I was sooooo obsess with Gregg Jefferies in 1989 … I was chasing all of his 88-89 RC cards… this was when baseball cards were the most important thing in my life!! Great memories!

Your not alone my friend, I remember cutting grass all weekend to get enough money to buy packs of 89 Topps in hopes of getting the topps Jefferies card, A shame about him, There is a bunch of guys that dude get mentioned on here, Todd Zeile? Hos 1990 cards were so expensive, I how bout Danny Tartabull? Kevin Mitchell? I can name a 100 more, Wally Joyner, Walt Weiss, Dwight Smith, Tom Nevers, He did mention most of the biggest card busts bur come on, mosr people haven't ever heard of Mark Prior, and to pick on Oscar Tavares when he died after he made it to tne Major League after 6 long years in minors? Pretty shitty in my opinion, He could have used Ruben Sierra or Will Clark rookie cards, The 87 Fleer Will Clark was worth $40 and people said that he was the next Mickey Mantle, that guy couldn't tue Mantles shoes

I'm in my 40's.There are 3 huge flops.Kevin Mass was huge after his amazing first half of his 1st season..Wally Joyner in 86 was another.Joyner even got voted to start the Allstar game that year..But NOTHING tops Gregg Jefferies.Former 2 time minor league mvp. When his rookie came out its was booked at $5.00 which was huge back in 88 considering most packs were still under a buck..

Back in '92, my 14 year old brother bought a factory gold set for $450 from a card shop. When we got home, #793 was not in there! We called the shop and the scumbag dealer said they were random inserts...it was obvious the set had been opened by them and resealed. We wrote a letter to Topps, and they not only sent the #793, but actually sent another ENTIRE factory sealed set!!!!

I hear you on the Maas versus Judge comparison, but Maas faded quickly if you look at his numbers. Judge put together an entire year of greatness so i think it is sort of an unfair comparison. We will see this year though!

SilverJackify Judge has only improved. If he had not improved from that fist 80 ABs with 40Ks he would be up there. But I think he’s a hard worker and wants to win. Maas bust counterpart has to be Shane Spencer. And lest we forget Greg Bird. How will his career play out?

Great video. Just a note about Todd Van Popel, though, in case you forgot. Van Popel was the consensus #1 pick in 1990 but said he would play college ball if the Braves chose him at number 1. He, also, was demanding a major league contract which drove off many other teams. That is why he dropped to #14 to the powerhouse Oakland A's. The Braves, of course, settled for a young hard hitting high school prospect named Chipper Jones and the rest - as they say - is history.

I have random Beckett's with Chipper on the cover. Pulled out the June 98 issue, and the #2 hot card that month was 94 Topps Traded Ben Grieve, $40. Just a regular rookie card, not auto no chrome. I would have definitely had this guy on the list.

Bunch of these players from the 80's were hyped up by sports illustrated. It's the Tony Mandarich effect.

The Ben McDonald error card, omg. I remember buying upper deck packs just to get that one card!

i haven't paid attention to card collecting since 2000 or so, but over the past few years i have been getting the thrill from buying rack packs and the such off Ebay or amazon just to get the thrill.

holy crap I bought that topps gold set to get the Brien taylor auto card and then shortly after he messed up his arm/shoulder. spent a lot of money quit collecting sports cards 2 years later. but lucily I was having fun with a new card game that was out in 93 and was everywhere by 94/95.

This whole era of cards were one 1 giant bust..over saturation and everybody kept them stored away thinking they would sell them down the road and put their kids through college.. I remember Canseco rookie going for like $100 , now its a dollar..
