This. I would go a step further and say that if you love Happy Gilmore there's a good chance that you hate Jack & Jill and that you don't even have to consider yourself a Sandler fan to think one was a pretty good movie and the other was not.
Vinicius De Moraes He doesn't need the Oscars, why should he care what a bunch of boring old people think of him. As long as he keeps making films, then that's great for him!
Watchmojo always talks about Adam Sandler's performance in Punch Drunk Love, but they don't even mention his incredible performance in Reign Over Me. For shame.
Yes!!! That role was the one that shocked me big time. I haven't seen Punch drunk love but his performance in reign over me was really one of the most impressive and emotional I've seen
Williams was an absolute titan of cinema. He perfected the comedy formula with his inimitable style and proved to the world he could be just as incredible in a drama, whether he's the good guy or bad. There will never be another like him. I'm just happy that he left us with a lifetime of greatness, we can appreciate forever.
It's no surprise that comedic actors make for great dramatic actors. Making people laugh on a consistent basis is one of the hardest things an actor can do, so if you can do that, there shouldn't be anything you can't do as an actor.
Hotel Transylvania is good for me!At least he was able to portray a character that wasn't a man-child,but instead an overprotective father, and that's my type of male character!
Honestly such a great choice for #1, it's still sad to know Robin Williams is gone, but he was both a genius in comedy and could turn in more serious roles like in Good Will Hunting and Dead Poet's Society.
Annie Burke Can't forget his more villainous roles in movies such as "One Hour Photo" and "Insomnia." He did those roles very well, and I was absolutely shocked that Robin Williams could do that so well.
"Who knew Eddie Murphy had such pipes?" Really, am I the only one who remembers him soulfully singing about how his girl likes to party all the time, party all the time, party all the time? Lol
Will Smith: Pursuit of Happiness Jim Carey: The Number 23 Adam Sandler: Reign Over Me Ben Stiller: Secret Life of Walter Mitty All amazing movies as well
Fantastic list, no argument at all. And good job of adding Stranger Than Fiction in honourable mentions; I feel like most people have forgotten about that film.
Male why do you idiots like eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind so much you guys like kiss the movies ass so much it's an Stupid useless overrated piece of s***
buciallstar OOOOOOOH MAN. I didn't even think of that and THAT was incredible when you think it was her first dramatic role and first FILM! Thanks for reminding me.
Brynjar Reynisson Ghost isn't necessarily a Comedy on it's own, but Whoopi Goldberg was still playing the comic relief still making it a comedic performance.
Anyone notice when a comedic actor takes a dramatic role, it's their best role yet, and the when dramatic actors do comedy they are hilarious. Explain this.
StudioInkblot I'd say it's equally difficult to be exceptional in a drama as in a comedy. Hence why a lot of comedians that try drama fall flat and vice-versa.
I think Good Will Hunting is, but I think what they were going for was the first notable performance where Williams was in a drama. Also if you look at their list for his top 10 performances Good Will Hunting is number 1.
***** Good Will Hunting was definitely a better performance. Way more range of emotions as well as an infinitely deeper/complex character; done perfectly by him.
bibleanddisneyfan Will Smith did Ali in 2001 and he did Enemy of the State in the 90s so he had already established himself as more than a comedic actor before the Pursuit of Happyness
okay but like eternal sunshine was such a strong role for Jim like he turned in a much stronger performance there, idc if that wasnt the one that "put him on the map" as a serious actor.
I honestly believe Robin Williams might be the greatest actor of all time. He was obviously amazing in comedies, but no comedian could do a serious role like he did. He also did creepy really well, like in One Hour Photo and Insomnia. Also, after seeing Good Will Hunting, he changed my goddamn life
Secret Life of Walter Mitty is just a fantastic film. Taking away from Ben Stillers performance, the film offers everything that a great film should offer. ADD in Ben Stillers performance as an everyman who takes hold of his chance at an adventure to find himself on the road of discovery, in order to find a business associate who is lost in the north photographing wildlife, and is LIVING the dream of freedom, was nothing short of BRILLIANCE.
When I first got around to watching King Kong and being introduced to Jack Black in a dramatic role, my family and I had been talking about he was always known to be a funny man, which he is, but then another Watchmojo video led me to the idea that he was entirely miscast as Carl Denham, which maybe everyone`s concern. Although, he SEEMED miscast, he still put on a seriously good performance, nonetherless.
That scene in Dead Poets Society when John Keating is sitting at Neil's desk and just cries is in my personal opinion the most powerful sad performance ever in the movies, you can see as if he was not even acting, it always moves me. Man with a passion who tried to pass it to younger generation, and that passion took a life of a boy. Robin Williams was truly amazing.
Nana Amuah I know I've seen it, its just majority of people knew him predominately as a comedic actor, so you would think he would be on the list, plus that was a very small role in comparison to Breaking Bad.
ROFLCOPTER195 This is a list of actors who started their career as comedy movie/TV actor. Bryan Cranston does not fall under that category. Plus he only starred in few comedy TV shows and that's about it.
I'm so so glad Will Ferrell got a mention for Stranger than Fiction. It's a very underrated movie and he perfectly fit the part. Unlike some comedic actors who venture into drama, you never see him as just a funny person while he plays the character. He was able to play an introverted and painfully ordinary everyman in the most believable way which he never comes across as in most of his comedic roles. Here's hoping to see more dramatic performances from him, although sadly there have been very few.
Precious had me in tears! I was shocked and horrified, but impressed and awed by the performances of both women! Monique has some serious acting chops!
What i hope ends up being on the list: "Good Will Hunting" - Robin Williams "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" - Jim Carrey "Punch Drunk Love" Adam Sandler "Stranger Than Fiction" - Will Ferrel
1. Robin Williams “The Fisher King” 2. Jim Carrey “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” 3. Bill Murray “Lost in Translation” 4. Peter Sellers “Being There” 5. Adam Sandler “Punch-Drunk Love” 6. Jerry Lewis “The King of Comedy” 7. Steve Carell “Foxcatcher” 8. Whoopi Goldberg “The Color Purple” 9. Jonah Hill “The Wolf of Wall Street” 10. Mo’Nique “Precious”
Nonono. There's only one kind of person in this world. People who love old Adam Sandler movies and hate new Adam Sandler movies. If you're not in this group, you don't actually exist. I'm sorry you had to find out like this.
***** Adam Sandler himself is of no import. You either love his great older flicks and hate his shitty newer ones, or you're not real. No two ways about it.
Mo'nique in Precious, her role was fucking amazing. the role made me so fucking angry at her, I hated Mo'nique (not her, but her role as the mom) so much. the movie made me cry so bad. she did an amazing job. (she also looks like my mommy :3 )
I didn't see Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love and I usually don't care for his comedies, but I actually really liked him in Spanglish. It was a comedy yes, but Sandler plays a dramatic role in it. I was really taken by surprise by his performance.
Carey's Truman Show performance always stands out for me when it comes to comedians and top dramatic roles. The scene on the boat when he was almost being drowned was just WOW!!!
The Truman show is such a quintessential Carrey performance. Should have been spotless mind in that spot. Also, Sandler in Punch drunk love should have at least taken the 2nd spot with his performance having so many overlooked aspects that he doesn't get enough credit for such as it being one of the most realistic portrayals of social anxiety and OCD ever shown on film. One of the greatest performances of this generation.
Adam Sandler's performance in Punch-drunk love was one of the most haunting, uncomfortable to watch and most of all, Real performances that is still one of the most underrated performances of all time. He should have been no lower than number 1 on this list.
First cut's the deepest for me, plus, I haven't seen most of these. When I saw Mary Tyler Moore in "Ordinary People", (the first of all of these movies I had ever seen), I was shocked by her absolutely brutal performance in that movie. It was like a completely different actress from the one I knew. No indication whatsoever that she even knew what "comedy" meant. Not a single smile-evoking line emerged from her lips or her body language in that movie. absolutely brilliant.
jonah hill in moneyball was overrated. he should have been an honorable mention swapped with will farrel in stranger than fiction. eddie murphy was superb in dreamgirls. him not winning the oscar was the academy giving him the finger.
beefyoso I always get pissed when people act like it was Eddie Murphy's fault for getting snubbed. Yeah, he made "Norbit", but that somehow invalidates his performance in Dreamgirls? Sandra Bullock accepted her Razzie for "All About Steve" the day before she won an Oscar for "The Blind Side"! It's bull.
beefyoso Dreamgirls was a terrible movie, Murphy was good in it but still... plus he lost to Alan Arkin, so there's no shame in that. I love Farrell in Stranger than Fiction, question is it really a dramatic role... it's somewhere halfway between comedy and drama (heck, the movie even tackles that). Will Forte in Nebraska and Jerry Lewis in the Kind of Comedy also delivered better performances than half of those on the list imo.
Comedy actors often make the most layered and complex characters in drama. Btw, Eddie Murphy's role in "Life" (1999) definitely deserved a mention here, it's such a serious subject masterfully disguised as comedy, a film that is criminally underrated.
I agree with Robin Williams but I thought he was best in Patch Adams. Yes it was very funny but I think it covered some great drama too. He was an amazing actor. He will be missed.
Time for another top 10 dramatic performances by comedic actors suggestions: - Marlon Wayans in Requiem for A Dream - Tyler Perry in Gone Girl - Jennifer Anniston in Cake - Owen Wilson in Midnight in Paris or Wonder - Seth Rogan in Steve Jobs - James Franco (is he considered comedic idk?) in 127 Hours - Ben Stiller in the Meyerowitz Stories - Sacha Baren Cohen in Les Miserable or Sweeney Todd - Vince Vaughn in Brawl in Cell Block 99 - Melissa McCarthy in the Nines - Whoopi Goldberg in the Color Purple - Kristen Wiig in the Martian - Chris Tucker in Silver Linings Playbook
I miss Robin Williams. Grew up watching his movies. Just cant seem to wrap my head around the fact he is no more :, '(. R.I.P i hope he has found his happiness up there....
I feel like comedy actors are so good at serious roles cause they don't do it as often, it has more impact cause instead of just being a routine and a job they have to actually dig deep into real emotion

I knew Mr. Williams would snag the top spot, a true tie between him and Jim Carrey but I think Robin's dramatic flare more often inspired tears and a love of life more than anyone else.
