Top 10 Commodore 64 Games (2000-2010) 

Even though the 2000s were probably the lowest period in the c64 retro scene... that soon started to turn around in the 2010s and now today the scene is in full swing again! 😊

I also loved the conversion of the Vectrex game Fortress of Narzod which also came out around the same time as Spike

I was writing about these sorts of developments in a printed magazine back then. Firstly, Micro Mart (2002 - 2015) and then for a short while Retro Gamer.

Some gems there for sure. Didn't know about 'BOFH', it looks great. Will definitely pick it up and give it a try. 'Newcomer' seems amazing. Can't see it available on Protovision's site and 'Ultimate Newcomer' seems to be at the 'In Development' stage since 2013. Seems like it'd be a good contender for today's larger cartridges vs multiple disks.

BOFH is almost certainly inspired by the 1989-1991 Die hard games. The original was released on DOS in 1989 and was an EGA semi-3D game which was followed by the C64 version in 1990 which looked more like the older 1st gen Sierra AGI engine games. In 1991 NES version was released and it again changed the perspective to an overhead one and overall BOFH looks very similar to that one in both graphics and gameplay.

I think most of us were out of the scene when these games came out. Great deal of variety in all of those games and something for everyone to dive into. Good news for us they're getting better year by year and with the Eye of the beholder C64 version it just went on to show the machine still has more horse power to tap into. Great video as always👍

Nice top 10 list Brendan, enjoyed this very much. Knights n Grail would be my top game of this era. I never was able to get on with Newcomer - just wasn't able to progress very far in the game and the disk swapping is a bit of a chore. I think I am going to need to get some hints off you and give it another try!

Great list. I had stayed with the C64 and got a lot of these on their original release. I'd probably add Zoo Mania, Berzerk Redux, and Kikstart C16 as some of my personal favourites from that decade. That's when RGCD started making their excellent cartridge titles too.

Very good list, didn't know half of the games. That Wanted western game looked cool and fun! I thought Metal Dust would show up in the list, I think it's from that period? It however uses the superCPU, so you could argue it's disqualified... 😄

Some nice classics.

We keep waiting for Ultimate Newcomer, which has promised NTSC support, among other things. EasyFlash support, etc.

Uh, i bought Knights n Grails digitally as it came out.. until today i didnt manage to complete it.. shocked a bit about the fact, that it is allready so old🙈 Newcomer should become a easy to handle cart version 🙏🏻

I'm gonna keep it all the way real with you, B. Although I got "roped in" to this C64 nostalgia thing, if I had to choose between the C64 library and the Sega Game Gear... I'd choose the G.G. (for the rest of my life) over the C64 (and never play a C64 title again!) even though the G.G. library is so limited (and has nearly zero homebrew). The C64 is fascinating in terms of what it can and can't do, with music that has aged so much better than the gameplay, but it limps along in exactly the areas all other 8 bit consoles can soar through. The moment to moment gameplay (and "physics") just remain so weak, compared to less powerful systems of the same era (the Famicom, SMS, GG, etc.).

I had no idea they were still making games from that time period.

Not that I would actually mind it being a top100, but I'm really glad this isn't a top100, because I'd be sitting and watching all of it. ^_^ ... oh, and sorry for giving the 65th Like. :-)

Well, to be fair, the first decade of the 2000 was, really, the era of the Vectrex rather than the C64...

I'm trying to find a commodore 64 game Don't remember the name of it It had a guy with a red balloon in it I remember that and I remember there was a couple caves in the game and it said AC/BC on the caves It was kind of like a RPG game It was really fun Love that game I just wish I remember the name of it If anyone knows the name of this game please respond I would really appreciate it

BOFH is my favourite. It's nice to have a C64 game where one fights against ANTIFA and BLM on their way to take back control of Trump towers. It reminded me a lot of one of the mini games in Raid over Moscow. Always felt good to fight the commies on the commie.
