Dude....Dragon Ball..... DBZ..... Outlaw Star.... Ronin Warrior.... The Tenchi series'....Gundam Wing.... Rurouni Kenshin.... Zoids.... Yu Yu Hakusho.... I remember BOOKING it home from scchool to catch these shows man. They meant so much to me at that age, and still do really. Classic weekdays Toonami changed my life.
Mr. Vengeance like damn dude your list just took me fucking forever back lol....hmm i guess was somewhat awesome to be a kid... lol..toonami brought anime to life in America...wow this shit just takes me back... WOW IM LIKE SO IN AH!!! LOL what a time bruh.😁 and I also remember booking home...from the school bus... to watch these awesome classical Anime's!!!
Dude, when they did the midnight run of the music videos, I stayed up and recorded it on VHS then made a fucking mix tape with the tracks, haha my age is showing
One little problem: If they're not associated with adult swim, we'd have no choice but to watch anime dubs aimed at children. It wouldn't be too bad but if you were given the choice to choose the toned down version or the almost unedited version, I'm sure you'd want the near untouched version
You can’t imagine the incredible wonder I had for this show. Caught it on an afternoon as a kid. Then, never saw it again. I desperately looked for it and could never find it again.
A criminally underrated anime, one not without flaws, but hugely outweighed by its incredibly epic moments, powerful soundtrack, and deep themes of identity, freedom, talent, and lawlessness. Its almost my 20 year anniversary of watching this the first time, still one of my top rated anime of all eternity.
You should watch "Monster" it was like the complete opposite of this, but on the sci fi channel(not toonami) around the same time period... one of the most unknown but amazing animes of it's time.. It completely nailed the anticipation factor.
i just finished this anime. it sucks. big time. it started off strong then just dies out. the character designs are great but they arent very deep characters... anyways yea. like a 6/10 anime
@@robertrogers074 mainly that it left me wanting more. The writer Takehiko had a lot more material to put in, but apparently Toonami wouldn't sponsor past a third season, and so many plot threads were rushed to be closed suddenly. Kinda messes with the climax since we don't get much screen time with Hasanko (the main bad guy). Shimi and Hanmio got episodes and they were amazing, but the rest of the anten Seven were unceremoniously crammed into the final episodes. They and Hasanko deserved to be fleshed out a bit more. Edit: Suzuka and Hitoriga for example were supposed to have an episode or two of their own, discovering Suzukas past and why she hates pirates. But in the finale they just showed up and fought each other while reciting the plot points of their past. Could have been cooler, but I'm still happy with what we got.
That's back when they made quality shows and profit wasn't their #1 concern. They had the best promos, the best show line ups, the best commentary. Now these shows that have no quality concept at all get aired because they're cheaply made and easy bids.
I've been coming back to these old toonami promos nearly every day for the past few years. I associate so many good feelings with toonami and it may seem trivial to some but it's really a treat to relive some of the best days of your youth in 1-2 minute clips. The late 90s to 2004 were some great years!
@@x-ra3849 Toonami never made any shows. They just aired whatever they got from Japan. Cheaply made or not. Alot of good with a lot Of bad. Nostalgia has distorted your mind. It was a “throw whatever at the wall and see what sticks” effect. Profit was always the number one concern but you were a child and didn’t no any better
I just now finished watching Outlaw Star on streaming, and it's even better as an adult. A lot of really good themes at play in this show, and it's not terribly long.
I’m watching it for the first time I have no idea how I never knew it existed but episode 2 the monologue about boys turning to men and dreaming is one of the best quotes of all anime
0:45 this part that starts with the quick succession of shots followed by Melfina starting a countdown for blast off with that horn like sound blaring in the background is just so insanely epic and well composed, the level of skill behind this promo is just unreal to say the least!
This still gives me chills evertime I watch it. I'm so glad I was in middle and high school when Toonami came out and was in its prime. It's not just nostalgia speaking, this is the greatest television promo ever made.
My favorite time as an Anime fan was the late 90's through mid 2000's when everybody relied on message boards to discuss each episode right after they dropped on TV. Now everybody watches a show months/years before it even hits the states and most of the Anime forums from those days are long gone:( The glory days of Anime in the US. Yeah, there have been some good shows since then but back in the late 90's-2005ish, when the internet wasn't what it is now and streaming was no where near as good and we had to rely on getting our fix from whatever CN could license, and Anime was still a fresh experience.
Even after it's been over 10 years, this promo STILL gets me pumped to see an anime I haven't seen since it aired on Toonami. It STILL makes me go, "I wanna see that shit!" >:D
Holy shit... I just now realized the narrator was Optimus fucking Prime. I hate myself right now for not realizing that when I was a kid and this was my first anime.
i remember when i saw the first Transformers movie, i thinking 'he sounds vaguely familiar.' I few weeks later i watched an old toonami promo for my first anime: Gundam Wing. And the rest is history.
Gotta love the longer promo, Outlaw Star live it good and give Toonami viewers the best moments. It give me moments too. An adventures through all of outerspace and the journey within. #ThrowbackThursday
Ah, this is so nostalgic! I was a freshman in high school when "Outlaw Star" aired on Toonami. Every day after school, I'd always eagerly await the next exciting episode! I even recorded most of the episodes on VHS at that time. Although a lot was cut from the Toonami version, I still enjoyed watching it! One year later, I received the DVD boxed-set for Christmas. It was better than ever!
Man, I have goosebumps and this promo made my eyes water. I missed like half of this show but I am glad I did. When I do watch this show in its entirety and uncut, I'll get to relive old memories of Outlaw Star and then some. Lucky me.
"The tragedy of this world is that no one is happy, whether stuck in a time of pain or of joy. The tragedy of this world is that everyone is alone. For a life in the past cannot be shared with the present. Each person who gets stuck in time gets stuck alone." - Alan Lightman, Einstein's Dreams
Even when everybody I knew betrayed me and left me swinging in the wind, this show was there for me. It gave me hope when I was younger and its giving me hope now.
Agreed. Who would you cast if you could be the director? It would be hard for me to cast the kid due to age 'volatility' (it should be a real 11 year old and who knows who'd be cast since children grow rapidly?) but for Gene I'd cast someone like Chris Pratt (maybe Chris Pine). Pratt would be too busy with Marvel to do a movie but I feel it'd have to be a comical actor who plays the ladies' man but often gets in over his head in setting his priorities. Lucy Liu for Suzuka, and Olivia Thirlby for Melfina.
So many memories of running home from karate practice to catch this on thursdays and watch on my tiny TV. Would give anything to experience the magic for the first time again.
Re-watched the series on Hulu recently in glorious film-like HD, and caught the episodes I missed /because/ of karate practice, lol. Sure is a different experience 19 years later, but the battles are awesome as ever.
The announcer guy made me watch everything that came on Toonami. I blame, and thank 😊, him completely. I never watched another cartoon afterwards. 1997 was my 7 year old self's year.
The original anime like this on toonami is what I grewup on. I remember going to my grandma's out in the middle of the woods and watching old toonami late at night.
i jus downloaded all the episodes. god i forgot how awsome this show was! one of the best story plots out there, and just galactic and full of adult action!!!
Hot damn, i remember these promos, it's the whole reason why I got into Outlaw Star and some of the animes they had on there.. Dammit I miss old Toonami
Man when this was aired on tv back in the day before all this social media and internet garbage wooooheeee. Those were the days. Wanna close my eyes and go back to than if I could
