Top 10 Best Place To Retire in The United States. Wear Sunscreen.
This is a much-requested video. Hopefully, we will all be able to retire someday. Most people think the only place anyone ever retires to is Arizona or Florida. A lot do, but for some, things like heat and humidity make them look elsewhere. If you do get a chance to retire, these are some cities you might want to do it in. Some of them you'll need some sunscreen.
.
Thanks for stopping by The world according to Briggs, I make lists. Not just lists of random stuff, I make them about states, cities, towns and other places in the United States. I post 3 times a week and sometimes live stream. Enjoy.

How I chose where to retire: 1: no state taxes on income, including retirement pay 2: mild winters -- no snow to shovel 3: no taxes on groceries and medications 4: one or more major medical centers nearby 5. modest housing costs 6. modest cost for electrical power (lower cost for air conditioning) 7. low crime rates in the suburbs 8. handicap van transport + public transportation and plenty of modest cost Uber/Lift/taxi services for shopping or medical appointments when it is time to give up that driver's license 9. lots of choices for low-cost fun things to do 10. many choices for discount, bargain and thrift shopping 11. no hurricanes 12. hardly ever any tornadoes 13. hardly ever any flooding So, using my list, I moved from costly Hawaii to southern Nevada and have not regretted it.

Don't tell anyone, but Florida has everything on your criteria also, except an occasional hurricane. But living 50 miles inland Hurricanes are more of a nuisance than a danger. Just buy a generator, for the power outages. I live in Gainesville. 50 miles to the gulf, 55 miles to the Atlantic. 158 ft above sea level. GOD bless you, you got out of Hawaii alive. Hawaii, California, New York and Illinois are the 4 states in this country that I have absolutely no interest in ever visiting or living in. And I grew up in Illinois, but once I left there, I have no desire to ever return. I pay a fraction of the taxes in Florida that I paid in Illinois, nothing but tax and spend Democrats in Illinois.

@@thebusterdog6358 I have lived in Florida before. I chose not to relocate to Florida because I do not like high humidity and mildew, mosquitos, tornados, frequent lightening strikes or hurricane winds and the flooding that accompanies them. Florida has cockroaches, mold, hurricanes, and with expected ocean rise, most of the state may be under water in 12-15 years. Hurricane Irma hit in September 2017 and Hurricane Michael hit October 2018, leaving major damage and massive cleanup still going on.

It is better to rent when you retire. Not to sound grim, however time on earth is very short after people retire. Houses have lots of expenses and demands for upkeep. So if you have no house to use as collateral, it does not pay to buy a home when you retire. Just rent.
@jameshickok2349
@jameshickok2349 4 года назад
@Blake T Its all going to depend on a person's situation for money, family, health, etc. I agree its best to have no mortgage at all with a paid for home. I was hoping to be a snowbird but my wife wanted to keep working. Several people I know, actually more than several., have homes in Vegas, Phoenix area and southern NM. We owned a lake home a few years ago and got rid of it. Always maintenance to do. A number of others rent a condo or a house for the winter. IIRC they watch some websites for places to rent, especially in Vegas and Phoenix metro area. Others do the RV thing but we used to do that when we were younger and the RV "parks" I've seen look pretty packed. Not sure I want to live in a stationary camper for 5 months though. Best option is have a relative buy a house with a guest room, like my brother's! :)

Lake of the Ozarks in mid-Missouri should be on the list, especially if you're looking to get away from major cities and love being outdoors and on the water. Great restaurants and shopping, low taxes and crime rates, good schools, and cheap waterfront condos and homes. $200-300,000 gets a great waterfront home with your own private boat dock. (I can fish from the deck off my living room!) Condos are plentiful and even cheaper. Lots of retirees and related organizations. You get most city amenities without the people (except on summer weekends).

I'm glad you didn't highlight the retirement town close to me. I prefer it doesn't get advertised. I live in snow country north of there about 65 miles. I like where we live now, but it is expensive (145% of national average), but once you pay off your home that drops to about 120% of the national average. We have a gem of a hospital and our air conditioning bill is zero. Shoveling snow is becoming more difficult as we age, mainly because we are still pretty achy all of the day after we have shoveled. It makes it hard when we get back to back storms for a week or more. That is why we are looking at the lower elevation town south of us. It is much hotter there and temperatures as high as 105 can occur with very low humidity. The health care is good, but there aren't enough providers, so that can be a bit challenging when you first move there. About half the locations you listed have much higher humidity than I care to live in. I've avoided humidity once I moved away from where I grew up near the ocean. I'm glad you picked locations that are not at the top of the retirement radar. I lived near a few of them and they don't need additional publicity.

Wow ! You made Mesquite, Nevada #1 and you even said it was close to St. George, Utah ! I live in St. George, and no, I am NOT a mormon ( Galatians 1:6-9), but after you mentioned Provo, Utah as #10, I figured St. George would be #1 - #9. I'm retired here myself and would NEVER want to live again in California again ( I have virtually lived there from 1957 - 2010 ) while it's slowly becoming like Venezuela !!!

Good move from Cali. Who wants to pay high taxes to have their cities and neighborhoods trashed? Sanctuary City policies tell criminals something like: Hey, come here, where stupid people will pay for all your services; you can commit crimes not be prosecuted; pay no taxes; etc.. Bad policies that lead to crime, destruction, and citizen and state insolvency.

@@peterpan8263 I really appreciate your input. Who knows what I'll do. It's just the constant drum beat of bigger and more intrusive government makes me crazy. You can't have a bag at the grocery store. You can't have a plastic straw. You can't have a paper receipt. We're raising your taxes so we can provide more for the homeless--resulting in more homeless. You can't have a little bottle of hand lotion or shampoo at the hotel. Again, thanks for your answer. I don't want to be the guy who jumps out of the frying pan into the fire :-)

@@josephgaviota Agreed! Time to get out before it's too late. The police are understaffed and bogged down with "laws". Homeless and immigrants rule the roost here. It's going to get much worse. The apocalyptic fires and floods just show God's not happy with the government here. I'm afraid it's going to just get worse unless the govnmt. changes and that won't be for several years, if that. Good luck moving! I'm looking too. Nothing to do in NV. I like Ivins, Utah or Santa Clara. Southern Utah has lots to do, conservative and friendly. Not as many Mormons as up northern Utah and many Californian's are moving there.

Been to Mesquite. There's a reason why it's so cheap: it's a shithole. Desert on the edge of beautiful red rocks, about an hour northeast of Vegas. Dry, of the type of town where the best food is a diner with red checker tablecloths. Went to the movies and we were the only two in the Cineplex. Dead, I mean the town is dead. BTW the guy that used those auto rifles in Vegas, y'know the one that killed like 59 people ? well, he's from Mesquite.

I picked Bellingham, WA to retire but health problems led to a change of plans. The moderate weather was a major factor and prices “were” reasonable when I started to search in the mid 2000’s (pre-Great Recession). Bought a lot on which we were going to build a house. I also looked at the area between Port Angeles through Sequim to Port Townsend, WA. Beautiful, moderate climate in the rain shield of Mt Olympus. Less than 20” of precipitation per year.

They are both very hot and humid in the summertime but great cities with lots to do besides just swimming, although in the summertime you really will want to be in water of some kind. There is tons of history in both cities and amazing restaurants in both. I live about 3 1/2 hours from Charleston.
