They may have a reputation for being bad, but what are the best straight-to-DVD Disney sequels? We’ll be taking a look at those Disney follow-ups that didn’t quite make the cut for a wide theatrical release, but still made the original movie proud by honoring its characters, witty dialogue, and original premise. Although we call them sequels, what we really mean is any movie released after the original, which can include prequels, midquels, and spinoffs. MsMojo ranks the best straight-to-DVD Disney sequels. “The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride” is criminally underrated. If the movie had gotten a theatrical release, I bet it would have grossed more than many other Disney Classics did....and the same goes for “Aladdin and the King of Thieves”.

@ByD bugs and daffy peluche-turas yes. Tarzan 2 and The Lion King 1 1/2 are the only decent ones tho. Fox and the Hound 2 and both of the Beauty & the Beast midquels are straight up terrible. Yes, Beauty and the Beast has TWO straight-to-video follow ups, and they're both awful

Yes, you should watch the Lion King 2. I will however, always hold up Aladdin and the King of Thieves as the shining example of why 'Straight to Video' isn't synonymous with 'bad'. They brought back Robin Williams and bumped the animation quality back up to the levels of the original film. Sa'Luk is quite badass, actually getting a better villain song than Jafar! I also appreciate that they made a unique design for every single one of the 40 thieves.

Shocked that Lion King 2 is so low, it’s an amazing film that deals with prejudice in a very real way. Also shocked theres not even a mention of Lady and the Tramp2 or Little Mermaid 2.

I remember watching The Lion King 2 all the time at my grandparents' when I was younger. That and The Return of Jafar, and they became my favorite direct to video sequels. I think my grandma still has the VHS tapes for them

I'm so glad to see King of Thieves in this list; it definitely deserves it. As good as it was I'd still love to see the original script that was axed in favor of Cassim's inclusion, though: Mozenrath being Aladdin's half-brother! It's why they both look so much alike in the TV series.

I was so bumbed they never kept that Mozenrath and Aladdin are brothers. Also in the first Aladdin they took out his mother and the song "Proud of your Boy". I remember having that song on a tape and listening to it on a tape recorder lol. But it was my favorite Aladdin sequel because 'Return of Jafar' wasn't as great. Plus Robin Williams came back for 'King of Thieves' 😁.

@@TheLatinaBabyGurl You probably already know this but RoJ was supposed to be the first four episodes of the TV series. They decided to release it as a direct-to-video sequel as an experiment instead and it ended up outselling Pretty Woman on home video, causing the explosion of Disney DtV sequels. 🙂 And oh yeah they _completely_ rewrote the script for the first movie! He had a mother, three brothers, Jafar was his uncle, and there were two genies: the Genie of the lamp and the Genie of the ring. Aladdin and Jasmine were also about 14, but the ages were upped to make the romance believable. Parts of Friend Like Me had already been animated at that point, so if you look really close you can still see brief glimpses where Aladdin looks much younger. The original songs made for that first script were released on the "The Music Behind the Magic" box set back in the '90s, and most of the "new" songs in the Broadway production were actually those original deleted songs: "Proud of Your Boy", "Babkak, Omar, Aladdin, Cassim", and "High Adventure". (The lyric "my finger's bleeding!" in High Adventure originally referred to the ring of the other Genie.) I am a hardcore Aladdin fan if you can't tell. lol

They only redid the script (slightly) because Robin Williams came back as the Genie. Cassim was ALWAYS in it.

TLM2 was not a good movie. If felt rehashed, rushed, generic and the animation was pretty cheap. The only redeeming quality of that movie was the emotional drama between Ariel and Melody and I guess Melody was a pretty likable character.

The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride is actually quite an interesting tale in and of itself. To the point where I would say that the "Aladdin" and "Lion King" trilogies are the two best Disney Trilogies to date imho.

No, this was one of the rare sequels made by Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS or Disney Animation for short), which is Walt's original studio, and it was not direct-to-video. WDAS have only ever made 5 sequels, and they were all theatrical because they don't do direct-to-video at all. Their sequels are: _The Rescuers Down Under_ (1990), _Fantasia 2000_ (1999), _Winnie the Pooh_ (2011), _Ralph Breaks the Internet_ (2018), and _Frozen II_ (2019, currently playing in theaters). That's all the sequels they've ever made out of 58 movies total. Walt Disney disliked sequels--he'd rather have his studio make something new each time. :)

The pilot for the show Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command is almost the same as the movie on DVD, except with Buzz’s dialogue re-dubbed by Patrick Warburton, who was the voice of Buzz in the show

I don't know if this is what the creators intended, but in keeping with the Disney/Shakespeare parallels, Lion King 1 1/2 seems similar in concept to the Tom Stoppard play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, which tells the Hamlet story from their perspective.

In my house, An Extremely Goofy Movie is a more beloved film than the original. It's definitely just as good

Even though The Jungle Book 2 and Return To Never Land were released to theaters, Return To Never Land should've been included in this video anyways as it was still made by the same studio as most DTV Disney sequels, and they're still the same quality as the other DTV sequels
