I always want to address how Simba in LK2 and Ariel in TLM2 do similar things but one works out a lot better: both kinda turn into massive hypocrites and do the exact same thing as parents that they'd struggled with their own fathers. But with Simba, it's addressed with a complexity; he was still a child when his father died and he wants to emulate a grandiose version of a great man, feeling unable to match him. With Ariel she knows exactly what Triton did wrong, but she does the exact same thing, for absolutely no reason.

I think the reason I enjoyed Kronk’s New Groove was because of he was portrayed. Despite being this huge buff guy, he does things that are not seen as masculine traditionally. He talks with woodland creatures, is shown to be very sensitive at times, and enjoys cooking. He wouldn’t be seen as “traditionally masculine” despite his physical appearance. So trying to earn the approval of his father who’s probably berated him or judged him for not being this tradition masculine guy, was something I sorta enjoyed.

The Lion King is Hamlet. The Lion King II Simba's Pride is Romeo & Juliet. And The Lion King 1 1/2 is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead which means the entire franchise comes full circle with two stories based on concepts of Shakespeare while the third comes from a concept based on two secondary characters from Hamlet. In my opinion,this means The Lion King has gotten some of the best direct to DVD sequels.

In defence of Stitch has a Glitch's ending, the reasoning behind Stitch coming back to life was set up earlier in the movie when Lilo tells the story of the Goddess Hi'iaka, the final line of that story being that "Love is more powerful than death." Then, during the scene where Stitch comes back to life, they play the same song that not only played when Lilo told that story to Stitch, but also when they practiced that story and dance for the hula competition throughout the movie. I've seen that movie too many times.

I haven't seen the third Little Mermaid in sooo long! I actually like Bambi 2 more than the original, since it genuinely addresses the grief and pain of Bambi loosing his mother, his relationship with his father is well developed, touching, and gives the character more depth than just “stern, tough dad”, with BEAUTIFUL animation, decent pacing and atmosphere, an amazing music score, and you can really tell that the people working on it respected the original, and wanted to make something just as good.

Still, during the original Bambi, the father was portrayed as incredibly stoic and I wished they stayed consistent with it as Just Stop says. And even the idea that he stays silent and only speaks little words, while showing reactions with body reactions and movement would've matched the first movie really great, since the first movie had little to no words. They could've kept the relationship development, especially Bambi's experience, but the conflict and the father's portrayal is just really generic that it doesn't do justice to its concept.

@cloverbun2574 7 месяцев назад
I think it really ruins the original's concept if you take it too seriously (like me lol). Bambi's mother dying marked the end of his childhood. He was no longer protected and assured of love in his life. Despite these hardships he grew up to be noble and kind. Then, when confronted with Man, his childhood trauma stares him dead in the face and he's so tempted to just give up, to let it take him like it did his mother, but he is forced to go through it, knowing it's the only way forward. It's so tragic and rough and magical, that to think all this time he was buddy buddy with his awesome pappy it just really takes away the edge. If they had just allowed the movie to keep the same tone, but no, they wanted it to be positive and cute. Come to think of it, since the midquel is a wonderful movie on its own, it probably would have worked better as a sequel. Bambi could have taken the role of the prince, and one of his children the role of Bambi. Together they could have sort of broken what is hinted to be a bleak cycle of the princes. The only thing I can't imagine is them killing off Faline, but maybe you could write around that somehow, haha.

Of all the “main character’s kid” characters, Scamp stands out as actually being established long before the movie. He’s been a recurring character in Disney comics for decades, so when the movie came out he already had a well-known localized name in areas where Disney comics are still a mainstream thing (notably Scandinavia). Considering how comics continuity is usually ignored by Disney’s animation department, for me as a habitual comic reader it was kind of a mindfuck seeing that one character getting a movie at the time.

Just a small correction there. Cinderella 3 is after 2. I know this because the opening song takes place a year after the original, where 2 picks up from. So, the stepmother must have banished the baker from the second movie and after the film’s events, Anastasia finds him, without her mum stopping her. Would explain why she portrayed Anastasia being the woman from the ball than the other sister, aside from the obvious reason of her thinking Anastasia would be easier to control. She was also marrying her off before she could disobey her and potentially run off with someone of low status, like she already tried to do. That way, she'd only have to worry about marrying Drizella, who is much more obedient and is thus less of a flight risk.

@PeninsulaPaintings
@PeninsulaPaintings 2 года назад
Gotta disagree about 'genuine continuation' aspect. Simba's Pride has so many plot holes that it's basically a fan fiction with a budget, Kovu and Zira being the biggest plot holes in themselves. Not to mention the character derailment and clearly misunderstanding certain elements from the first film (like Mufasa's ghost that was never supposed to be literal). Out of the three, Simba's Pride also looks the worst by far! A hideous blue tint they put in it; warps the characters' colour palettes so badly! Simba's model looks off, Nala only exists to spew incorrect wisdom, Kiara is a love-sick moron - choosing to believe a Lion she's known for a day and a half over her own father, Kovu has a bland personality, and Zazu weirdly got a pair of dentures between movies for some reason. But uh..least the songs are decent - although the best one (He Lives In You) was taken from the Broadway show, so I can't even give SP credit for that one. I'm willing to bet that most people who declare Simba's Pride the 'best Disney sequel' haven't actually watched it in a while, and are going off how much they liked it as kids.

Whenever I think back to these movies I just remember how much I miss hand-drawn animation from Disney. Back when these DVD movies were coming out I remember a lot of people criticizing the animation for being lower quality than the theatrical Disney movies, and everyone was hyping up how outdated traditional animation was in contrast to the shiny new 3D stuff coming from Pixar or Dreamworks, yet the animation in most of those DVD movies has aged a lot better than basically any CGI films from the same release years despite being made on a minuscule fraction of the budgets. I'd adore a new Disney movie that looked like Bambi 2 or Cinderella 3 rather than yet another film looking like Tangled or Frozen.
@kieranstark7213

Thank you! The hand-drawn animation from DisneyToon’s movies (mainly in the 2000s) is kinda like the animation of these Land Before Time sequels (mainly those of the post-1990s), regardless of what people say about the movies themselves, there is no denying that the 2D visuals, despite most of them being on a lower budget because they’re direct to video (or sometimes theatrically released like Peter Pan 2), there is no denying that the animators (mostly) made the best out of a gorgeous concept. I mean, then again, The Secret of NIMH and Captain Underpants are movies that were on a low budget and their animation is also amazing!

Honestly, I agree- while I haven’t yet seen 101 Dalmatians 2 (for example), watching the footage of it throughout the video, I definitely thought the art style was a bit of a downgrade. I’m still interested in the movie, I’m definitely willing to give it a chance, but one thing I really love about the original is the hand-drawn charm to it. It feels so organic and unique, and I haven’t seen anything like it anywhere else. I think in chasing what can be done to say you did it, you can lose what made what you were already able to do special- like rough but warm visuals to sleeker ones with a slightly more generic art style, or hand-drawn wonders to 3D movies solely because it’s what’s most popular and studios (cough, Disney) can’t shill out some of their endless money to make room for artistic integrity/effort/the crew getting to make something GOOD
@HydraSpectre1138
@HydraSpectre1138 Год назад
Most of these Disney sequels have animation that is too cheap and bad for cinemas, but is clearly too good and expensive for TV series standards at the time. They may have been following the Japanese philosophy of direct-to-video, where it’s less “too bad for theatres” and more “too good for television” Making a TV series with animation of this quality would make it too expensive and risky until the advent of streaming. Belle’s Magical World is an exception, that film is awful even for TV standards. Atlantis II is mediocre for TV standards at the time. Hunchback II is actually decently animated for TV series standards in 2000. Cinderella II was clearly too expensive to be a TV series. Cinderella III is good even for theatrical standards, and it is honestly top-tier for direct-to-video standards, let alone TV series standards. The animation in Mulan II is actually great for TV standards, even if it would be mediocre for cinema standards.

It may just be the parental issues in me talking, but I genuinely like Bambi II. It covered the grief of losing a loved one, the difficulties of trying to be a single parent and doing what's best for your child, while also giving the characters more depth and, well, *character.* Besides, there's something charming about a rugged leader learning to be a father. Lion King 2 had that as well, but little me was more familiar with the forest setting.

As a much-belated note, there is SORTA a sequel to Hunchback that not only did it justice but improved on it: the broadway musical. Same original musical team but with more freedom to take the story closer to the book which made it darker, more complex, and with a distinctly un-Disnified ending. Highly, HIGHLY recommend if you have access to it. There is one kinda poor quality recording of the whole show on RU-vid, but even just listening through the soundtrack is glorious if you're already familiar with the plot. It's a fairly perfect halfway point between the kid gloves happy ending treatment the Disney movie got and the slightly overdramatic unnecessary plot twists of the original book (because does it really matter if Esmeralda and Quasimodo were switched at birth, like really?) and the couple of added and altered songs are straight up improvements.

*Fun fact:* there was supposed to be 3D spin-off film of Snow White, centering around how all the dwarves met, but it was later on cancelled because the executive demanded for the movie to open with a very dark origin story for Dopey to explain why he doesn't talk in the original movie

It was implied in the origina, that Ursula used to have some high position in Atlantica until she did some f*ed up shit and got herself kicked out. They had a perfect opportunity to dig into that in the midquel, it could’ve been so cool, but nooooo of course they did singing Footloose instead 🙄

fun fact about Aladdin: you nailed it, both of its sequels really were never intended to be anything more than bookends to the TV show. their success encouraged disney to make sequels because money. also Lion King 2 is basically just a movie version of an expansion pack to a videogame, and the only bad part was the random budget cut/censorship on the villains death at the end which made the pacing go lopsided for a second.

I remember watching Lion King 1 1/2 so much as a kid I broke the DVD (like not physically, the disc just stopped working and everything glitched out when I played it) and I became pretty obsessed with Meerkats after that, they just seemed like one of the most interesting animals on the planet to me. Cinderella 3 was better than it should have been honestly, and I really enjoy the idea that Anastasia wasn't evil to be evil, but because of her upbringing. It felt a lot more real and made her redemption enjoyable. Scamps Adventure was also one of my favorites as a kid, but it probably helped that my nickname growing up was "Angel" so I identified with the character more because of it. Overall, I could probably live without the rest of these movies, but those 3 do mean a lot to my childhood in particular, and might actually mean more to me than their original counterparts.

Cinderella 3 was actually an adaptation of a Disney World Stage Show performed in front of Cinderella Castle. Despite this, the film writers would've had to have made changes and come up with new ideas to better fit the Silver Screen medium. Thought that'd be an interesting factoid to share.

Fun fact about the little mermaid sequel. I worked in Epcot, in the Akershus festning resturant, and we were told to NEVER bring that sequel up around guests. Ever. XD We could only acknowledge it if the guests brought it up first, and I dont remember but we were given some spiel about what to answer to kind of handwave away why Melody wouldnt be with her mother at the restaurant with the other princesses. Personally, I love the idea of the princesses all meeting and doting on Melody. Is Ariel the only princess to ever have gotten a child, who we see on screen? Aside from Nala I mean. XD

Tell me you haven't read Bambi, without telling me you haven't read Bambi: "I'm okay with the inclusion of the jerk deer." But seriously, Bambi 2 very slightly helps make the story closer to the original story is it based off of (the original story is hella dark). The original source of Bambi has a lot more scenes/chapters of The Great Prince teaching Bambi how to survive as a deer than the original movie does. They softened The Great Prince just enough in Bambi 2 to make it complying with the first Bambi movie. Also, they actually bothered to explain Ronno's aggression to Bambi which is explored for 2 chapters in the original book.

So as most people know the Lion King was influenced by Shakespeare's Hamlet, and a lot of people say that Lion King 2 was influenced by Romeo and juliet. If we follow that, some people have argued that Lion King 1 1/2 was influenced by the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, an absurdist / satirical play from the 1960s showing the events of Hamlet but from the comic reliefs perspective.

Interesting thing about Organ Tim Curry plan in BEC, if his plan go as it is, this would eventually lead to the death of everyone except beast in the castle. The commentary in the first movie confirmed when the last petal falls beast would devolve into a literal beast and all the servants (Including Forte) would die as they turn into real objects. Imagine Beast is sitting on his chair next to the fire, Belle is gone, servants all rusted upset knowing it coming to an end and the only thing heard throughout the halls is Fortes music. Right as the last petal the music stops. Nothing but quiet in the halls when suddenly a monstrous roar echo through the halls.

I’m a big brother bear fan, and the reason I don’t like the sequel is that it basically throws aside the “family bonds” thing of the first film, and doesn’t do good with the “falling in love” as Nina is constantly telling Kenai he’s screwing up and that she doesn’t want to be there. That’s not showing love at all.
