My dad had severe 3rd degree burns on his arms and hands, from the elbows down. They said it would be too painful to scrape and cut the tissue out, so they cleaned off the cooking oils, which hurt a lot, and used sterile maggots to remove the dead flesh gently. As a result, he was able to have both arms saved and the nerves grew back. The Egyptians used maggots in the same sort of methods 3 thousand years ago.

Trepanation is still used today. In the case of a TBI (traumatic Brain Injury) the brain often times will swell. If this becomes dangerous, a 'bore hole' will be drilled into the skull thus elevating the pressure around the brain and allowing it to heal properly. Depending on the size of the bore hole, they are usually left to close on their own.

Amazingly blood draining is beneficial. For the body has 10 pints of blood that it is constantly recycling so if a person was to donate 1 pint of blood their body would have to remake that pint at the same time recycling the rest as usual which strengthens the overall blood circulation. Secondly doctors do use leeches today when they perform surgeries on areas of the body that swelling could cause severe complications example neck surgery for when the leeches remove the excess blood from the neck when swelling occurs it will not nearly be as problematic.

"I would rather have sciatica. Be sore all the time." It's not a soreness with sciatica. It's a bone deep pain that makes you tired from the physical exertion of even just sitting down. It wears your mental strength down that you are also tired from that. It's a constant stabbing pain that feels like it's burning when you try and rest, even if you're leaning against something. If you've ever run so much that your legs strain and ache, you're not even on the scale of bare minimum pain. If you've ever been so sick that your whole body can't move, even if just to lift your head to drink something, you are only just scraping the surface of the weariness and fatigue your body goes thru. Get a hot needle and start stabbing because it lasts all day. It keeps you awake at night. Your body is so tired, so done, that the mere act of relaxing is also painful, and at times even more so than the pitiful attempts to walk you endured for the simple luxury of going to the toilet. You don't fall asleep. You pass out from the shear mental fortitude of trying to fall asleep. I say trying because even tho you're exhausted both mentally and physically, you can't comfortably fall asleep. There is no comfort. And that pain you've been feeling all day. That burning of not just the muscle but the bone itself. Is so far only at your hip. The rest of your leg from the outside of your hip, twisting down your leg to the inside of your knee and all the way down to your ankle, feels like you're being jabbed with a thin, blunt, object, that never quite relieves pressure as it prods you over and over and over and over again. So you seek refuge. An ice pack, ibuprofen, a warm shower maybe. All extremely temporary. So you talk to your Dr. Maybe get a Rx for hydrocodone. Only you find out that even it doesn't work. If drinking urine really did give relief, from my personal experiences, I would do it.

@@tomcarey8332 I'm sorry but that's quack science if a "doctor" or anyone else makes those claims based on not having proven "physicial addictive" qualities. But, the proof of it being easily addictive is when it had it's own US epidemic that surged between 1984-1990 and again in the UK during 2002, prominent people losing everything for 1000s of dollars a day habits, and the rewiring to the point it becomes more important than your health, life, and others. If anyone believes those claims it's safe to say, "This is your brain on drugs!" @ about minute 14, when discussing ice baths- there's a mention of a tonic containing milk and liverwort- which gets referred to as "....eww, liver milk....." and i just wanted to clarify that liverwort is a plant, kinda similar to/related in a way, to the moss family ;) so no super gross bloody liver milk er anything- still not exactly a very appealing choice for cocktails though, huh? Best wishes

Hey ant heads it's very innovative and really very effective and for people who didn't have stiches it was a vital to close those wounds!! They show this in the movie apocalypto. It's a very good movie and I think it's a shame more people have not seen it.

There used to be an amusement park ride called the roto room. It was circular and you would stand against the wall then it would spin until you stuck to the wall and the floor would drop as you stuck there. It was actually pretty horrible but we kids did it anyway lol. The spin Dr remedy reminded me.

The majority of folk who had the procedure either got worse and even never recovered from the procedure itself. There were rumors that the American who adopted it from the original guy who did it was actually a sadistic, evil POS. You’ll have to google that tho as I’m not 100% on it. But it seems legit when you actually think about what the procedure actually was.....

I got bit by one of these ants when I was a child. Bruh. It left it's head in and you don't even want to know about the pain. My nanny literally had to tweeze it out. I still don't like the great outdoors to this day. Give me a city any time.

@@zazzifizzle Yup. And stiches without anesthetic hurt too. We're talking about using them as stiches. How hard it is to remove them, confirms that they would make effective stitches. That's my point.

Trepanation, or whatever its modern counterpart is called, saved my friend's husband's life. He had severe bleeding on the brain after an accident at work, and if they hadn't drilled a hole into his skull to relieve that pressure and to let the excess blood drain out, as well as to stop the bleeding through that hole, he wouldn't be here today. He does have slight mental impairment due to that injury, but he's doing pretty well considering what he went through, thankfully. Lobotomies always freak me out. Anything in or near the eye, or going up through the nose into the skull - ugh!! No, thank-you!! Kellogg was a follower of the man who originally came up with Graham Crackers, which weren't the yummy treat they are today. They both thought that eating bland food and being vegetarians would keep people from a certain kind of self indulgence. This is a very basic thing of their beliefs, and of course there's a lot more to it than that.

They do prescribe it still… Just in pill form so no one thinks anything of it. It’s called fentanyl, Percocet, oxycodone, hydrocodone, dilaudid, etc. You could even take a large amount of Imodium, which is OTC.
@BLUE_OCTOBER-TRIX
@BLUE_OCTOBER-TRIX Год назад
Yes, those are opioids as well, but they are not the same as heroin although some countries still do prescribe heroin as a pain medicine the US does not, and Imodium does not cross the blood brain barrier. It will help in the intestinal track, but will not cause euphoria.

Bloodletting as a therapy (fun fact- it's the root behind the word "phlebotomy") is STILL used today for certain diseases, including polycythemia and hemochromatosis.
@Frankie5Angels150

Actually, phlebotomy literally means “blood-letting”, not a root behind it.
@MamaKat92

"via Old French from late Latin phlebotomia from Greek, from phleps, phleb- ‘vein’ + -tomia ‘cutting’." No. It is the "root" not the direct translation.

I learned somewhat about Trepidation from a manga called Homunculus. The MANGA, not the butchered version on Netflix. And wow was it a psychological trip and mind break. But it was pretty good and it held alot of serious topics/ discussions, and mature themes to think about. At least that what I got from it.
