While Tai Lung did set Po on his journey to being the Dragon Warrior, he really didn't feel as threatening as Lord Shen. Shen's battles were way more serious than the ones with Tai Lung. He actually killed a kung-fu master and ALMOST killed Po, something Tai Lung wasn't able to do! They really goofed with this pick :L

Ursula Weber Tai-Lung only wanted the dragon scroll that was blank which is why he fought Po Shen had a much bigger reason (I don’t remember but Tai-Lung’s reason was more dull then Shen’s)

I wasn't expecting to see Mewtwo either but I think he was a good choice. To this day, twenty years after Mewtwo Strikes Back's release, Mewtwo's still one of the most developed characters in the long history of Pokemon. His motivation is understandable (Giovanni's a psychopath who only wanted him for his power and Mewtwo, despite his adult voice, was basically an exceptional but inexperienced child who only knew violence, abuse and restraint - that's clearly what the armour was for - because his "father figure" wouldn't allow him to experience the joys life has to offer), his past is tragic (in the prequel he befriended the clone of a girl who died during the cloning process and on top of that, her dad erased his memory so he couldn't even remember the happiness he felt when he was with her) and he learns and grows throughout the movie to the point where he becomes downright altruistic in the sequel, Mewtwo Returns.

byte.me it's not brought up that much. In fact, early on, Disney did not want their name anywhere near the film, and were concerned about it being a flop. It was marketed under "Touchstone Films", which usually deals with live action films, and deals with films, live action or animated, that don't mesh with Disney's "Family-Friendly" image. In other words, the grittier, adult films ( Initially PG, then later pg-13 and R-rated action, Comedy, etc. ). For example, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", "Con Air", and the "gone in 60 seconds" remake They figured if The nightmare before christmas flopped, they could wash their hands of the film, and of Touchstone itself, after all, they also had Hollywood Pictures.

Tai Lung had his charms, but Shen is more menacing and has ties to Poe's backstory serving as motivation for the final fight. Tai Lung DID make Poe become the Dragon Warrior, but the fight was strictly business between the two. The only thing that ties Po and Lung together is that Poe is the Dragon Warrior but Lung felt it was his destiny.

+R.w T. Miyazaki (and most Ghibli directors) are really good about ambiguous antagonists. Yubaba and Lady Eboshi were both kind of jerks, but they created jobs and cared for their workers. Kushana (from Nausicaa) was ruthless, but stopped at nothing to bring glory to her homeland. The only really villain-like character (I know of) from Ghibli is Col. Muska from Castle in the Sky, though he's kind of a paper villain to my mind, as he doesn't get much characterization.

Jigglypuff Puffson Bullshit. Tai Lung had little to no character development or focus compared to Shen. And for someone who wasn't so devoted to martial arts, Shen still defeated two of the most reputable martial arts masters using purely martial arts.

Shen isn't in this? Those hacks. Shen is the best villain in the trilogy. Tai Lung has some character development, and a relationship with Shifu, but he came across as a dumb brute in the end and he got a cartoonish beating. Kai is kind of...meh. He is a super powerful warrior on par with Oogway and he wanted to use chi for war rather than knowledge because he's kind of a dick. Shen is a megalomaniacal genocidal PEACOCK, and he is more intimidating than both of them (a freaking leopard and an...ox?), he is directly responsible for the way Po has lived his life and the one who inadvertedly led him on his path to becoming the Dragon Warrior. No Shen=no Kung Fu Panda movies. He is also a tragic villain, seeking only the approval of his parents by commiting regrettable acts only to be punished and exiled, destroying his family forever. He also brought ruin upon himself and his death was a respectable one unlike the other two.

She Shen was the best one who as you said is a tragic villain who when banished wanted to prove himself worthy. but since he knew he wouldn't do that he decided to destroy china, and the pandas instead. I will give props to Kai tho. he was the closest one to killing po. If the others didn't help him at before he was covered in jade po would've been a goner. Yet he beat Shen by himself. Kai had power, Shen made KFP happen, and Tai Lung was there for po to fight a major villain to prove himself as the dragon warrior.

Antoinette Mercora I'd argue that Tai Lung wasn't even really a villain? If you notice, even as he went through the Valley of Peace in both cases, he never killed anyone. He was solely fixated on what he believed was his. Frankly Tai Lung can be argued to be as much a victim of it all. Everything he did in his life, learning martial arts and pushing himself to the pinnacle, was to make Shifu, who was essentially his father, proud. And then to see said father not even raise a finger to defend you despite all the hard work you've put in, all that you've done, and just meekly say more or less "yes master, you are right, my son isn't fit" would be extremely demoralizing and jarring.
