@@TheAnnoyingBoss They were getting rid of their debt. That's why nations print obscene amounts of money - to devalue their debts. It may hurt the common citizen but it more or less creates free money for the national bank. Plus, unlike most nations, Israeli bank accounts were indexed to CPI. If you deposited 1 sheckel and inflation went up 100% then your balance would show 2 sheckels. Inflation didn't really bother them until it started approaching four digits.

Ranking Charts, very good charts as of 10 months ago - does that place us at October of 2021? Would it be possible to update this inflation chart, even if only for the US of A through August of 2022? I have heard and seen the data for most of these key countries you list through at least July of 2022. This would be most helpful to understand how we are doing as a nation. China has been minus 2.5% inflation; other European countries at plus 2 to 4 to 6% inflation while the USA has been at 8.5% inflation since maybe May or June of 2022? Thank you for your consideration!

At least credit and debit cards exist today so you can just arbitrarily increase numbers in the accounts the cards are attached to. During the Weimar Republic it was said people couldn't find wheelbarrows big enough to take enough cash with them to buy a single loaf of bread, and the prices would be higher in the afternoon than they were in the morning.

Of note: Argentina seems to be missing from the 1980s-era rankings. Their already high inflation rate (averaging 120% a year in the '70s - compared to 8% in the U.S.) shot up after the dictatorship's foreign debt binge collapsed in '81. The annual rates (Dec. to Dec.) in the '80s and early '90s were: 1980......88% 1981....131% 1982....210% 1983....434% 1984....688% 1985....385% 1986......82% 1987....175% 1988....388% 1989..4924% 1990..1344% 1991......84% 1992......18% Inflation then dropped to single digits (or slightly negative) from '93 through '01 - but then averaged 25% (adjusted) from '01 to '21. This year, it's expected to reach 60%. Thanks for compiling and sharing all these graphs, RankingCharts. Great teaching tools!

You can devalue the currency, eliminate the currency altogether and replace it with something else, or peg it's official value to another currency. The latter almost never works as black markets are the result and faith in the official rate is non-existent. None of the above will work if rampant spending, nepotism, favoritism or cronyism is the problem. Venezuela has these in abundance. If the outlook by business is that their capital, facilities and assets are considered "safe" from seizure or, as in the case of Venezuela, nationalization, then prosperity and wealth creation will be the result. Politically targeting your industrial and business sector is not good for business or freedom. Chavez and Venezuela are a example of this. That level of destruction is self imposed and to say otherwise while in Venezuela is dangerous. Wealth and opportunity are directly related to freedoms, security and choice.

For a good idea of where the Venezuelan dollar (Bolívar), after redonimination make it so 10^14 old dollars became worth 1 current dollar, it is still worth $0.0000002844USD. This means 1,000,000 of their currency is rough $284USD after the denomination change. The old denomination would be worth about $0.00000284 per million or 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (10 sextillion, or ten million sets of 100 trillion) per USD.

It means their currency is worth basically nothing and they can't afford necessities. Same thing happened in Germany where 1 million Marks could only buy a loaf a bread and they'd need to use wheelbarrows to carry it.

Their own currency is basically worthless. That means, people will try and get their hands on foreign currency (probavly dollars) if they can or not use money at all. This is when things like gold, cigarettes, etc. become the new defacto currency. Or they transition to barter, such as a sack of potatoes for a sack of coal, etc. Definitely not a state you want your country to be in.

Most historical inflation has nothing to do with USA. Tons of countries actually don't have Venezuela level inflation specifically because of USA 😂😂
