#4:30 no that is incorrect the actor who played Ilyn Payne, Wilko Johnson did not die, he could not be in the show after season 2 , he was diagnosed in January 2013 with late stage pancreatic cancer but thankfully he ended up not dying and beat cancer and is still alive as of me making this comment. #29:18 looking forward to when you do that review! that scene with Stannis and Renly with the peach is so good and it was such a shame the show did not do that scene.
I agree that where they did things better was in individual scenes. The scene with Tyrion, Joffrey and The Hound watching the wildfire in the Blackwater was brilliant, showing the very different reactions of the three. As for what they got wrong. Agree with all of yours, and then some. The Jon assassination (though I'm of the camp that believes it is Tormund that was stabbed) completely left out all of the distractions that pointed to it being a planned act. Tyrion/Jamie. I remember ranting at my wife after their parting in the prison. Completely messed up both character arcs when they both lost the only person that they believed really cared about them. Not only did Edmure get completely shit on, but so did the Blackfish, a wonderfully complex character who became a one ply stereotype. Roose goes from being a very cagey player to a hapless side character. But one of the worst that you didn't touch on was the dropping of the whole Occupied Winterfell story. Barbry Dustin is one of my favorite characters, and much of the complexity of Theon's arc was lost.
Glad you added the peach. I didn't understand it until I saw a video of Grrm break it down a long time ago. Little things like that would have changed the show for the better
Hey man, really enjoy your videos :) keep up the good work! I will say though, the audio cutting out every few seconds is a little off-putting, maybe you could check that for the following videos :)
Yup ik I tried my best to make cuts that covered that up but yeah dont worry future videos are fixed with that issue. That annoyed me so much I didnt have time to record it again since it was a longer video. Idk Ig I didnt have the mic in it’s normal position!
Besides Jon’s reasoning to Mance, one of the other changes I really enjoyed was Tyrion’s trial and then the following Oberyn and Gregor fight. I love how Tyrion finally unleashes all the hatred and anger built up in him- instead of him just thinking about it on the inside. The line “I did not kill Joffrey but I wish that I had. Watching your little bastard die gave me more relief than a thousand lying whores.” is so freakin’ great and letting the trial and trial by combat be separated by a few episodes was a great idea. Didn’t like how Grrm made it one chapter. I think it benefitted by letting the moment breath.
I’ve been thinking about Jorah ‘the bear’. In Asoiaf, the bear is used as a metaphor for the patriarchy/chivalry. Could it be that Dany’s storyline is George’s commentary on patriarchial systems? Missandei kinda sounds like missandry, Dany’s plan to overthrow the patriarchy of Westeros with an army of castrated man, her dismissal of Jorah ‘her bear’ who’s signal is a bear and who has wronged her. Maybe i’m looking into things, but it looks to me like George is trying to say something about the patriarchy in Westeros with Dany’s storyline
Honestly I did see the entire series, but I really wanted to tune out after season 5 when Stannis died. Stannis winning the Game of Thrones is ending the world deserved!
I don't like the Arya and Tywin interactions in the show. It too unlikely for that situation to happen that it takes me out of the story. Also it creates the whole problem that you have to explain why she doesn't have Tywin killed that whole time.
Agreed ig I didn't of it that way I always liked those scenes firstly because the actors had great chemistry and it was cool seeing kind of a human side of Tywin we really don't see much
And I’m going to say this before I get to your worst changes. My least favorite changes personally are the whole young griff story line, how Tysha was handled in the show which completely changes Tyrions character beyond belief and Euron Greyjoy. But that’s just me.
