Yes the Zumwalt didn't live up to expectations but it is still a very capable platform and the stealth capability can come in handy.

They're respectively an aircraft carrier and a helicopter carrier. They're not really destroyers in the traditional sense as they have no offensive gun and their missiles are limited to self-defense missiles only.

Still the same platform though, even the Flight 3 now, just changes on radar, etc

Zumwalt shouldn't even be on the list, it lacks torpedos, powerful anti-ship missiles; a long-range volume search radar; and lacks an impressive amount of VLS cells.

@Austin Carr no, Zumwalt is just not designed for today’s world. It was meant for costal engagements assuming that the US navy will continue to be unchallenged. No amount of accessories can correct the flaw (or error in judgement) in its design.

No, destroyers and cruisers have different roles. We don't call modern fighter jets 'heavy fighters' now, do we? (heavy fighters were typically 2 engined aircraft with forward mounted guns, they were also known as 'bomber hunters'. An aircraft example would be the german Bf-110)

when torpedoes were first invented the biggest ships could be sunk by small boats carrying torpedoes. this is when a ship the size of torpedo boats but armed with guns came into service. their job was to destroy torpedo boats and protect big ships. they were called torpedo boat destroyers then shortened to destroyers

Burke Flight IIA and Burke Flight III are undoubtedly the top. For one It has the most powerful AN/SPY-6 radar that can be fitted on a ship. Even the previous AN/SPY-1D(V) is comparable if not a bit better than Type 346A. China's Type 055 destroyer with its Type 346B radar is roughly the same to UK's Type 45 destroyer's SAMPSON and S1850M/SMART-L radar in terms of detection range. Also Zumwalt's RCS can only be reduced to a small fishing boat. Other destroyers will certainly have a bigger RCS no doubt. Plus even if ships are as stealthy like 5th gen planes or a bumble bee, it's useless anyway as Tomahawk is also an anti-radiation missile that can detect and lock-on on enemy ships' radar emissions. Third, while Burke has fewer VLS cells, the missiles that they carry are dual/triple purpose. Take for example Tomahawk can target both land and sea targets at long range. It also carries SM-6 for both ballistic interception and air defense, but can also target land and sea at medium range. This means Burke can have anti-ship/land attack missile for each of its 96 VLS while still retaining air defense and BMD capabilities. The same can't be said for other destroyers with missiles built for only one purpose. Type 055 has CJ-10 for long range land attack, YJ-18 for medium range anti-ship, and YJ-21 for long range anti-ship. Sejong the Great have Hyunmoo III for long range land attack but it don't have medium-long range anti-ship missile. Japanese destroyers on the other hand don't carry land attack cruise missiles but Maya has a medium-long range anti-ship missile with its Type 17. But Sejong, Maya, and Atago also use Mk 41 VLS, so they could also get the same multi-purpose Tomahawk and/or SM-6.
