This week we talk through the tools & spares we took on our trip through remote parts of Australia.
We also load up the Cruiser and take it over the weigh bridge to get a final number of where we are at.

Great video! 0:03 one thing I always have is fuel treatment like Dr ..... Cost a bit but dodgey fuel normally brings you unstruck 100klms down the road and can distroy your moter

Laser thermometer and a multimeter. Laser thermometer can be handy if you think a bearing is starting to wear or you smell something hot under the car, can just shine it around looking for a hot surface.

I might be a bit, umm...OCD about my tools so would most highly recommend a tool roll to put your spanners in and a set of plastic socket rails to keep those on in the pockets of the tool roll. It just keeps things more organized and easier to grab what you need when you need it. Importantly, the socket rails will give you an instant visual indicator if you've misplaced one. (oh, and always have at least 2 extra 10mm sockets for when it inevitably goes on a walkabout at the worst possible time!) Another item I find extremely useful is driver set; small box with a screwdriver handle that has a female end and just about every driver you could think of (torx, phillips, flat, hex, etc, and even 7/8/10mm nut drivers) in the box. Then you can ditch all the but the really big flat screw driver that we always use as a lever or chisel in real life anyway. ;-) Cheers from over here!

Hi Craig, great video. Thanks. I didn't see a Hack Saw and spare blades. Also, circlip pliers are useful, particularly if you need to remove a broken tap with nothing external left to grab hold of. I just inserted the Circlip pliers, applied the necessary force and unthreaded the tap thread from the water tank. Failing this, I was going to use a Hacksaw blade to cut through the broken tap.....

Cotter pins for the castle nuts. Also, suspension bushes and bolts, and a pair of shockies for a camper trailer.

Thanks Rod! If you are referring to a spare air filter, we have got the Donaldson air filter system which has quite a long service life so we didn't need one for our big trip as we had only just installed it. But we will need to get a spare one for in the future 😁

Useful information thanks. The weight adds up quickly. I used to take (literally) everything on every trip but now pack according to the place(s) I'm going to. This saves a lot of space and weight. When towing fully loaded, a target of less than or up to 90% of the GCM gives me peace of mind. 👍

I would try it with the trailer on the length of your hitch (on the car) can have a multiplier effect on the tow ball weight while lowering the load on the front axle the distance from your axle to the tow ball is a leaver

Hey Andy, 'But I might need that' Words to live by 😂 Once it makes it in the drawers, it rarely gets removed. Alot of the Kings gear is perfectly serviceable and it's hard to not give it a try for the price. I have had some issues with their LED strip lights. As for the drawers and canvas bags, they've done exactly what I needed. Cheers for watching Craig

This preparation brings such good care to your family and other people on the road. It gives plenty to consider for my setup at home in the U.S. When I get over to WA I will be hiring a caravan. I doubt it will be as well outfitted as the Robbo ! Thanks for the video .

Agreed ! WA is spectacular country. We're planning to drive & camp Perth to Broome along the coast, with some side trips along the way. Probably August through October 2025. Trying to avoid wet season up north and hoping that it won't be too cold to swim in early spring when closer to the Perth-Coral Coast section.

@@judyzimmerman4868 That will be an amazing trip! Yes it is a tricky one to time it with the wet season and also so it is still warm. We were on the Coral Coast late July and while it was a bit cold we were still able to swim so hopefully by Oct the weather would be even warmer 🤞🏼

The only thing that came to mind for your spares/tool kit is decent tie wire and gas tape/pipe sealant. Your pretty well prepared unlike old mate that didn't have a plug kit or know how to use it 😂

Hey Mate Wire, how could I not include wire. In it goes😁😁 but I do have some yellow plumbing tape. As for old mate, that was the third blow out of his trip. He was rolling with an old set of highway tires. 😟😟 Cheers for watching Craig

I was always taught that you snatch before you winch, starting with a gentle tug as quite often that is all you need in conjunction with the traction boards. If you are by yourself then of course winch is the only option.

Hey Mate, Good point. All to often people are too keen to do a massive snatch. The forces involved are huge, if something were to fail the consequences can be catastrophic. easy dose it is the key. Cheers Craig

Small tarp to lay on. Multimeter. fuses. Water hose, couplings and vandal tape handle. 15amp extension lead and 10amp-15amp converter. Fence wire and Crescent pliers

The only thing i thought of was windscreen wiper blades because i have watched nearly all of your videos and and seen how dirty your car can get. They are handy to have a spare set on a long adventure.

Great video Craig, have you weighed your camper trailer? Seen quite a few ads pop up on FB for van weighing with a few only charging $150. As for anything else you may need, might be worth getting a few 12mm John Guest plumbing fittings for your water lines. The elbows can definitely get damaged by stones and aren’t often well protected.

Haven't had the trailer professionally weighed yet but will get it done so we can better check the weight transfer on the axles. We have taken it over the weigh bridge before and are well under our weight allowance for the camper. Thanks for the suggestion I will definitely add some of those into my kit. Cheers mate!

Your TBW is 230 kg but due to leverage your weight transferred to your rear axle is actually approx 1-5 times that weight. So you should be adding approx 345 kg to your rear axle weight. That will take you close to your limit, just be careful. You blew my mind when I saw all the extras you take, well done.

Thanks Fleur! Ahhhh fellow Perthies! Nice! We use the weigh bridge at Tamala Park Tip, which is in Mindarie, so not sure if that is close to you? It is not a registered public weigh bridge which means they won't print you a ticket with your weights, you just get to look at the weight on the screen. Thanks for watching 🍻

@@RoaminintheRobbo Many thanks for the info re the weigh bridge . We are in Floreat and it could be handy if travelling north (as we are doing in a week to Sandy Cape ) to see how our weights are fully loaded . We have recently used a weigh bridge in Rous Head with staff available and a fee .

Hi Joanne, yeah that 400 odd kg's is all of our weights, plus anything we put on the roof rack, in the drawer system and the boot of the car. Except the fridge as that is permanently mounded in the back 😊

I’m not sure I get 400kgs luggage allowance on Singapore airlines coming from the uk to bring all that gear 😂 I think we’re covered by the rac hiring a 4x4 so thanks for the run down but we won’t be taking any of that stuff 😂 I’ve learnt what gvm means though (gross vehicle mass) as like you say there is limits to what you can weigh once your fully loaded……so even though it’s not a trip I’ve learnt something today so thanks mate 👍🏻 imagine the fuel saving if you didn’t have to take all that gear 😮

😂 yeah can't imagine you can buy that much extra luggage allowance, and if you could it would probably cost the same as what we could have saved in fuel 😬 Do you have those sorts of restrictions in terms of weight limits in the UK? @@RoaminintheRobbo yeah it wouldn’t be allowed it would have to got through as cargo 😂 what’s on the pallet sir well 2 Anderson plugs 300 spanner’s 150 screw drivers 6 spare wheels 140 rolls of tape 600 fuses 2 spades 3 chain saws ya never know if ya gunna need all this in the outback etc etc etc 😂😂😂😂😂 I’m not sure about if we have same here in uk about these gvm rules but I’m sure we have some sort of weight limits for caravans and what 4x4,s can carry…….I’m not a camping expert like your good self…I’m learning from you it’s not the other way round 😂 oh I was gunna ask you something…..you know our route I think Darwin to uluru then back via the meerenie loop back up to Darwin……..the 4x4 we will be driving does not have sat nav would this be a problem ? I have the latest hema map and I’m sure this route is pretty much sign posted so would I need a sat nav ? Looking forward to the new video of your 2024 travels 👍🏻

@oojedioo 😂😂 don't forget the maxtrax!! It is pretty well sign posted. You should find between the signs and your hema maps you should be ok. If you are able to use your phone and have google maps we found as long as we had coverage when we loaded the route in, it didn't matter if we lost signal it still keep up with the directions. Also again if you can use your phone here make sure you down load the off-line maps. That is also good to refer too.

@@RoaminintheRobbo I couldn’t think what they were called 😂 the plastic orange plates 😂 I have google maps but going to check about the off-line maps on it 👍🏻 I also have the hema map book and WikiCamps…..so sat nav no needed then….strange as the 4x4 hire company is the only company that doesn’t offer you sat nav in a new Toyota hilux…..not many cars come without sat nav these days. Hopefully we’re be ok…I was going to buy a hema sat nav but what am I gunna do with it after the trip 🤷🏻‍♂️ plus it’s another costly expense…but saying that can you recommend a store over there that sells these hema sat navs ? @oojedioo I'm not sure if Google maps has an off-line version, we just found as long as we had reception to load in our destination it kept that even when we lost reception, so not sure how that worked? Yeah seems very strange they don't offer sat navs to hire or that the car doesn't have one!? It would be a big expense to get a hema one for just one trip 🙁 we have 2 major camping stores here that are a nationwide chain called Anaconda and BCF. They both sell them and can have good specials from time to time as well, if you were definitely going to get one, it would be worth keeping an eye on them. It is free to become a "member" at both stores and that sometimes offers discounts as well. No worries mate always happy to help however we can 👍

We don't carry gas bottles in the car, we have a compartment on the camper in which we store them 😊

Should of restrained that battery and gas cylinder in your cab, in the case of a accident they are a volatile missile quite easily capable of ending someones life
