Oh, and tool tip for the tie rod tool...when you're done screw it back into the jaws, if you loose the tip, they're useless. And I've had the tip blow out like my shorts when old rusty finally popped and tie rod job turns into clean up the shop job.

So the trick to making this thing work on a 2008-2012 Accord: you need to grind the notch significantly larger. Like...don't stop until the inner "edge" is 3/16" thick. And you have to tap it in pretty aggressively to push the boot out of the way. The boot will weep grease because it gets compressed by the tool. And jack up the rotor a bit to flatten out the control arm...otherwise you have no chance.
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 5 лет назад
I've had the same kit for years. I did what you were thinking - took a grinder to make the notch just ever so slightly bigger. Works great!

That same ball joint tool works great for pressing back the copper sleeve on alternators that helps make them extremely difficult to reinstall unless it's hammered back or pressed back with that ball joint tool!

My bottom ball joints were stuck on my Silverado. Pickle forks and hammering to no avail. Don't have this kit (YET). Put my Powerbuilt control arm bushing press on it to just add tension and it popped right loose! This kit is in the mail right now. Thanks for another great vid Eric!
@jhitt79

I have a ball joint separator from Harbor Freight the part that goes on the ball joint stud is pretty thin so I thought it wouldn't hold up. Boy was I surprised. I've used it several times with great success.... well, there was that one time... I was cranking and cranking on the tool thinking, "any second now" and anyone that's used one knows that it can sound violent when it goes. Anyhoo, I was cranking on it and stopped to look, the tool was bending the ball joint stud on a Moog ball joint. I couldn't see it from my vantage point. That little $8 tool is surprisingly strong. (A new ball joint was then needed)

For some reason the majority of these types of ball joint separators are 22mm, where 28mm would be a much more useful opening. I had to grind my 22mm jaw opening a bit to work with Honda ball joints.

Harbor freight makes a version of that as well, which i've used with success on a few projects. I have heard that the bolts are prone to stripping if you don't lubricate them, so i keep mine greased. The HF one is less beefy than the OTC, so it might squeeze into some spots where that one won't fit. (and i'm sure it's easier to break, too)
@tylergenter9501
@tylergenter9501 5 лет назад
Yeah, the Harbor Freight one works great, except that every time I use it I'm afraid it's going to explode and hit me in the eye. I normally wrap it in a rag.
@stephenlutz123
@stephenlutz123 5 лет назад
I use the HF version with a ratchet and keep a nut on the stud. Tie rod on my Villager broke loose and sounded like .22 shot. No damage to the tool, though. I put some grease on the threads. Works fine for my very infrequent use (twice in 6 years). I have their Pitman arm puller, which has also worked fine.
@logmegadeth72
@logmegadeth72 5 лет назад
Same, I also have the HF version. It's still a bit of a tight fit on some knuckles, even though it's less beefy. I normally use mine to pop the lower ball joints out on Audi knuckles which are aluminum.

Honda has a stock tool very similar to what your using. Up here we have princess auto similar to your harbor freight they have one similar to the otc. I have used a chunk of hard wood with a mini sledge hammer. When that doesn't work I hang what ever scrap or good engine I have kicking around and with the hard wood hitting on the end of the grain it doesn't mark the spindle. I work alone so I had to get inventive. Great kit great video.

This one either didn't show up in my email, or it got deleted by accident. Guess I need to check your channel directly every couple of days! I have that same kit! The labels and instructions look different, but all that's included looks identical. I bought mine about 7 or 8 years ago ... maybe longer. All the tools in that kit work great! I used it for years on everything, before I realized alot of things can be removed with a 4 lb. sledge whack to the side. There's been times where I thought I'd break that one you were using there - I was hammering on it full bore with the 1/2" impact. Was having a bad day that day (what else is new? 😂) and was in "IDGAF mode" . Well thankfully the ball joint let go before the tool did! The pitman arm puller and tie-rod end tool also work fantastic. Priced pretty reasonably for that kit, too. I highly recommend this! 👍👍

For DIY use, check out the humble $200 Vpecker. It seems to have free updates for life and while I have some serious scan tools as well, I must say the wee vpecker sometimes does what my expensive ones dont. Anyhow, for the money you can't go wrong, it's not perfect but for that price with some biodirectional control, well that's a handy backup if nothing else.

If you are trying to safe that ball joint, then dont pull or push down from the control arm. As it can spreds the ball joint ball hole. That tool is must have on aluminium, but if its harder metal then you can use hammer to make it loss. But dont pull or push down the arm before that ball joint is lose, if you are trying to safe it....
