Hell no.. just a bunch of douchebags making terrible songs with terrible lyrics.. Screw that rockstar bullshit, rock musicians should be down to earth and reletable to their fans
I would like to argue. Of course I disagreed with like half the list but still. Motley Crue should definitely have a spot but I don't know exactly who, but they just don't seem right
Warrant is not ahead of RATT or Dokken. Heaven, Cherry Pie, Uncle Tom's Cabin and Down Boys does not trump Lynch years Dokken and 5 platinum albums and over 20 years of RATT n Roll.
Skid Row is a Sleaze Rock band like Guns and Roses (Sleaze Rock is a subgenre of Glam metal but it's not Glam 100%) but Cinderella Skit Riot and W.A.S.P also deserved to be here!!! I didn't know Winger at all!!! XD
I'm 16 and I listen to anything from Blues to Thrash, hell I even listen to Disco from time to time. Good to see people as young as me listening to this kind of music.
Most of them never went away. Def Leppard have been releasing quality output for ages, I don't think they have made a bad album since High and Dry came out. Unfortunately Rock music can be fatal to some of its participants, Quiet Riot lost their lead Guitarist Randy Rhodes to Ozzy Osbourne's solo project and he died on tour, Hanoi Rocks lost their drummer in a drunk driving accident involving Vince Neil, and cancer respects no one even if you're Eddie van Halen. LA might have been the driving force but there were British bands worthy of a mention in this space. Scarborough's finest Little Angels, Ten and Emerald Rain made this type of music too and are worth attention.
The 80s were great. The music actually meant something it wasn't just slapped together most of the time with autotune slapped on top so they suck ass live. Although Glam Metal and Hair Metal are the same exact thing so the video is wrong. Even if you google Hair Metal, Glam Metal comes up.
I'm not a big fan of them either because I think they were more hedonists than musicians. In fact, they're one of the prime reasons why hair metal is one of my least favorite genres of music. Although I do think they should be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame due to the impact they had, and I felt that if Bon Jovi (another band I don't like very much) and Def Leppard are going into the Hall Of Fame, so should the Crue.
@@jeffo9396 Still, Motley Crue during their heyday were hedonists first, musicians second. And also, just because a song is catchy doesn't automatically make it good.
@@iggydisalvo I'm 54..My parents took me to see Elvis Presley in concert at 10 yrs old in the 3rd row!! Greatest concert I've ever seen myself besides Elvis was DIO!! RJD GREATEST VOICE IN ROCK!!
Funny story about great white... My dad won free tickets to see "blues brothers" at a local casino. Neither of us are super into the blues bros, but hey, free show, we weren't going to pass that up... We got there early to eat at the casino bar. Someone asked us why we were there, we told them we were here to see the show. They said "which one? Blues bros or Great white?" It turns out great white was playing the bar that night at the same time as the blues bros show... it was an way decision, and we stayed for great white, they played for about 2 hours to a small crowded bar, my dad and I sitting about 10ft from the band... Amazing show
They weren't really hair metal tho, as by the time they went to their second album they went to a more thrash/groove oreinted metal, where as posion is glamier than a mechanical animal.
Tyler Quantrill Yes, Skid Row were better band, but in Hair or Glam metal were Poison bigger band. Skid Row were Hair metal a little bit. They were pure hard rock band.
what do u mean twisted sister reference? I've never heard that before...is there a video with them saying that or? id love to see it aha send me the link
+Kyle Douthit open.spotify.com/user/ozzyfan88/playlist/6lehhbWLw63SfKXGRq27oV This is my Spotify Playlist um it's not completed yet it has my favs like motley crue Ozzy little bit of Metallica Motörhead triumph Van halen. If there's any song or bands you thing I missed just reply to me naming them
The thing people overlook is that these guys were all tremendous musicians. If you look beyond their appearance and really listen to the music, you'll discover that most of it is really hard to play.
I don't know about Twisted Sister...they had more punk influence than metal. It was Lemmy who discovered and helped elevate them, as they opened for Motorhead. But absolutely most hair metal is about unbelievable virtuoso technical musicianship, and well written vocal and guitar harmonies. Shred is their middle name. Eddie Van Halen, Warren De Martini, George Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jake E Lee, Rhandy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde, Paul Gilbert, Satriani, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Chris Poland, Kirk Hammett, ....
Glad you have featured Dokken, easily the most underrated from that era though I maintain that Cinderella should be in the Top 10 more than a couple of others that were put in. If you want a great Dokken track, try The Hunter. Such a catchy song that has a cracking guitar solo.
@@ZLuv2Bowl motley crue was first on this list because of partying and hair, its not based off talent. if it was then guns n' roses, def leppard and bon jovi would be the top 3 (in no particular order, but they're the best from the decade and crue would be at 4). this is based off just hair and partying pretty much.
I am forever hopelessly stuck in the '80s. A time when music was actually GOOD; and the musicians were actually TALENTED. A good point of reference: If the song contains a GUITAR SOLO, then its probably worth listening to...
+LiveforChrist999 Alice Cooper, Kiss, Aerosmith,Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Blue Oyster Cult, Ted Nugent, Warren Zevon, Lynaryd Skynyrd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, David Bowie, ELO, Steve Miller Band, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Boston, ect you need study up more on classic rock your missing out on a ton of classics. Btw I'm aware some of those bands formed in the 60's but their main succses was 70's. On an unrelated not I like the macho man pic but I don't understand living for Christ, is it like supposed to be ironic? If not I also suggest some self exploration and don't just bases your whole existence around a 2000 year old story book
I agree with the number one pick, as far as the 80s go. Motley Crue epitomized the essence of excess. The heart of this band has always been Nikki Sixx. He's the one with the most to say. He's articulate and a human being. Motley Crue's albums have been a journey. The last show I was at was here, in St. Louis. I can't remember the year, I think it was right after they released Saints of Los Angeles. Anyway, it was at the Amphitheater. It was hot, humid and horrible. My beer was warm after the first act. They came out and performed. Suddenly, the temperature didn't matter. It was Motley Crue. They were the first band I ever saw live. They were the last band that I ever saw, live.
@@Pllm30 I am just seeing this. Warrant actuality did a meet and greet at a local record store and my cousin and I went down there. They were signing autographs and taking pictures with all of the Fan’s. I met a few other bands bc my uncle was the vice president of the Hyatt Regency hotel here and they were always staying there.
@@Pllm30 He is very hot!!! I think he has social media pages most of them do. A lot of the band’s are on tour still. See if he has twitter and facebook or instagram
For once I actually agree with all the names on this list. I do feel, however, that Bon Jovi should at least be at #2. I mean, have you ever met a person who doesn't know every word of Livin' on a Prayer?
Braedyn Kidd That song is more of a vocal song and it lacks that guitar vibe, bite and style that bands like Crue, Ratt and Dokken were soo noticed for
I was waiting for Mötley Crüe!! I knew it would be #1 fuck yea!!! I love Mötley Crüe I saw them in Toronto August 26th! I hated to see them go. I wish they could still be playing!
At least you got to see them live once. I'm currently a teenager, and neither of my parents are into this music, so I had to discover them for myself, and by the time I had discovered them, the final tour UK tickets were all sold out :(
+Lucy O'Donoghue how old are you because I'm 14 and idk if they went to the UK or not. I bought a poster and shirt, the shirt had the dates and when they were playing and I don't remember seeing dates outside of America and Canada
+Mitchell Morgan I'm 13 and was this on the final tour? Because I think they did a world tour for that, so they probably wouldn't have been able to get all the dates on :)
Kerri Beaton yep, the whole album was meant to be called uncle toms cabin until label management told Jani they needed a “love in an elevator” style hit single so he wrote cherry pie and simultaneously made and ruined his career. It’s no secret jani hated that song and hated that was what he was going to be remembered by which I’m sure added to his depression. They were so much better than cherry pie
Sexton Hardcastle Totally agree, they really were better. And Jani had one of the best voices of that era. If producers, execs, etc, allowed them their own artistic direction/freedom, they could've possibly stood the test of time like a few other bands have... Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, GnR: all labelled as 80's hair bands back then & each very different. All had longevity after the 80s, leaving the "hair band" image behind and were simply labeled rock/hard rock. Jani could obviously write great ROCK songs, there's *no question* he could sing... And, following his own writing/artistic instincts, could've catapulted them out of the trappings of mullets & makeup...Into the life & legacy I believe he & Warrant deserved. He's definitely missed.😢 Btw, nothing against 80's bands! I love them!
Kerri Beaton 100% 🙏 just listen to mr rainmaker, uncle tons cabin, down boys, the bitter pill etc all great hard rock songs. Would’ve loved to have seen how their career went if they didn’t release cherry pie as a single, I honestly think they could have stood the test of time going into the 90s if jani was given creative permission to write what he wanted. One of the best 80s rock bands from an era that produced some great bands that il always love
Sexton Hardcastle as soon as I saw Mr. Rainmaker I started singing it, lol. You said exactly what crossed my mind ~ what could’ve been if they’d been allowed the freedom of their artistic vision, their path as a band, as opposed to being ordered to create fluff (sorry) like Cherry Pie. It’s a fun song, yes, but it’s filler music. Not a GREAT single when you have gems that you listed! Jani also wrote beautiful ballads. But, Uncle Tom’s Cabin was obviously the direction they wanted to pursue~ a darker, grittier song with substance & a helluva story! The video is fantastic ~ suspense, intrigue, crime. Cherry Pie’s video?! Bobbie Brown on roller skates in shorts getting sprayed with a hose...🙄 The whole band drooling over her. Unoriginal, boring and she’d been in a dozen videos for other bands in similar “roles” already. It’s sad... a great band held back & we never got to see their full potential.😕
I wouldn't really consider them a hair band but they did start out as a glam band so I think they would be considered hair band in the early years, especially before they got signed. Axl even had the big hair and makeup in Welcome to the Jungle
mascottie well the members of GnR got their starts in glam bands, which is why I think they still had the look, but their music was something completely different than anything you hear from an actual glam/hair band.
mascottie True but even though their "look" was glam their sound was more akin to 70's Hard Rock. Take Def Leppard they didn't really look all that glammy but by Hysteria they pretty much had the Glam sound down to the t. In this case it's the complete opposite of GN'R
Skid Row very quickly turned into heavy/thrash metal after their first album, which was semi-heavy metal. So I wouldn't really fully classify Skid Row as hair metal. They weren't even that glammy
They did say in the beginning of the video that they would be concentrating mostly on hair metal bands, rather than glam metal. W.A.S.P. are primarily glam metal, and they're also probably my favorite out of the bunch.
Daniel Lehman Kix, Don't Close Your Eyes, Faster Pussycat, Boston, Journey, Tesla, Cinderella, Steelheart, Guns and Roses, Faith No More, stryper, Slaughter, white lion When the children Cry, Skid Row, Tom Petty, Winger, Nelson, Ugly Kid Joe, Red Hot Chili Pepper, Nirvana, Nxcess, Vincent, and the list goes on and on and on...etc etc.
Man Kix! I mean for my taste they only had one strong album but Jesus what an album! Every song kicks some serious ass and their whole attitude/look is so Hair Metal sleazy! Love those guys.
From the ages of 19 years thru 29 years. That was some of the best music and times. I may been not been in my teens. But, I worked with high school students who were always asking me the same questions. Hey Walter, Have you heard/bought the new album from this band? I still have the albums today. Pure Memories. Good Memories
Although I regard "Once bitten, twice shy" as the greatest song of the era, I don't think Great White followed it up strongly enough, i.e., no other serious hits or longstanding popularity.
Wasp had a somewhat heavier edge and look. They couldn't be considered pop-metal, being that their look and musical style put them, pretty much anyway, in the Heavy Metal category.
Just like Deff Leppard those two were the more friendly versions of hair metal with Bon Jovi slightly more than Def Leppard but those two bands were mostly beloved by women.
Def Leppard and Bon Jovi both deserve to be at least 1 or 2. Cinderella deserves a spot on the top 10 as well. But wheres Scorpions? I know this is before my time but I still enjoy hair metal. I honestly was surprised Bon Jovi wasn't number one, that is what I was expecting.
They omitted KISS and Van Halen as they predate the "hair band" movement. Scorps were likely omitted for the same reason, as they were founded even longer ago than either of those bands.
@@TaylorTCarlson Def Leppard also predated the hair band era. Bringin... was a 70's song! Van Halen is pretty much the same time period as Def Leppard. 70's - 90's.
Def Leppard should be #1. They've sold 100 million albums and are also one of only six rock bands to have two diamond certified albums. The other five are Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Eagles, Van Halen and Pink Floyd.
@@Fisgono Hair bands were high vocals and flashy guitar licks, but kind of cheezy girly lyrics,....GNR and Scorpions may not have as flashy guitar but the musical content is almost that of Priest and Maiden,..they are not hair band,...although GNR had the hair on the back of the first album......although I think George Lynch is an awesome guitar player, and Dokken was hair band, some bands would almost consider it an insult to throw them in the hair band category
I love Mötley so much. Sadly, they're not gonna be performing again after their tour is done. But hopefully they'll get inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame soon. Then that will make my day.
Me too! The first real world reality show was the end of MTV as music television. Imo real world was the beginning of the end for good tv in general because that started reality tv bullshit. YES MTv is responsible for the kardashian nightmare
OK, about the end of the intro...Van Halen is too "associated with 70's glam metal" to be on this list?? WHAT? Van Halen was arguably the biggest rock band in the world for the first half of the 80's, everyone with at least simple knowledge of rock history knows that.
van halen. totally different vibe. its not exactly hair metal etc. its just hair and good ol hard rock. compare albums like 1986 Night Songs by cinderella to 1986 5150 by van halen. compare motleys 1989 dr feel good to vans 1988 OU812. the only album that i can see having a similar glam metal vibe is the first album. but that was the late 70s. van halen is pretty fukn cool. mojo is catering to specific ideas anyways

agreed! deff leppand bon ovi were not true hair/glam thats why poison wa ahead of them and gnt isnt glam Crue invented glam Cinderala skid row tesl should have been on here!
I don’t think it’s so much of who had more hits, but rather how the band’s “image” came off. And I have to agree Poison had the better hair-glam image. But sure, DL and BJ had more hits.
