I can't believe China always ranked top 10 during this 128 years. We were so desparately poor for the most part of this period. Even today our fight against poverty is not over.
a side note, the reason brazil showed up in the beginning was due to the paraguayan war, where uruguay, argentine and brazil joined together against the republic of paraguay my homecountry! 3 vs 1!! and they only won bc brazil poured its entire treasury into the war
US never fell below 7th place. Glad to know we were always heavy spenders for the military even over a hundred years ago. Also, kind of funny that during both world wars the US outspend everybody once it joined. One would think the countries being invaded or invading would allocate more to the war effort but then the US just comes and throws buckets of money at the war after joining.
As a foreigner I see many problems in the way US built some of its social structures, such as healthcare(I wouldn’t go into details since I’m not American and don’t feel like I should complain about a country different than my own) However, it’s undeniably its huge economic success, as a model. All of that without having to expand a meter of its territory since the 19th century. People say it’s because of its economic and military supremacy, but the world had greater powers before, such as Portugal, Rome and England. How are they doing now?
It's important to know that a lot of 'military expenses' of countries like Japan, South Korea and some European countries, is just money sent to the US military industrial complex.
It’s crazy that in 1943 Australian and New Zealand were the 7th and 9th biggest spending countries militarily. They had tiny populations (7 million and 1.6 million respectively) a fraction of European powers with populations in the tens of millions, let alone the US at 140 million. The effort they made, New Zealand especially, was way out of proportion to their size
