I've been missing our chats about one of my favorite gaming series - Dark Souls. Ranking the Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring bosses is always a blast - today I'd like to narrow the microscope on the Souls Series boss movesets, specifically highlighting the best boss attacks.
I'll include bossses such as Malenia from Elden Ring, Gwyn, Lord of Cinder from Dark Souls, Guardian Ape from Sekiro, Slave Knight Gael from Dark Souls 3, Ludwig the Holy Blade from Bloodborne, and False King Allant from Demon's Souls.

The attack is visually impressive but insanely bad gameplay wise Midir isn't that mechanically interesting to begin with and him oneshotting the player after minutes of endurance already is just shit

idk why all the replies are saying the attack is bad you get a huge punish at the end of it and it looks sick and its easy to dodge you only have to roll once at the beginning of the entire attack and just walk forward like can yall explain how its a poorly designed attack

I think my favorite is Dragonlord Placidusax, where it stabs a giant lightning spear into the ground that charges up into a massive explosion of fire and lightning. The music stops for this one attack and resumes on the explosion, and you add in the whole arena and other elements of the fight, which all adds to the experience.

I wish it was an unconditional one shot. This is literally an attack that takes a book out of Safi and yet I'm out here with my int build tanking this with 1/3 health left (60 vigor btw).

The one issue I have with that attack is I personally feel like it should just one shot regardless of vigor/defenses etc. The Dragonlord legit stops time during that attack and it won't even tap you if you're mildly competent at the game. He also suffers imo for having such little health as a late game boss. Along with a few others that would have had full health bars in earlier FROM titles.

Sword Saint Isshin’s 7 hit combo in his final phases will always be an iconic move that I’ll never forget how to deflect. The startup of the move is very recognizable once youve seen it a few times, and nothing beats the satisfaction of deflecting those two quick sword attacks followed by the 4 wide swings that rip up the surrounding silver grass. then mikiri countering the last thrust attack, so satisfying.

Inner Isshin also has as far as i'm aware the only attack in the game that follows a sweep, requiring you to deflect in the air after his sweep and right after he lunges at you with a thrust from the air... Chef's kiss🤌

Also inner genichiro's double lightning reversal is so fucking cool and feels amazing to counter successfully. ...and then the reward is not needing to do that ever again with sakura dance... not that you need to fight him again except bragging rights beating mortal journey, and if just if you feel like it. And perfect parrying base (and inner) genichiro's full flurry attack feels so fricken good.

Surprised Radahn's meteor didn't make the list. It's so unique and bombastic that I can't help but love it. The Fume Knight's slow sword sweep is also pretty great since it really punishes panic rolling and looks pretty clean. I think the Old Demon King's final explosion is also worth considering because it puts him into a weak and passive state he never recovers from.

1000% agree on Radahn. It's the most shocking attack in the series. The first time you experience it is so funny, you just don't know where he is then see a meteor hurdling towards you. Getting killed by it feels like looney tunes, it's so good.

I really love Dancer of the Boreal Valley’s seven piece spinning slash combo. The sight of her swirling towards you as the music soars and the room burns was terrifying on my first playthrough.

The mid-air crossbow attack Gael does is probably my favorite attack for just how satisfying it is to dodge. Either that for Maliketh’s three throws into his sweep attack

I gotta give a nod to Dragonlord Placidusax's Double Laser Bonanza. While it's very much an ode to Midir's laser, it has one piece of it that I adore. Yes, it's an extremely high damage, long range, wide area attack that demands very precise dodges in sequence to not get fried, and dodging it is extremely satisfying. But the fact that its use is scripted means you can actually manipulate where he is when he uses it. Give it's always signalled by his roar -> triple red lightning -> disappearing after the first strike, if you run towards the wall when he'd disappeared, you can actually cause him to run into the wall when he swoops from the air, leaving you in position to get behind him quickly and heavily punish him while he's doing his laser attack. It highly rewards clever positioning and game knowledge, and that's something I love.

It's a little thing, but in Mohg phase 2 he can do a followup to a trident thrust where he quickly twirls the trident to spray bloodflame all around. It's not that mechanically interesting, and it's very easy to dodge once you understand the fight, but I just love the animation. Also the best part about the Guardian Ape overhead slash is the sound of you deflecting it: it's immensely satisfying.

Margit's phase transition should be here. Its an awesome looking attack with an even better punish. If you dont know, when he begins his hammer sweep you jump the swing and hit Margit with a light jump attack as he flies up into the sky. The timing is so tight but its such a rewarding punish to land. Just like the rest of Margit, the skill ceiling is so high and theres so much room to optimize

While I also love Headless Ape's overhead slam (It's so puppet-like, I adore it so), I would have personally put Inner Genichiro's Lightning Reflection. It's so cool to be able to leap into the air to deflect a whole ass bolt of lightning in the base Genichiro fight. It becomes amazing when _he leaps into the air to deflect your deflected lightning attack right back at you, which you counter by redeflecting it back at him once again_ in the Inner Genichiro fight. It's so god damn anime, it fulfills all my dreams, and it becomes even better with combat arts like Sakura Dance

I full on shouted "Get F*CKED, GENICHIRO" when I beat his gate, because I was so stressed and hyped the entire fight The only problem with the gates and Inner bosses is going back to fight the base versions. Mine is Manus' dark magic storm. It's fair, chillingly evokes storm imagery, fits the boss's character, and best of all if you use the pendant from the area ONCE with the right timing you can stand still and deflect everything around you in an incredible visual spectacle that feels downright badass. I came across this last point while doing an Artorias cosplay run and it was the single best 1.5sec of all of Souls for me.

I feel like this is unpopular but I love the ring attack that Elden Beast has where you have to jump the three circles that close in on you. One of the most unique attacks and the series and I get such an adrenaline rush when the attack comes up.

I have to mention a boss that consistently gets forgotten in these kind of lists by most people and that's Morgott. He has some cool and unique attacks on his own like one of the most brutal looking grabs in the series, the rain of swords that splits the arena in 5 and the big desperation flurry that he only does at very low health but I've found that I love the feel of his basic combos. He is designed from the ground up to roll catch the shit out of you. He has multiple slashes to start a combo, all varying in timing from very fast to moderately slow, to keep you on your toes. His basic follow ups have the same properties as well but are all distinctly telegraphed if you know what to look for. But that is not all because he also has multiple movement options in between them all serving a different purpose. A leap to the left that is followed by a fast conjured sword slash. A dagger slice then a jump away that throws more daggers at you and creates distance. A one handed somersault to the right that is followed up by a sliding slice which is then followed up by a spin combo into the air if you're close enough which you can take advantage of its poor tracking for a massive opening. Or a 360° spin slash that is then followed up by a massive leap across the arena. The feeling you get when you successfully dodge every single one of his mixups is unparalleled for me.

I think my favorite attack string has to be Fume Knight Raime's variable phase 1 combo. He'll do 3 quick swipes with the Fume Sword before judging your proximity. If you're still in range, he'll swing the massive ultragreatsword once. If you're still in range, he'll do it one more time. It's a total of 5 hits that have incredible variance in their timing. It's never guaranteed so you always have to see his animation tells if he's going to follow-up any of those attacks until they end so your attacks are never going to be as free to punish his recovery. Special mention to his own "get off me" backswing attacks are really fast, especially in phase 2. My other pick is Inner Father (Owl's) and his phase 2 Mist Raven combos. There's two versions of it but the coolest one for me is the running slash, aerial shuriken toss, and jumping overhead swing which he'll follow up with a sweep if you avoid it.

Maybe not a true boss but i personally love Stray Demon's grab attack from DS3 simply for the lols of it being able to yeet you off the High Wall. 😂 Other than that, i think that Isshin Sword Saint's pistol attack and the overhead spear stab are some of the most satisfying moves in the series. And let's not forget the lighting attacks you deflect from both Genichiro and Sword Saint.

I will never forget the epic fight against the mist noble in Sekiro. I have never expected an enemy to have this powerful attacks. Jokes aside parryieng lightning attacks was also very fun.

A few more really cool attacks that weren’t here were Sakura dance from inner genichiro, Frieda’s black flame slam, and lady Maria’s slam in phase 3. But out of those 3, Sakura dance is definitely the best. Genichiro uses it at the very beginning of the fight, and then does a lightning reversal of your lightning in phase 2. It’s even cooler if you have the attack and can reverse his reversal with the very same attack he just used against you. Great vid btw all of these attacks deserved the top spots.

Based on aesthetics and atmosphere alone, these should definitely be somewhere near the top: - Placidusax's massive AoE - Midir's low health laser attack - The Living Failures meteor attack - Fire Giant shooting molten rocks out of his stomach mouth - Astel suspending gravity - Radahn crashing into the Earth - The teleporting attacks from Lothric & Lorian

Nice list!! For me my favorite has to be the spear combo used by Isshin the Sword Saint where he slams the ground multiple times and ends with a red kanji illuminated thrust at the end. If you can perfectly parry every slam in that combo and then Mikiri Counter the thrust at the end, you feel like a legend 👏🏼

Maliketh's sword projectiles is up there as one of my favorites - the fact that hes in the air or perching on the pillars when shooting them combined with the variety of follow ups makes them fun to dodge and cool to look at

One attack I particularly like is from Father Gascoigne, specifically his roll into upward slash. First off: it's a satisfying parry. That's admittedly very common in bloodborne (since any parry is satisfying when you're using a flipping gun), but it's still a plus. Second: animation. The way the axe scrapes along the ground is very cool. But those are really just icing on the cake, because the best part about it is that it teaches the player how to be a hunter. Going through the game for the first time, most players won't know how to really fight. It's especially a problem when you are used to the souls games, where you have to be much more defensive. So seeing a boss that is clearly another hunter, uses the same tools as you, and looks much more experienced, it makes sense that maybe you should try some of his tactics. And this attack shows how you play bloodborne. No waiting for the perfect moment, no hiding behind a shield, a hunter uses his agility to dash into close quarters to quickly and aggressively take down his prey. And this very tactic will serve you well for your entire playthrough, as you dance in and out of your opponent's range while constantly laying on aggression.

Imo the best attack has to be the Gascoigne Beast Flurry. The aggression but it's so manageable to dodge and punish, but you have to do it in a very aggressive way, it just encapsulates Bloodborne in my eyes, and is so satisfying to avoid as well. I also love Morgott's spinning sword flurry for the same reason. Fair dodge opportunities but pretty avoidable and forces you to stay aggro the whole time.

Most, if not all grab attacks are worthy of this list. Artorius' leaping attacks are another honourable mention, as is Godrick's wind combo. Sir Alonne's charge attacks are brutal but fair, notable in dark souls 2's lacklustre roster. My favourite attack though, is Maliketh's sword beam combo, due to it's many components, end attacks and its predictability based on air time and distance. It's surprisingly fair once you realise it's core mechanics and it always gives you an attack opportunity to use as you see fit.

On my Top Ten is definitivly the big Leap of Artorias, the Abysswalker. It's a beautiful gap closer with a fair window to dodge. It mostly comes up when you are at least barely out of reach for his other moves. No to Mention that he is always starting the fight with it. He holds up the pressure, he initiates you first Fight with him and he will always be the one who is testing you to survive the abyss he could not.

Interesting how you rank stuff cuz my list for best attacks would be more so just "is it cool?" xD So I would think stuff like: Manus's circular ring of dark orbs, Darklurker splitting (technically a mechanic though), Midir laser, Isshin's lightning, Rykard's rain of skulls, Astel's gravity grab, etc. Stuff like this.

One of my favorite boss attacks is when Isshin throws lightning at you, forcing the Lightning Deflect Counter. It feels so good reacting to it, and it's super cool and visually awesome.Special mention to when he pulls out the glock.

Frieda's invisible grab in phase one. For most it's not a threat anymore but my God was it beautiful getting tossed and slammed in a panic learning that fight.

Man, I was hoping Placidusax would be on this. His turning into a lightning cloud and coming down on you is one of the coolest things I've seen in a game.

Malenia's sliding slashes used to be a move that I hated, but after many tries I finally realized that you can dodge it by just rolling diagonally to the right and if you have a weapon that can stagger her (anything bigger than a dagger), you can interrupt the following heavy slash without problem

I really like Malenia's second phase moves. The one where she flies in the air and then dives to you for two consecutive hits with a little time in between them is such a spectacle. With the wings and the painting-esque visuals of that phase, she feels like a Valkyrie.

Dragonlord placidusaxs crazy nuke is awesome for me, the halting of the music and sound effects of the doombolt going off are absolutely insane giving you a taste of how powerful this dragonlord used to be. Also I personally loved Mohgs Nihil. It raises the stakes so high and the first time I heard him start counting down I was panicking wondering what in the shit he was counting to 😂😂

Personally, Godfrey has some of my all-time favourite attacks, which are either the Fissure combo finisher or the AoE Eruption variant of his 2nd Phase. That attack other than the Powerbomb (My 3rd favourite attack if we count both phases) made my blood boil in excitement, especially post Regal Roar or HL Earthshaker. The fissure combo is just so fun to dodge and at the same time the visual of that attack is just adrenaline inducing, looking at how he splits the earth in two while an arena wide shockwave comes into play when he digs his axe deeper. In the midst of totally enjoying myself dodging/jumping his axe swings or jumping his stomp shockwaves and later on to be met with that combo finisher, I would laugh in ecstasy upon strafing his initial slam, jumping the arena-wide shockwave as he plunges his axe deeper and then outspacing the eruption to catch the full display of stones and magma rising up. The Eruption in his 2nd Phase had me in a similar feel except that I would jump twice whilst outspacing the eruption. I also love Placidusax’s nuke. Easily one of the best attack in any soulslike I’ve played. The way Placi does the nuke attack feels badass and I love how the music stops as the nuke’s incoming, as if to tell the player to run or die. The only wish I had for that attack is that it is a oneshot and it has slightly more range, because that would make it even better with the music stop and the entire build-up of the nuke. Some other mentions would be Maliketh’s aerial acrobatics, Rykard’s Rancor Frenzy, Lady Maria/Sister Friede’s High Jump Slam, Gael’s Phase 3 Soul Scatter AoE, Soul of Cinder’s 5 hit combo, Lorian’s Trail of Light and Midir’s Phase 2 Laser

It's so difficult to make a list about these epic games that i can't even begin. So many years playing them and so much joy, hate, frustration and euphoria after each battle. Not very related but one of the most memorable moments for me was facing the great grey wolf Sif. He's so energic swinging that huge sword and when he takes enough damage all that energy fails but he just can't stop. It's a very emotional fight. I love to mikiri the owl father in Sekiro. It's so satisfying. Throwing back the dragon and Ishing bolt attacks is amazing too.

Just 10 picks can never make a list like this justice, lol. Just from Elden Ring, I think that Maliketh's "judgement cuts", Radahn's corkscrew smash, Morgott's spastic combo, Fortissax's spinning lightning blade, Mohg's fire punch into spear combo are unforgettable bangers, and that's just on top of my head from that one game. And don't get me started on e.g Lady Maria and her fire blood circular slash, or the Nameless King's jump attack, or Artorias' flip move... Care to make a top 50 list? :)

My favorite attack is the bloodflame pools Mohg scatters across the arena in phase 2. I love how they make you adjust your positioing to avoid them and reward staying close to the boss, while never neing unfair to avoid.

Personally, a lot of my favorite moves from the series are the grabs, even though most likely means youre dead but the fallingstar beast picking you up with his pincers, Astels clone grab, Malenia throwing you then catching you on her sword, Maria hugging you, Horah Loux powerbombing you. i also love the Mergos Wet-nurse blender move and the Crucible Knights “Aspects of the Crucible Wings” attack (which I wish FROM would give us as an incant)

I’m really surprised more attacks from Sekiro didn’t make the list. The lightning reversals and Isshin’s seven hit spear combo are probably my two favourite attacks in the whole series

One of my favorites is astels meteor. It’s one of the coolest looking attacks in the series but it’s perfectly reasonable to avoid and meteor attacks are objectively cool

I think ludwigs screaming charge was always his coolest move lol. Also i think Ishiin has a couple moves that could be here, either the crazy wombo combo thats so satisfying to finally nail the deflect timing, or the lighting because it looks cool, is dangerous but if skilled gives you a huge reward, and ultimately is final tool to finishing him. Also, i love Ornstein's busted charge from the other list, always thought it added character to the fight.

Nice video. Tricky thing to evaluate, individual attacks. My list would be, in no order: 1) Margit's holy daggers. Great move to keep pressure on you, also looks beautiful 2) Phase 3 Gael, just amazing 3) Frieda's ghost attack, easy to get caught out by and requires some thinking to work out 4) Artorias's flips 5) Manus's dark magic 6) Gundyr's combo into shoulder slam 7) Fume Knight's standard combo 8) Crucible knight's tail spin 9) Lorian's teleport combo 10) Placidusax's nuke

For me, I have a newfound love for Margit's attack, that you can see people making him do, where you go in, dodge back wards twice, than he does the thrust to the ground. Satisfying to pull it off, and a good punish-window too.

- I love the ashina cross from Sekiro. Encompass the core spirit of the game into one brutally beautiful move: either miss it and get rekt, or parry it and punish your oponent for it. Perfect timing and vigilance required, and the sound of deflects... - Sekiro in general has some amazing moves. To chose, it would be owl father for me. Seems such a daunting iron wall, but once you understand the subtle ways to grab openings at his health into his deadly combos makes you admire the beauty of the fact, especially the most badass mikiri in the game against shadow fall (and the one he uses against you as well of course). - Ser Alonne's charge and jump (biased, struggling to obtain his no-hit death animation had adrenaline making me fall in love) - All of Gael's first phase swords move. Just fast and wide enough to force you on edge, with the cleave of an avalanche. Screams to you "don't get hit" and feels like you're dodging canon shots by an inch, In short Dark Souls 3 at its best. Mention to the Dragonslayer's armor combos in the same vibe.

Somebody already mentioned Artorias, so Imma bring up Owl Father. My absolute favorite boss fight across Sekiro, Owl Father in both fights is amazing, made all the more so with how he fights. While most bosses are either honorable warriors, mindless beasts, or Flute Noble, Owl Father’s usage of tools is such a refreshing sight. In the first fight, he uses Shuriken, an Anti-Heal bomb, and Smoke bombs to keep you on your toes. But when he busts out the Firecrackers in the memory fight, it really hammers home how he’s just like you: a Shinobi who fights with every advantage he can. Honorable mention to the Owl he summons, really cool spectacle and fits thematically. Not really a tool he pulls out of a bag tho

1:35 THIS. At least when the execution is slower with delayed windup (Midir, Gael) you feel rewarded for not giving in to your panic roll instincts, by waiting for the right time. The instant execution from delayed windup feels like a panic punish with no reward for waiting for the right timing to react; instead reducing boss fights to memorising timings and roll directions.
