Official Simple Little Life Video of: Tool Time Tuesday - Knife maker's PPE. The most important part of knife making (and what I should have started the TTT series off with, personal protective equipment. For real. THE most important part of knife making is not injuring yourself. Here's a few of my thoughts, and some gear I use to help keep me safe.

About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

A man after my own heart. Although I'm yet to make my first knife my PPE reflects yours almost exactly. Having spent years in the workshop, I came to realize PPE allows me to relax ie. breathe more easily using power tools not having to endure the noise, the dust and the sparks. As a result I can work slower, ultimately making a better product.

I love my father for introducing me from a young age to the shop, we've had lathes, mills, tables saws, everything you need to build anything you can dream of. It may take longer because it's a basic tool, not one of the neat new toys, but still, there wasn't anything we couldn't do between his and our neighbors shops. I hate that my father was not being more safety conscious when I was younger. He joked at my expense about me wearing a mask and a leather glove on the hand that was right on the grinder. I've had some breathing issues that I think stem from wood dust and maybe a bit of metal dust. It's gotten better since I've started wearing the respirator religiously, but I know it'll never be 100 percent again.

oh that kinda sucks. When I messed around in my dad's garage I don't ever remember any type PPE at all either. Glad you're taking precautions now. Cheers!

steel toe cap boots are also really good. yesterday, I was using my drill press and whole chuck fell out onto my foot and fortunately I had my steelies on. lucky me because I had only just put them on, could've ended badly!

It's tough making PPE interesting or exciting, but you did a pretty good job. I wish there was more focus on safety overall, both online and in the shops I frequent IRL. Your background as a safety officer gives me some hope that you really know what you're talking about :)

Great video man. On a side note, you mentioned spraying paint, though better than nothing, the pink 3m filter respirators are not intended for paint applications. That's where charcoal filters come into play.

THANK YOU! Every single maker needs to take PPE seriously. G10, woods, steel all is nasty stuff building up in your lungs, same with eyes. I was having the same reaction to dust with my eyes and now use dust dam eye pro like you showed. As well as a 3m half mask, I have a MSA full face respirator but after a few hours I'm dying to get out of it. One tip for those pink discs on the half masks, 3m makes a upgraded high flow replacement for the 2097s they're the 2297, you get so much more clean air flow and it's way easier to wear for longer periods, same p100/ov rating as the 2097s but are lighter, last longer and breathe easier. I got 2 sets off Amazon for 8.50, local home Depot cost for 2097s is 9.50 for 2 sets. I can't recommend enough. One thing I would add is a full face shield for using an angle grinder, I've heard of a few makers taking a fragment of wheel to the face and it will do some damage. Great videos as always. I hope every maker takes this seriously. I saw a guy on blade forum who had bone, steel and composite built up in his lungs so bad they cut him open thinking it was a tumor, that made me take PPE way more seriously

I very much enjoyed your vid this is about the 5th one I have seen so far. The only thing and I don't think it was an oversight. Material Handling. This topic is being handled with yours truly in my own garage/workshop. I am using lifts and cart lifts to lift and move heavy objects around. Eventually I will make an X,Y,Z motorized gantry for my shop. No slipped disks or other injuries. If you could please let me know the manufacturer and model number of both partial & full face mask, and those nice gloves. You have a new subscriber as well.

Great advice. While I was a teenager I was working in a place where I was recycling plastic bags in a bailing machine. The bales were bound together at the end with steel wire about 1/16" thick. The previous shift before me had stuffed the bailer quite full and I had to wrap the wires around. They were tighter than normal on this occasion and my company did not require safety glasses. I put the second wire on and when I was working on the third wire the second one snapped and the sharp end shot quickly upward and poked me in the outside corner of my eye. It would have blinded me it it was less than a quarter of an inch farther to the left. I insisted on going to the hospital immediately but I had to argue with management that I needed to go. From that day forward I always wore safety glasses, bringing my own from home since the company refused to supply them. It was a nerve racking experience at a young age. You can never be too careful.

Super informative I really love it. I have a couple questions though. 1. Are the generic filters enough or should I get a particulate filter? Or something else? 2. Almost no one wears a respirator when forging but I always have black stuff in my nose, and I use a propane forge. What do you think? It seems to me like the heating of metal and hammering it will cause metal particles to get in the air. You can definitely smell it. I just don't understand why no one wears a respirator when forging.

Jeremy please tell me what type of safety glasses you where. I need a prescription safety glass for knife making. My eyes are going blurry and I want something that covers the edges of my eyes too
@phl_knives
@phl_knives 6 лет назад
X1Falcon I wear the 3m dust dam glasses Jeremy was showing but for Rx they make ansi rated rx glasses as well as larger clear glasses that fit over prescription lenses. Hope that helps some. Also a full face shield or respirator will allow you to still wear your normal glasses. Actually if it's a simple prescription like a +1 or 2 glasses Walmart sells by me ansi rated basic rx glasses for like 5-10$

Are you saying that even with the full face respirator that your eyes will still irritated? Or was that with the glasses with foam liner?

I am a Safety Inspector with my full time position and believe PPE is important. What do you think about a leather apron? Seems like there could be some potential for kick back when sanding. I also think it is important to note the direction of the belt sander in relation to where you are standing. I am new to knife making and have limited experience. Thoughts?
@informationwarfare

Is there any particular type of general apprenticeship that would give skills that would translate into knife making?

I can you from personal experience that a scratched cornea is some of worst pain you feel. And I had to stay in the company area for 2 months. For an infantryman, that was 2 months of torture.

Shooting muffs are great for general protection. If it's a particularly noisy job I'm doing I'll even put the ear plugs in and the muffs over them. Or my earbuds for some music while I'm working inside the muffs.
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 7 лет назад
Thanks! Yeah, shooting muffs are good. I have a bunch of pairs of custom folded ear plugs (which are by far the most comfortable to wear all day long) but that was when good old Sanjel paid for them. I like the foam ones that go in your ear. But the muffs can have a higher dB protection rating. A lot of it is personal preference. Cheers!

shouldn't your PPE be your first line of defense in stead of your last line
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 7 лет назад
nope. what's better, putting a guard over a chop-saw blade so you it can't cut your hand, or just wearing gloves instead? The first line of defence is always designing and engineering safety into things. PPE is ONLY designed to compensate for the things that can't be designed to be safe. In the pyramid of safe work practice and safety in general, PPE is always the last line of defence.
