Another tip for starting writers is: Don't spend too much time on first drafts (zero drafts). it's the draft that is supposed to give the basics of the story. Zero drafts suck and are bad, no matter how many years you've already been writing. Zero drafts always need to be written again. with that, I recommend waiting at least a year to let the story be before rewriting it. Deleting everything and starting over with the idea of the story. This doesn't mean that it has to be the same. for example my story Nightwalkers started out as a future America really high tech world, now it's a more England dystopian basic world. Don't focus too much on zero drafts, use it as a stakeholding document where we put everything you already know about the story, characters and world. For everyone good luck with your projects!

I have a story that my 13 year old self left for me in one sketchbook and I recently watched your worldbuilding video to help with the world I’m making! I’m guilty of not plotting correctly and I’ve fallen into many bad habits because of my lack of writing experience, but your video definitely helped me💕💕💕 The story I have is called Sweet Dreams and it’s a dark fantasy! Thanks for the awesome video again!!💕💕💕

Was stalking your channel from the "how to plot a book" video and now I'm early😹 thank you for that, as a beginner I really needed to take a step back, slow down from the brain storming and temper my enthusiasm for my story. Now I am more aware of what happens in the story and can go on with writing without getting stuck asking "what do I do now🧍"

My problem is that I get super fixated on an idea and can't write anything else, even if I want to 😭 the idea I have now is too big and complicated for me to start with, but I just can't bring myself to write any other book.

I have the same problem, but maybe try to start writing for fun as well as for productivity. For example, do a writing challenge, try to come up with a short story surrounding a specific theme, character arc, moral, etc. Or just write a scene ( even if it's horribly underplanned!) from your main story, and just see where it goes. It can help you generate ideas AND practise writing simultaneously. I hope that helps :)

Omfg SAME, I'm exactly in your same place T-T I have a huge story I want to write since when I was a kid, which of course has evolved constantly in my head over time so now I'm basically plotting it all over again, BUT I stopped writing altogether when I got out of high school (for reasons) and basically all the talent and fresh practice I had accumulated went to shit Now some years later I can't start writing again because my big project feels overwhelming and out of my league, and at the same time I can't practice with anything else to try and get the craft back because whatever I try to do I only have my main characters and world in mind...so whatever I do I just feel stupid It's an inescapable circle and I hate it :)))

I'm the same! I've had the same idea 3 years. I've been planning so much, haven't really started writing because I still don't understand my characters. Every time I try to make a change to my protagonist I doubt that decision, then I'm in a loop of indecision. My story is starting to feel to big too. When I try to focus on another story, this one keeps pulling me back.

Im a beginner author and i started out on Tiktok, writing Imagine stories. I find that to be a REALLY good starting point, especially if youre like me, and the hardest part of writing a story is the beginning. In Imagines, you literally start with “ youre married to a cold milionaire” and you can go literally ANYWHERE from thay. :)

I have a story that I have been planning for 3 years. I haven't started writing much yet. I still don't understand my characters, I'm trying to though but it hasn't been easy. I'm still unsure what my protagonist wants. I realized that through my planning that maybe my actual writing project might be to big to start out with (a fantasy story with a protagonist that becomes a vigilante or a knight). I feel like it's been more plot than character driven. Lol, haven't even started writing and I'm burning out 😅. This kind of stresses me out. I've had this idea of writing an isekai (portal fantasy) story for a while, it is possibly shorter than the other story, not sure if I should move to that. This video was so helpful.

this helped A LOT. I'm a new writer, just started writing recently. I found your channel a couple weeks ago and have taken a lot of advice from your videos. I had kind of a big project that I wanted to work on; the characters, plot, etc. I had most of it all planned out already. the problem is, when I did start writing, It was sort of harder than I thought it'd be. Especially imagery. I couldn't understand what to do, how should I get better, should I just quit? I think I'll pause this project for a bit and start writing novellas first like you suggested, and I hope once I get better at it, I can work on the big project I planned again.

i’m working on a book myself right now and your channel has helped me out tremendously! it’s called “the lies he told” (for now, i may change it) and it’s a dystopian sci fi that takes place in a kingdom called withil and follows six main characters- the general of withil’s military, the queen of withil, the prince of withil, and three characters from a mystical village secluded from the world called the haven- the leader of the haven, the general of the haven’s militia, and the younger sister of a missing girl that is presumed to be dead. it’s got a romantic side plot between the general of withil’s military, the queen, and the prince (not incest) and it’s queer friendly (the general of both the haven and withil are women). there’s magic and mystical creatures, lots of lore behind the magic too, and thriller elements throughout the first third of the book. it’s got a lot of beats from my favorite fictional media, like one of the main character’s magic being based off of tomura shigiraki from mha, and some worldbuilding based off of attack on titan. i’m really excited to start writing it- i’m still plotting and making sure it’s cohesive because i have so many ideas for the plot.

Yeah at school I always did cheating in tests, but not if it was for writingor talking about something. Always had a 9+ and they where encouraging me for doing something a out it. Now I'm ~80 pages far I can see that it follows the tips from the video. Not just 1 theme, not only 1st person etc etc. Like you said; the hardest part is to not giving your work away to fast:) (Don't worry I'm writhing in mothers tongue, my English kinda stinks)

Guilty of not plotting here! For my first novel I ever wrote, which was in fifth grade and super cringe, I just got an idea and started writing, no plot, nothing. Throughout the book I ended up having to infodump to fix plot holes and the story started out good, but progressively got more and more messy. Now, I have a fairly easy plotting routine. First I’ll write a single sentence about my book, then make characters and create the setting. I use Talers and Milanote to plot. After that, I’ll make an outline, which for me is basically a summary of the book, including important scenes I want to write. Then, I start on my first of three drafts, where I just try out a few plot points. Draft two is when I finalize my plot, and draft three is the final draft. This process has helped me a LOT planning my two current projects, project shattered crown and project intangible!

I’ve only really been writing seriously for about a year. It’s become a hobby I genuinely enjoy, but I don’t ever intend to turn it into a career. There are many things I’m bad at when it comes to writing. For one, I have a tendency to go overboard when it comes to scenic descriptions. I tend to use way too many flowery words and metaphors, damaging the overall impact. That, and worldbuilding; I suck at building a compelling outer world, which is why genres like Fantasy are ones I’m so bad at. However, the one thing I know I’m good at is character and dialogue. I’m great at writing realistic dialogue for characters that feel human. It’s why the stuff I write currently is so reminiscent of the Literary genre. My stories are character-driven because characters are what I’m good at. I can establish their internal conflicts, their desires, their backstory, spread across numerous chapters. It’s the one saving grace that turns a boring, lacklustre plot, into something a little more compelling. I know I need to improve those other areas, but I love writing characters.

Something I started doing was thinking of every character's individual story - as in, what THEY do, what decisions THEY make, what their goals, fears and background are and how those things can affect them personally. I also suggest thinking of 4 words for each of your characters that sum them up well - I did this, and suddenly characters I thought were too similar now have distinct differences. I hope this helps!

5:$4When i started out, I just copied from boks, changing wordings, dubbed in fanfic without knowing about it. I was 10 years old...I scrabbled away at stories during the summer holidays and as I progressed, i created my own weird stories in my own world. It went from Belfast market bombs, to a boy with a hidden sight, to a boy who protected a school, to a hidden world of magic, to being a boy chosen by Peacekeepers to protect the world, to a time travelling adventure series, to dealing with random mosters. Now. I write about adventures on an alien planet.

i'm a new and young writer (under 13) and this helps a lot. i've always been really interested in book writing but my english lessons aren't teaching me anything and i just want to write a book. sadly, i had this huge idea of a massive 400 page novel with 3 books and a sequel until i thought to myself "can you actually do that?" and my immediate thought was "no. i can't." i've now came to the conclusion that i am going to make an approximately 50-90 page book! im currently planning/outlining a trilogy of novels i'm working on. i'm been planning since March and am nearly done and have been planning out character motives, how they interact, how it plays into the narrative etc. as well as developing the setting and the general worldbuilding. I already had a general idea for the looks and the names of my three main protagonists and an idea of what their personalities would be. I've been figuring out who the antagonist is and what their motives are what their capabilities are. I have working titles for the novels and have a general idea of how many chapters each novel has.

The thing with the plotter/panster thing, I've realised for me that I need the big beat points (at least for my current WIP) and then I just pants the inbetween. Also again the pants/plot thing I've found differs from project to project. One project may need to be plotted, another you may just find that you feel like you should just go for it. Does this happen to anyone else? Where for me, I jot down scenes in third person and when it comes to writing I write in first person. I've been wanting to know if it happens to other writers too, even if it's vice versa. Or do you just write even miscellaneous scenes in the same POV as your book? The fact that you've touched on things I've done when I first started writing but now I don't, through realisation. I actually love having smaller casts for books (I find it's more manageable for me), like perhaps 4 characters, two or one of them are/is the MC and the others are side characters. Then they'll just be people who won't even have names in the actual story, the ✨background characters✨, if you will.

Thanks for your video :) What helped me when writing longer stories was FanFiction. In the beginning of writing my own stories I was plotting a lot with scenes and everything but I always hit a dead end and stopped the project which was super frustrating. During the first Lockdown of Covid I wrote my very first novel and plantsed it. And then I did my first NaNoWriMo and did the same. And it felt so good not being totally lost but still have enough space to explore my story as I was writing it. That realization that I was somewhere in the middle was a real game changer for me :) When it comes to POVs, I simply try. I write the story in the POV that comes naturally and then after a few chapters I retype it all in first POV or second and read it to myself. Usually one really hits me. It's like your story opening even more to you. When that happens with a certain POV I stick with it. So for me playing around a bit and see what feels good is the way for me to unlock my stories :) When it comes to dialogue I like to see how other writers do it or how the dialogue works in certain TV Shows or movies I love. The dialogue in "Stranger Things" for example is amazing because it's very alive :D By the way, not all beginning writers have to be young ;) Even though I wrote stories when I was a kid and longer ones when I was a teenager I still consider myself as a beginner for I've really started getting into the craft itself a few years ago and I'm 38. Also I've only written three novels so far so there is a loooooong but very fun and exciting way ahead of me :) What kind of craft books are you recommending? I'd love to hear what you've read and what helped you with our writing :) Sending you love and creative vibes

when i started plotting and then began writing- i had barely any idea what would happen next. i knew that whatever NEEDED to happen in a sequel, but it was only once i finished my 1st draft that i realised it would become a trilogy. i feel slightly swamped with all the things i have to do- because its such a big undertaking due to the depth of the plot and the worlds i have designed for it 🫣💕
