1995 Kentucky Derby. I liked horse racing but wasn't much of a better nor followed horse racing closely. I went to an offtrack betting site with my sister and brother-in-law. Brother-in-law was big into racing and betting. They were looking at the racing form for the KD while I looked over their shoulders. Suddenly, I pointed to Thunder Gulch and said, "There's your winner." Imagine my shock when he actually won!!! Wish I could do that all the time. 😆
I,ve watch all of Secretariats races several times. Including the 1973 Kentucky Derby live with my family and this is the 1973 Preakness where he also set a track record that I believe still stands today.
The most amazing part is the fact that Sham may have been the all time greatest horse but luck was not on his side competing with a freak abnormality super horse that had twice the pump moving oxygen through his body. Still Sham was right there every time with a normal size heart. Incredible stuff
Sham's dam had the same gene as Secretariats mom and passed it on to Sham. Their mother's were half sisters. Sham just couldn't compete with Secretariat. His stride was enormous with his huge back rump propelling him farther and faster.
N.B.IF YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH YOU' LL FIND OUT THAT SHAM ALSO HAD A LARGER HEART THAN OTHER HOSES,HE HAD THE SAME GENE AS SECRETARIAT. THEY WERE FAMILY.I ALSO LIKE SHAM.MOST PEOPLE DON' T REALISE THAT SHAM ALSO BROKE THE RECORD FOR THE TWO FIRST RACES OF THE 1973 TRIPLE CROWN BECAUSE HE CAME SECOND.
1973, I was at Churchill Downs this year to see Secretariat make history. I bet on Sham, who was a really good Colt, if I'm not mistaken also broke the old record in the Derby. He just ran against a big red monster.
Wow. I didn't watch the race live. And in fact didn't watch it until after Secretariat won the Preakness (the Preakness was the race shown here, btw not the Derby). He blew the Derby record away I don't think any horse will ever break 2 minutes in that race except Secretariat. Most are much slower for example this years win which was exceptionally slow for some reason. Some years these horses just ain't putting out like they used to.
@@leecowell8165 Sham's time was never officially recorded, so it is impossible to tell where he would have been placed in the records. However, his time is usually judged to be 1:59.9. I was also confused as to why the Preakness was shown, but I believe it has to do with RU-vid restrictions.
Secretariat's Derby is an amazing race and should be shown here. Worth watching in this context is Secretariat's 1st mile and 1/4 of the Belmont which is the Derby distance and again extremely fast. Sham should not be forgotten, with a fanttastic Derby time even thought 2nd to Secretariat.
This race is the Preakness! At least Secretariat's is. anyhow he STILL has the record for all 3 races of the crown. unreal! I believe that someday some horse will beat his records in the KD & Preakness but that Belmont mark is absolutely UNTOUCHABLE! No horse will ever match that time and in fact no horse since has come within 16 LENGTHS of his time! THAT IS AN UNGODLY bar to reach! What truly amazes me though is Turcotte never touched his whip in any of these races AND Secretariat was not even being "pushed" in that Belmont but he still absolutely BLEW the prior record off the planet... Turcotte stated years later that had he been pushed he would have run it even faster because he had NO HAND in the race it was all Secretariat showing the world what he could do. What was incredible was that every quarter was FASTER than the previous one with the last one being his FASTEST! yeah his afterburners were on fire!
The 1973 race was the Preakness. Also, the second fastest time is not Monarchos. It happened to be Sham at 1:59.8 who finished second to Secretariat's 1:59.4 in 1973.
Oh my gosh, the secretariat clip is so exciting to view; it just never gets old you know? What a freaking horse.i still yell for him. The year the Fusaichi pegasus won the derby I had been hiking out at Toroweap on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. My sister was visiting and we drove from the viewpoint to her hotel room in St. George, UT to catch the Derby race just in time. Whew! We nearly missed it.
Secretariat is the best of all, although we saw the Preakness instead of the KD (apparently due to You Tube restrictions) it is always good to see Big Red run, however I think the time of Monarchos in the KD of 2001 was 1:59.97 verified on the KD website. however I enjoyed this great video
@@sallydattoli2143 It is true that Ron Turcotte used the whip very little with Secretariat, however in the triple crown the only time he stimulated Secretariat with the whip was in the Kentucky Derby, if you look carefully when Secretariat enters the final stretch Ron Turcotte used the whip on at least four occasions, Secretariat responded decisively and took off from the pack winning by a comfortable lead over Sham that until the end was very demanded by his rider Laffit Pinkay Jr.
What happened to SECRETARIAT & SHAM WHO BOTH BROKE THE OLD RECORD SET BY NORTHERN DANCER OF 2 MINUTES FLAT?. FOR THE RECORD SHAM HAD THE SAME GENE AS SECRETARIAT, WHICH GAVE HIM A HEART LARGER THAN OTHER HORSES. SECRETARIAT & SHAM WERE RELATED.
The slowest estimate of his time is very slightly faster than Monarchos’ time by 4 hundredths of a second. I wonder if someone could do the official time by looking at the tapes the way they did for the final official time on Secretariat’s Preakness. He deserved and deserves more recognition. The second fastest Derby ever is impressive.
I picked up on the mistake too. Secretariat's KD is all over RU-vid by numerous content creators. Gee, there must be some way to fix it? I am a HUGE Secretariat fan, and was looking forward to seeing him run the Kentucky Derby even though I have seen it possibly thousands of times! He ran it like no horse can: by increasing speed throughout the race. It is history. One day a colt with a good sprint at the end, might break it? Hope not. The old timing isn't precise breaking the second into fifths. Today it is One 1/100ths of a second. We need forensic timing here like they did to figure out his Preakness win 1:53 Flat.
@@TrustTheProphets BS - You don't even mention the race is the Preakness, and then back the clock so that it hits his Kentucky Derby time. Did you actually think people wouldn't notice it was the wrong race? I know its 50 years ago, but just by the number of entries even a casual racing fan would know its wrong.
Secretariat's race was the Preakness NOT the Derby. He did not take the lead until the last stretch of the Derby...This is a great video but I wish they would correct it and put the 1973 Derby instead of the Preakness.
Secretariat's race was at Pimlico. This was not Kentucky derby. Monarchos has the 3rd fastest kentucky derby time. Not 2nd. Sham who lost to Secretariat has the 2nd fastest Derby time.
@@stichmoellis You would be right..though Monarchos (2001) was the only other WINNER at Kentucky Derby to go below two minutes (1:59:94), Sham did a time of 1:59:74 coming in behind Secretariat. I'm probably the only person in the world that was able to watch all three races of Triple Crown by Secretariat in three different continent on real time and, up to this day, still feel bad for Sham. It's like all those track sprinters who had the bad luck of being at their prime and competing against Usain Bolt at his prime..lousy freaking timing//
I read the comments and see your explanation for showing Secretariat's Preakness race instead of the KD. It seems mighty odd that there would be copyright issues on his Kentucky Derby race. I see it all over youtube and not just from the networks involved.
He ran it in 1:59:97. Secretariat, ran it at 1:59 2⁄5 (at that time, the Derby was timed to the fifth of a second rather than to the hundredth of a second).
