Zip ties work wonders

I've been watching you for a few years now and it's safe to say you're one of the most sincere and honest mechanics out there. You're also so passionate about what you do. Tire plugs? I'll never go anywhere without them. They have saved me from being stranded several different times over the years.

First Aid Kit. I just picked up a small one for a few dollars. But you can also use duct tape on a bad cut, if you have nothing else.

good advice as always, but I'd add at No1 a hi-vis jacket, in fact in many European countries it is a legal requirement, also a good first aid kit is a must

ESCAPE TOOLS!!! One guy told me he spent 2 weeks in a hospital BC he took too long to break out of a caddy with smoking wires under the dash...power doors and windows were dead of course due to electrical fail...he finally kicked out glass, but not easily enough! He hates all power locks & windows now. Also you need a blade to cut your shoulder strap and belt, especially if there's a gas flow going on after a wreck and you can't get unstrapped. Think you left some things out Scotty....and water and food enough for being broke down, isolated, or in a major traffic holdup.

Two more things you should have: 1 quart of your car's oil 1 quart of Automatic Transmission fluid Auto transmission fluid is obviously for the transmission, but it can also be used in power steering and (in small amounts) to top off your oil. If you are dangerously low on oil, I've been told it is ok to use some ATF until you can get more oil, but its still smart to keep a quart of oil in your trunk as well. Other tools I like to have: Volt meter Basic ratchet set Small wrench set Couple of screwdrivers A funnel Paper towels or napkins Zipties Ziplock bags A phone charger I drive an old car, so some of this is a must-have for me.

I remember years ago when I drove a real beater, I had one of each fluid in the trunk. Coolant, motor oil, trans fluid, power steering, brake. I used to joke that everywhere I parked over night I would leave 5 different colored stains in the pavement.

They are at home reading, they hear "Rev up your engines" and they think "Oh no here he goes again."

Hey Scotty I would like to add something to that list. Whenever you change the drive belt on a vehicle, I find it helpful to keep your old belt in your vehicle that way if your new one were to ever break for any reason you have a spare one to put on until you get a new one to replace the one that broke.

I'd also keep a basic socket set with common English/metric sockets, and if you have a truck, keep a spare fan belt or serpentine belt with you (perhaps keep an old belt as a spare just in case the belt does break, you'll have a spare on hand and with the socket/ratchet set you can usually install them pretty easily).

I keep my fire-extinguisher in the passenger foot well so I can reach it from the drivers seat if I'm trapped in a burning car (Like after a crash)

OLD CELL PHONE!!!. Keep an old cell phone in the glove box. all cell phones can call 911 for emergencies

Gravedigging, here's some other things I carry in my trunk: 1. Kitty litter, for spills, ice, mud traction 2. Pack of shop towels, good paper towels and hand cleaner 3. Gallon of water, in addition to antifreeze 4. Case of bottled water 5. A small tool kit with basic essentials, including hammer 6. Disposable poncho, emergency foil blanket

Wouldn't help with a mechanic in the back, because if you don't have the right tools and items, you'll be stranded anyway. Another good thing to have for long trips is some oil, especially if your car is a bit old. On my car the oil return holes are clogged causing it to burn a little bit, so it needs to be topped once in a while. And should you get low on oil, you can fill it up and make it to the store to buy some more oil without blowing up the engine on the way.

Got stuck in the mud one time in remote area with my super heavy van and trailer. lesson learned, i put a tow strap in my emergency box too so any pickup can save me. Great Video as always. Love this channel !

About the fire extinguisher, make sure it's place in the coolest place inside your car. I used to have one in the trunk of my old car. Then one day, when I opened the trunk, it's white powder everywhere. My car was parked under hot summer outdoor. So my lesson learnt.

if your car actually catches fire you are going to want a dry chem extinguisher because that is the only thing that will put out a fire on a magnisium block that most newer cars have.

me and my friend where coming back from a mud hole his truck that he loves a lot backfired he had no way to put the fire out i reached in my truck and drabbed my 2L of soda and ran to his truck wile drinking the soda i gave him the soda he tries to open the hood and a big ball of fire came out and he panicked i grabbed it off the ground threw the hood open and with a sweep motion pouring it on the fire. with minor damage and a sticky mess the truck is ok (86 k5 blazer) thats why you need a fire-extinguisher

If you travel in remote regions, I have a few suggestions to add to your emergency kit. A first aid kit. Not one of those cheapie $6 kits that's basically just an assortment of bandaids and a few antiseptic wipes, either. I mean a REAL kit, one that you can use to treat a significant injury. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Incidentally, duct tape CAN be used as a bandage if there's no other alternative. A warm, heavy blanket should be kept in the car. In winter months, it might take help a while to reach you if you're broken down on the side of the road. In an emergency, it can also be used to move an injured person if need be (I know, you're not supposed to move an injured person UNLESS leaving that person where he is poses a greater risk). A charger that's compatible with your cell phone is a must. Cell phones always seem to run out of battery when they're needed most. If you have an old cell phone, even if it's not currently activated, it can be used to dial 911. Keep it in the glove box and charge it up once in a while. Forget the Mickey Mouse flashlight, go to Walmart or your local hardware store and buy a 6V lantern. An LED model, if you can find it. They throw a lot of light and the LED models will run for days before needing a fresh battery. I like to keep a small supply of MREs in the car, too. And there's also a nice sturdy survival knife in my kit, as well. If you have to abandon the car, these items can definitely come in handy.

I live in Europe, I have two 2-stroke Trabants (1950's period type of engines, but sturdy and very easy to maintain), an old Merc and a little VW. I also have in my trunk(s) all you mention here (but a bottle jack instead of the larger one), a fire extiguisher, a hi-visibility vest, bungee cords, zip ties and a lot of spanners . And some spark plugs, too!

The tools that Scotty listed make sense although I don't know that I want to carry a floor jack with me. Most are heavy and bulky if rated for your vehicles weight. I would assume that any mechanically capable owner would keep a set of basic hand tools in his vehicles at all times. I'd add some things, starting with a prepared driver who has practiced backing up his car and changing a flat tire at home, and read the Maintenance Section of the Owners Manual for the car. I wouldn't rent or borrow a vehicle if it lacked that manual in the glove box., and I'd flag the index page of the Maintenance section, which shows the jacking points, fuses, lamps and fluids to use, and describes the safe methods for towing the vehicle. I would add a dedicated non activated burner phone and dc adapter. By law, all cellphones sold in the US must be able to call 911 without activation. You are more likely to be hurt, or get hurt yourself at a roadside emergency than at home. Your health is more important than your car. It should contain a first aid kit, including a basic manual, splints, elastic bandages, 4 or 6 inch square dressings, gauze, peroxide and betadine cleaner. Major injuries should be immobilized while waiting for assistance,minor ones cleaned and covered. Getting the lug nuts off is probably the hardest part of changing a flat tire. Factory lugnut wrenches are barely functional. A good quality folding crossbar lug nut wrench, or a telescoping breaker bar wrench with the correct size socket. is far superior. A car of TPMS rated flat inflater is often adequate and simpler. A piece of heavy cardboard or thin plywood under any jack will help stabilize it on less than ideal surfaces. A rain poncho , a blanket and a small tarp can help you get through an emergency service cleaner and in more comfort. Waterless hand cleaner and paper towels, for cleaning your hands after you tear the gloves that have been deteriorating in your trunk for years. Some double-bagged granola bars to give you an energy boost through a stressful energy draining situation, and a bottle of water to keep you hydrated. For your own vehicle, a set of replacement fuses.

Hi Scotty love the videos, and your way of thinking, Not sure about carrying so much stuff in the back of your car though. With proper and regular maintenence you cam do without most of it. Don't forget to tie the stuff down so it doesn't kill you on impact.

Skip the jumper cables and go with a booster pack. Halfway decent ones can be picked up for cheap at an auto parts store or Walmart and you won't be sitting there waiting for someone to offer you a jump start. And if you're in an empty parking lot or parking garage with no one around, you're SOL. Just hook up two clamps on the jumper pack to your dead battery, turn a switch and you're good to go. Just remember to plug it into an AC outlet once a month to make sure it's got a full charge.

It's March 2018 and I recently started watching SK's Channel. Now I get the ending scene where Scotty opens and appears from the trunk. Mechanic in the trunk! Though I might not have a mechanic in my trunk, after watching Scottys' videos, there are car repair and operation issues in the back of my mind.

Good advice, but I'd add to your list. If you live somewhere it gets really cold it's a good idea to have an emergency blanket or sleeping bag in the trunk. Also, some shelf stable food like granola bars or power bars and a bottle of two or water. Might seem crazy, but where I live I've seen storms that cripple highways and strand people for hours waiting for rescue, having a way to keep warm and something to satisfy a grumbling tummy can make that situation much better.

If your going to keep brake fluid in your car buy a new, unopened container. Brake fluid is hydroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture. Moisture will also lower the boiling temp of the brake fluid. Brake fluid also absorbs air, so putting brake fluid from an open container in your reservoir means putting air into your system.

@Joseph9536 oh, yes you can . There are still jacking points on the suspension system, and small floor jacks like mine will fit on the jack area that factory jacks fit on.

Throw jack stands in if you are using a hydraulic jack

1. A fully charged phone. 2. A 'AAA Roadside Assistance' card or similar.

@Rafaelipod noises are fun, first, see if it makes it only when moving, or will make it when just idling and running. so then you know if it's a wheel moving noise, or an internal engine noise. Then go from there.

A pair of 10" curve jaw vice grips is a good general purpose emergency tool, amazing what you can do with them if pressed. Tie down the heavy stuff, you don't want it flying in an accident!

I keep a 2.5 ton jack, good tie-down straps, bungee chords, jumper cables, an emergency jump starter (in the winter), Haynes car repair manual for my truck, an army surplus wool blanket, fire extinguisher, road flairs, and a small emergency bag with 1 MRE, leatherman Wave (with bit kit), ice scraper, matches, lighter, emergency blanket, paracord, whistle, flashlight, vice grips, good leather gloves, water bottle, and of course a full roll of DUCT TAPE all behind the seat of my single cab truck!

@PARABOLOUS Not yet, but basically you just unbolt em and try cleaning em with carb cleaner. Only hassle is getting em off, some are in near impossible areas to reach with a wrench and they tend to rust on.
