Hey ya'll hope all is well. I know its not Tuesday but better late than never. In this video I show how I tool up a full piece. I discuss tools, stamps, and general leathercraft knowledge. I hope you enjoy.
Great! Thank you! I have a Tandy swivel knife that I can’t get sharp. It always drags and doesn’t make a good cut. Also you’ve mentioned quality of leather. Does that really help and make a huge difference? Do you use Hermann Oak for all your tooling?
Dive in. It's a ton of fun. Personally, I don't really tool on much below 4-5oz. However I do a bunch of finger carving on 2-3oz. I have a video on finger carving if you're interested.
I am just getting started in leather craft. I want to do floral and animal figure carving (men's wallets) can you give me a list of craft tool #'s or Barry King tools which I will need to do this style of tooling? Also interested in Sheridan style. Thank you.
one thing i don't see much of is tooling thinner leathers. 3-4 oz. It seems most people do demonstrations with 8/9 oz leather or higher. Probably better visually for burnishing when tooling. Do you do much in thinner leather or small detail artwork? or do you just stick with artwork that only comfortable fits your current tools
Tooling thinner leathers is definitely much more finicky for the main reason of leather warp and displacement. Because there is not as much mass to the leather as say a 5-9oz peice the stamp displaces the leather much more on thinner leather. However, I do plenty of finger carving on thinner leather and that might make a good video.
