now lol...

no the performance is actually the exact one the salival recording is from, if you look closely, you can see danny playing the exact same notes in the video

16:20 never noticed before, Maynard puts up four fingers, signaling to Danny that he's only doing 4 "Prying Open My Third Eye" s at the end instead of 10 like on the album. (I wonder if he ever did 10 live?)

He did in the 96' Glasshouse video. But his voice cracked at the end and he was visibly upset about it.

Maynard started dressing up in ways like this, in body paint, etc when he had a son to help protect his identity.

Hey Skullz ! You were definitely onto it...again. (From Wikipedia) The anima and animus are described in Carl Jung's school of analytical psychology as part of his theory of the collective unconscious. Jung described the animus as the unconscious masculine side of a woman, and the anima as the unconscious FEMININE side of a man, each transcending the personal psyche. I presume the album title is a play on anima/ enema as is the title song's meaning.

Im sure it was already pointed out, but you know Im along for this ride and always happy to give my 2 cents. Maynard cross-dressed a lot during his Aenima era. I know that you know what Anima means. This makes perfect sense. Much of the Aenima album had to do with generational trauma and Jungian psychology that wasnt nearly as present in the earlier albums, but has stuck around like Alex Gray and songs about Maynard's mom ever since. Maynard is definitely familiar with integrating the shadow and is as aware of his Mother Wound as anybody since Roger Waters. I was thrilled, but not surprised, that you caught on most of this in your listen/reaction.

8:30 haha.....right on man. Your assessment is pretty spot on. The album Aenima comes from a play on the words Enema and Anima. Anima, in Jungian circles, is considered the implicit feminine nature of men. Animus is the masculine nature within the explicit feminine archetype. Think of the yin-yan symbol. You have the black side and the white side...the duality. But within each side is a circle that is the opposing color. Same general idea. Can't wait for you to get to 10,000 Days. Been on this journey with you since day one. Also...you really oughta go back and do their very very first album Opiate. It's an EP of sorts....just a handful of shorter songs. But they're quite good....and the title track is a classic Tool song to this day. Also....the hidden track on that is the bee's knees. Classic Tool humor while actually sounding quite cool. I actually hope you go ahead and do ALL the Salival tracks. Maybe do 2 each week instead of the usual 1? If nothing else you MUST do their cover of Led Zeppelin's No Quarter. To say they bettered that song would be an understatement. It's massive....so so good. So dynamic. Has a long dreamy passage in between the intensity. But then 10K Days will be a lot of fun. Vicarious, Jambi, the title track, and Right in Two are all insanely good. And Rosetta Stoned....is absolutely insane. I guarantee you'll pause it around the 5 second mark and be like WTF?!?!?!? o_O Thanks for the cool content! I've been a Tool fan since 1999 or so. My first ever live concert was seeing them in 2002 during their Lateralus tour. Changed my life. And it's so cool to relive all this through the eyes and ears of someone who deeply gets them....both conceptually and musically. And last but not least.....I like your music man! That line "What's he prescribing you? Lexepro? Xanax? It barely lets you function...but you can at least manage...." is now stuck in my head for all time lol. But I really like the new one....the Greta Thunberg track. You're clearly a talented musician with a good ear....and I think that explains why I like your Tool reactions so much. Damn.....that was a long comment. Didn't intend on that. Cheers!

If you're going to take another week or two before starting 10,000 Days there's a few more songs off this live album you should review like Part of Me. It's off the Opiate. It's a short song but it's great like every other Tool song. You Lied is another one and they cover No Quarter by Led Zeppelin all of Salival. Can't wait for you to cover the last two albums.

FYI you hit it on the nail he has said in interviews that on this tour he wore the bra as one way that he was trying to connect with the feminine side of his ego.. he said it's a very small way compared to the things that we have to do every single day ..but it was a token that he did.

I like this version more than the album version even though there’s only subtle differences. A big one is the final “prying opens”, I swear they cut it from 10 to like 4 and it honestly improves the pacing of the ending a lot Also I think this is the “Tooliest” Tool song ever 😀
