About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

I know this is very old but first in my how to recommendations. I'm glad too because you just saved me a ton of time! Straight to the point. I had no idea it was this simple 🤣.

Right on. I still use this every week and it’s going strong.

Likely that the developer solution is diluted sodium hydroxide. I used to make my own in a milk bottle. 1 level teaspoon of sodium hydroxide crystals (used for drain cleaner) and a pint of water. I used to make my own PCBs with a photoresist coat that needed the same UV exposure as you show. You can buy it in a spray can. Anyway you expose photoresist to UV like you did and then develop in sodium hydroxide soln. Then rinse thoroughly. This is going back 30 years ago but I'm sure the chemistry hasn't changed that much.

Man! Thank you so much for this video. I looked and looked forever to figure out how to do the actual stencil and never found anything except for paying someone on etsy to make them for me. Now I know how to di my own.

You can etch any metal that will conduct electricity (aluminum or what ever including stainless).You might want to cut your etching material down to a size you want to use. That saves material and also keeps your etching material small enough to use. As for logos etc... anything with a really fine line might not come out because of the light bypassing the ink on the plastic. Try it before you do it on your knife. AS for etching verses marking... I only use the etching when I am going to coat my blades with CeraKote... then I can see my maker mark under the coating. Cheers.

Those etch and mark basically the current. To etch use direct current DC, and mark uses alternating current AC

I use nail polish, a sharp nail, cotton bud, salt dissolved in vinegar, and a 9 volt battery with alligator clips, works well but you need a steady hand to get your mark to look nice.
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 8 лет назад
Nice. I never tried the vinegar part but it makes sense that it would help out the process. I tried the nail polish but didn't get the results I was looking for. It's funny how some people try something and it works awesome, and then next person tries something and can't get it sorted. That's awesome you're having good results with the less complicated process. Cheers!

Been watching your videos for a while, great work! Saw this one a few months back and while at a thrift store recently found a brand new Mark 440 stencil maker with all the supplies and knew what it was due to your videos. Military discount Mondays, $7.50!

Excellent video my friend. Truly one of the best I have seen on YT about etching knives. I have spent tons of time researching and practising this myself. I had to settle on the semi-home-brew method as I wasn't able to fork out the dollars to buy The Personalizer and stencil maker. I use a CB radio power supply, q-tips, and salt-water to etch. I did buy some professionally made stencils that are reusable. I get acceptible results, but NOT nearly as good as those you showed on the video. Thanks for showing this! Atb! ...Nathan
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 8 лет назад
Thanks Nathan! I tied ordering stencils but after waiting for several weeks for a few companies I emailed to get back to me, I finally decided I can't wait and better just sort it out myself. I bought the etcher sort of on a whim (I wanted one for a long time and when I was picking up my kiln at knifemaker.ca I saw it on the self and couldn't resist) but I also tired a few things and sort of got decent results. I'm really impressed with these two though and I'm quite happy with out they turn out. But the good news for you, if you EVER need some stencils done up, I've got you covered buddy! Cheers!

How many times do you reuse your stencils or do you? Also, watch out for moving your carbon brush past the edge of your stencil... hahaha... I've marked the edge of the stencil... If you make such a mistake, no problem, just sand it off. It comes off fairly easy and you can re-do your marking.

So you say start with a minute for the light but not why. What happens if you expose for 2 minutes? Can you show what happened in this case? is the 2 minutes for maybe a larger design maybe, Lets say a image on the face of the work piece that is 1" x 1"?

hey man, I know this video is over three years old, but I noticed that the zero in your stencil didn't appear to have any "bridges" and I've been trying puzzle out how the entire outside of the 0 can get cut out without the inside of the 0 (which you don't want cut out) getting removed as well. Whenever I make stencils I have to leave "bridges" so "islands" remain connected to the outside. Any clue how this works?

Do you use the etch or the mark setting? I have a personalizer but if I only use Mark, it wipes off.

Hey Jeremy.. Shout out to ya from Bowness.. I also watch your show all the time. I was wondering if I could interest you in leather knife sheaths? I'm an avid leather worker who knows how to make them. I watch your channel to learn how to make knives.. I guess what I'm saying is if you ever get an order for a leather knife sheath I can hook you up.. I'm good with barder/trading..lol
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 8 лет назад
Yeah for sure! That would be rad! I've had some requests for leather sheaths recently and I've been making more knives lately that are not well suited for a utilitarian kydex sheath. We should certainly hook up and see what we can come up with. I'll see if I can figure out how to send you a RU-vid msg. Cheers!
