Friend, I have one of Bill's file guides. The carbides came off due to heat and dipping. I re-glued them on using T-88 epoxy after using my engraving machine to make a floral design to give them more of a rough gluing surface. They have been used on over 50 knives with no problem. Totally great product!
Been looking for a good file guide and it’s $125 I think and that’s really nice price for a carbide file guide. Most were 200$ about. The carbide is basically impossible to grind to file it’s about 92 hrc for carbide and files are much softer. That’s saying something. Thanks for the video I’m definitely buying one in the future ASAP
Jeremy, I have a dumb question, but it might not be stupid. Couldn't one use a pair of 1-2-3 blocks bolted together for a file guide? Not sure of the metal in a 1-2-3 block or if they ave already been hardened. Appreciate the information.
For the price I can not justify the expense right now. I currently use a section of hardened 52100 that works well for filing not sure on the grinder though I do not have mine built yet. Anyway I guess we shall see soon enough.. Cheers, Martin
Definitely would be an extremely benefical tool especially for those that are going to be making a lot of knives, etc... I checked the price on the Carbide ones and it would cost me about $150 including international shipping to the States. Definitely something I would consider after I get started and really know that I am going to be making more and more knives. Thanks for sharing Jeremy.
Awesome video! I absolutely love your channel. I’m just starting, and I’m learning so much from you. Did you get the steel or aluminum file guide from bill?
I just purchased the file guide and came back to this video to see what the pins were for and you mentioned jimping and I’m curious as to what the file you showed for forming the jimping was. If you see this post could you please tell me or if you have a video on the process would you please send me a link to the video. Thanks
Yeah. I think the pins on the file guide are to help keep both sides very precisely lined up. I did a video on the checkering file I use for jumping here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8DPyV0Bj6uU.html. Cheers👍
Witch carbide I'd be more concerned about tools that are touching it than about carbide itself. It's really hard to cut it even with thin cutting discs for angle grinder. Thanks for the video, I alwys wait for new one to come.
Yeah that's for sure! I always wondered why some people say that they are concerned about wrecking their guides when using these carbide ones. You're welcome and thank you for watching!
I bought that Behnke guide when you posted it on instagram. Very very well made, though I worry a little bit about the adhesive breaking if I over tighten the bolts. How tight have you torqued yours?
Right on👍I haven't measured it or anything, but I just tighten it until the blade feels good and secure. I'm surprised how little I feel I am tightening it and it hasn't ever some loose on my when I'm using it yet. I notice that with the pins in this one I have to tighten it far less than the one that I made without the pins. 👍
I enjoy your work. But I just have to say that you should give more details in your videos instead of saying "I don't know I'll put it in the description" even if it means you have to stop for a second to look it up. A video that has a lot of editing done to it is better than a video with a lot of I don't knows.
