Top 10 Best Rock Broadway Musicals of All Time 

"Next to Normal" is one of my favourite musicals, and tremendously captures the long term effects of mental illness not just on the individual themselves, but on their entire family as well.

In my opinion JCSS, is the best rock musical by far. Every song in that album is just a masterpiece.

Rock of ages. It was seeing that live and being in a production of Oliver that got me into theater

The actor who played Jack Black's character in the Broadway adaptation of "School Of Rock" bears a pretty strong resemblance to Jack Black himself

Hedwig means the world to me. The show made me feel so deeply and the music has so much meaning. Hedwig never fails to make me cry and I am so glad that it got the top spot.

HEDWIG really deserves the #1 spot, though I would’ve switched RENT and HAIR, since the latter is the original topical rock ensemble shows and more recent entries like RENT and JAGGED LITTLE PILL owe a debt to HAIR

Was expecting Rent and Hedwig to be the top two. While I like Rent, Hedwig has my heart for life. Origin Of Love brings me to tears 10+ years later

Rock of Ages is the ultimate juke box musical. Spring Awakening and Jesus Christ Superstar are my favs. Grease is such a classic, it deserves to be in the top ten.

The best one is Jesus Christ Superstar for me, closely followed by Hair. JCS's music is timeless and everyone knows every song.

81: Stick It To The Man! School Of Rock: The Musical blew my mind at New York on my birthday and again back at home. The actor that plays Dewey is hilariously great and the kids know how to rock!

My thoughts on this list 10. Haven’t seen this musical yet but let me tell you something I can’t wait to. I listened to this album all throughout middle & high school. 9. My favorite song from American Idiot is Wake Up When September Ends. 8. Haven’t seen it yet. 7. Haven’t seen it. 6. Haven’t seen it. It sounds very interesting. 5. I have not seen this but have heard the cast album. Not a huge fan. I was actually impressed by Deaf West’s revival. 4. One of my favorite musicals based on the Bible. Children Of Eden follows close behind. 3. Hair was my high school’s musical in my sophomore year. I did not appreciate it until about 7 years later when I saw the Broadway revival. The songs are quite powerful. 2. RENT is one of my favorite musicals of all time….. so glad it Is on your list Emily. Grease should be number 1! I have never seen Hedwig & The Angry Inch.

TBH American Idiot, the album was my favorite but the musical, I MEAN changed my life and it was there when I needed it the most. I love theatre and this showed me anything was possible. It made me fall in love more with it.

I love most of these but seriously how was Rocky Horror an honorable mention and not at least number 2 or 3?? Hedwig, Rocky Horror, and Rent should have been 1, 2, and 3 in the order. Grease and School of Rock should have been included as well.

Gonna see School of Rock live on Wednesday. I'm excited.

Wait..that is what "wake me up when september ends" is about? Its one of the few green day songs i do not like due to how often it was played on the radio. (It is also why i do not like "give it away" by red hot chille peppers. Played too often) New respect knowing what it was about now.

This is a pretty broad definition of "rock" considering "Rock of Ages" wasn't on this but "Grease" and "Passing Strange" were. I mean they got #1 right, but "Tommy" shouldn't have even made the honorable mentions.

Yeah, so about this crap list. Grease is not only the best rock musical. It is the best movie musical. And without hyperbole - the best musical ever made ever in perpetuity. Rent is absolute garbage. It is barely a musical and it is certainly not a "rock" anything. It is pap from start to finish. Take Rocky Horror out of the joke of an Honorably Mention category. And put Little Shop somewhere.
