There are actually a few reasons for why there are so many bikes in Denmark and especially in the cities in Denmark. All major cities in Denmark were basically founded back in the medieval ages or earlier. The road network in the old part of these cities were never adapted really to modern traffic so trying to use your car going there on a daily basis will only result in raising your blood pressure due to getting stuck in traffic jams. While bikes may be used in many countries as a means of working out, in Denmark, the bike is mostly used as a means of transportation. This will especially be abundantly clear in Copenhagen. You stayed next to City Hall Square in Copenhagen. Exactly where you stayed would have been just on the other side of the moat that once surrounded Copenhagen up to mid 1850s. Copenhagen was a fortified city up to the mid 1850s. The lakes next to the National Art Museum, Botanic Garden, H.C. Ørsted Park and Tivoli Gardens are remnants of the moat that once surrounded Copenhagen. Copenhagen is a pretty historic place. The age of most of the buildings in Copenhagen is actually much newer than in other Danish cities such as Odense and Århus. Most buildings in the medieval part of Copenhagen are from 1728 upwards. Parts of Copenhagen burned down in 1728, 1795 and 1807 (the last time due to being bombed by the British Navy).
