The thing with gimli asking for a single strand of galadriels hair and being granted 3 has a way deeper meaning. Back in the first age faenor (the elf who crafted the silmarils) asked lady galadriel for a strand of her hair three times. And three times she would deny her cousins request. Because she saw the dark and "greed" in him. Now, thousand yeras later, humble gimli refuses to ask for any gift. When pushed he asks for just 1 strand of her hair. So she gives him three. As he proved to be a good and humble person, he gets what faenor was denied.

When the movie was filmed, a call went out across NZ for every horse and owner to be extras in the scene of the Charge of the Rohirrim. Hundreds came, and their numbers were digitally multiplied to appear as thousands on screen. But what was really interesting was the charge from the perspective of the extras who portrayed the Orcs. They said that even a few hundred horses charging at them was terrifying, and made the ground shake. They could not imagine what thousands would do, or being in their path.

Book Trivia: Saruman's "death" here was not "final" as the movie depicts; but being Maiar & not completely bound to his "physical wizard form" (a practice "perfected" by Sauron himself) it took nearly 42 years AFTER the Fall of Sauron for Saruman to take his former "physical form" again...& with Grima Worm tongue (who also was NOT killed at Isengard) attempted to overtake The Shire...ultimately being overthrown & ultimately killed by NONE OTHER than Bilbo's menacing, kiniving family member; Lobelia Sackville-Baggins & the Hobbits of The Shire...resulting in her "redemption arc" within the whole story. While I do enjoy the Witch King being introduced as a force to be reconed with, Gandalf is shown as weaker, which is totally out of character for him. Gandalf and he other Wizards are all Maiar (lesser angels) and are all the same rank as Sauron (though less powerful). Gandalf the Grey fought and later defeated the Balrog, who used to be Morgoth's servant, the same as Sauron (both Sauron and the Balrogs were lesser angels, while Morgoth was the first Dark Lord and the most powerful of the greater angels. After Gandalf's physical body was destroyed he was reincarnated as Gandalf the White, with most of his original power restored. Right after Sauron he is the second most powerful being in Middle Earth. The Witch-King, even with Sauron powering him up, would be NO MATCH for Gandalf the White.

Yep, agreed...I was disappointed with this approach taken by PJ in regards to the power difference between Gandalf The White and The Witch King...Gandalf The White would totally curb-stomp The Witch King...I was also disappointed they didn't include the Warg attack at the Fellowship's night camp in Hollin, this was a major missed opportuntiy to include an incredible action scene...

Exactly, I'm glad you mentioned that. I feel like that other writer, I forgot her name, probably added this part in the movies where the witch king DESTROYS GANDALF'S STAFF???, to try to make him look powerful.... Except it's completely stupid and unexplained and really doesn't fit with the coolness of the story. She's thinking of it like a magic harry potter story, instead of like the believable, almost historical, mythical world that Tolkien revealed to us.
@UXSpecialist
@UXSpecialist 2 года назад
@@jonathanwilliams1974 Exactly, Gandalf would have been like a great white flame, and a terrible presence to the Witch King. The fight may have gone thus: Gandalf would have spoken to him perhaps in his own tongue. He would have told him to go and tell his master to call off the attack, that he was outmatched now, and to sink back into the shadows from whence he came... The Witch King, in his anger, and feeling emboldened by his master's influence over him, would have tried to attack Gandalf with all of his darkened rage, holding his dark sword aloft, embued with the energies of his dark master, but Gandalf would have revealed the light of the Maiar, a greater power than the Witch King had ever before beheld. The Witch King would have begun to fear at the overwhelming site of this new Gandalf, Bearer of this Greatest Light, and his boldness would become confusion... He indeed would have fled, just like he did in the book, but had he been foolish enough to try to attack Gandalf the White, he would have melted in the sheer pain and agony of this power, his blade falling to the ground, his eyes burning with the heat and light of this Unbearable foe. His very essence would have been weakened by this presence and his only thought would be to flee and cower into the darkness. Yet, if he had continued on, the very presence of this Gandalf would have "burned" him and caused his weakened form to evaporate into the nothingness, that same nothingness that awaited him and his master, which Gandalf commanded him to return to in the books. So we see, Gandalf was the more powerful of the two, though the Witch King did not know it yet..........

In the same scene, it's explained *how* he's able to be that old yet look so young: He's a descendant of the Dunedain, who were especially long-lived men. iirc they tended to live to around 200 years old, so he *is* a relatively "young man", from a Dunedain perspective.

But that would've looked kind of weird if this was the same kind of creature that participated in the Fall of Gondolin. There was not only one Balrog there, but a whole bunch of them, and they had a leader as well. And the elves of Gondolin rode out and faced them head on, on the battlefield. Furthermore, I can understand that Peter wanted to portray the Balrog as fearsome and powerful, so yeah - logically - big, dark and strong would be a go to, if it wasn't for the wonderful portrayal of Saruman. He wasn't big, didn't have wings, but damn was he fearsome and powerful! Still, if we're to actually critizice Peter Jackson for this, he makes the same mistake over and over again in most of the dark encounters (except for the black riders), so I rather choose to think that this is a vision of fear that struck the fellowship. And spreading fear was, after all, the true power of the Balrog?

one of the great bits of these movies I think is often left unremarked-upon... When Gandalf confronts the Witch King and even has his staff shattered... Look at what Shadowfax does. He doesn't back down, he isn't cowered back by the Witch King and the fell beast... Look at the scene, Shadowfax is ready to throw down and fight them while Gandalf and the hobbit are staggerd back and trying to recover their strength. Shadowfax isn't just a fast steed, he's the greatest of the warhorses, even braver and tougher than Gandalf, who rides him into battle. This is some cool shit that gets both revealed and left aside by the film makers.

In the trilogy, Saruman was killed in the Shire .. by Grima Wormtongue. So that part of the movie scene is true to the books. And the murder was a result of Saruman's verbal abuse. The more Saruman's status collapsed, the more he took it out on Grima .. till Grima snapped. So the scene captures that as well.

so many people hold this view but Tolkien also left it ambiguous in the book. He clearly did this for a reason. Gandalf is a Maia but he's still not in his spiritual form, as you probably know his powers are more limited while in Middle Earth. The Witch-king has also been buffed by Sauron, a Maia greater than Gandalf. In the passage it's abundantly clear that the Witch-king is confident he can best Gandalf, and Gandalf is just as confident he can stop the Witch-king. Tolkien teased us but also sewed the seed of doubt in our minds. Also the prophecy favoured the Witch-king in the particular duel. I'd say the lack of backstory to Denethor and the removal of Scouring are both far more anti Tolkien. Although all of these changes weren't necessary bad ones for a movie adaptation.

There's also nothing to suggest Balrogs whipped dragons but in certain drafts of the Fall of Gondolin it's suggested then rode them but I believe ultimately Tolkien dispelled the idea and also decided there were fewer Balrogs. Gandalf the Grey also fought off all of the nine...under a different context and situation. Tolkien still doesn't make it obvious that Gandalf would have won and that's right there in the body of the text.

Aragon was half Numenorian. The Numenorian were the first men who knew the valor. The kings of men had Numenorian bloodlines and their blood lines ended when Sauron gave them their rings of power. They don't live as long as elves but will live hundreds of years. The Mouth of Sauron was once a Numenorian prince whose name has been lost. He was Sauron's emissary from the first war. He would ride up to the enemy army and demand they join or die. The books say he went east and was able to recruit the savage men you see with the oliphants and the ships.

The Silmarillion tells that tale very well. I actually thought Aragorn was around 200 years old at this stage of the film, but yea, he was the last of his kind and cursed to lose their immortality for falling for Saurons trickery. Also the same event that caused the elves to remove their longevity was also how Sauron died the physical death. The original battle in that book exceeds those of LOTR. When dragons and balrogs were plenty.

The most important scene was Boromir’s. We really didn’t know TOO much about him in movie #1, and we grew to mostly dislike him when he “fights” with Frodo before coming to his senses. As a first-time viewer, we’re not sure where Gondor is & why the Ring would be important to Boromir. Honestly, he’s just another guy who could be easily corrupted. Actually seeing what he and his people are doing to keep everyone safe helps put everything into perspective, so I’m not sure why it was cut. It would have also helped them with Faramir, who we all agree was not treated well in movie #2.

Númenórean's don't have elf blood, they were men who lived a very long time and were in all ways (intelligence, strength, courage, ect.) stronger than normal men. They were made that way as a reward for helping to defeat Morgath at the end of the first age of the world. They were also given the great island of Númenór in the sea west of Middle Earth but also had colonies on the main continent.
