Top 10 Favorite New World Tarantulas

Well, at least my top 10 for the moment!
After posting my top 5 favorite Old World species, it became clear that I was going to have to do one for New World's as well. And, as I had such a terrible time narrowing my OWs down to 5, I decided to double the size of the list this time around.
To be truthful, I'm not happy with it. I love all of my tarantulas, and I have a very difficult time rating one over another. Even now that this is done, I'm not okay with the order or what I encluded. I'm second-guessing myself for leaving off P. sazimai, T. ockerti, and D. diamantinensis . Oh, well...

Almost like a christmas spider! lol. I like watching your videos and also the guides on RU-vid and on your website so much. They are so educative and I really appreciate that you share so much knowledge with us. I´d give you tons of thumbs up and subscriptions if I only could. Please keep doing what you doing! I know you can´t buy something from it, but you are the reason why I feel educated enough to get my very own Tarantula pet. Hopefully this channel is growing a lot more because in my opinion you really deserve it!

And thank you so much for the kind words! I do the website and the blog because I remember how difficult it was to get good information or a friendly voice to answer questions. Your comments have made my week! :) THANKS!

Also I want to tell you I've noticed you try hard to respond to everybody that comments on your videos and I just want to tell you how cool it is , actually getting to interact with a content creator such as yourself. Thanks so much, Heinrich! Just saw them in concert again in April. It was small indoor venue, which was sweet. They're great live. And I love interacting with folks, especially from other countries. Was surprised to see that Euathlus parvulus didn't make an appearance! I know you've expressed a lot of love for the species ;) My condolences about your female, by the way. I recently picked one up from Anastasia at the show in White Plains (I'd seen her at the previous show and was really regretting missing out on her--I emailed Anastasia afterwards and then a month later she got back to me saying she still had her but had packed he away in the "soon to molt" area of her T room! So I picked her up the next day 😁). Thank you for introducing me to the beauty of the species, by the way. Very underrated. I'm totally in love with my little Lillian already, and I probably never would have picked her up if not for your videos and blog posts!
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 6 лет назад
I actually wanted to add her, but mine died earlier this year, and I got bummed out working with the old footage of her. I definitely need to get another, as it is an AMAZING species. Crud..I should have had it on the list anyway. haha And congrats on getting one! I was actually eyeing one of Anastasia's myself! I agree that they are terribly underrated...and hard to find!

So happy to see another faves vid! I love the G. pulchripes, B. albopilosum, B. vagans, and B. auratum. And Euathlus sp. red, of which I have two teeny slings. I don't know if I could pick a favorite, either! Now after watching this, I think my next T will be N. tripepei. . . I have a thing for fluffy Ts.

Hey Tom! Awesome video, just enjoying my one day off and catching up on some "fun" videos. Totally agree with you on the G. iheringi, I love those guys so much, they are super pretty and I just love the name "iheringi" and "Entre Rios". Bumba horrida still kinda freak me out, they are beautiful but too true-spider like. I love Theraphosa but I'm unfortunately quite sensitive to their hairs and while I've never been haired by the spider I had an incident with a moult lol. Filling the void for "Giant spider" with my L. carpenteri and O. violaceopes :) They won't hair me 😂 Here is my list, the first 3 are in order and everything after that is kinda wibbly wobbly. I put "and genus" because I could easily fill the entire list with species from these genera. I know I'm going to have a MUCH harder time doing the Old World list... 1. Ephebopus murinus + Ephebopus genus- TOTALLY underrated, best genus ever. Super chill spiders and very visible in my experience (that is, if you go in with a red flashlight at night, they will be hanging out of their burrows). Absolutely beautiful from slings to adults, I have E. murinus, cyanognathus, uatuman, and rufescens and they're all awesome hunters, I've never been kicked at, and they are just all around great spiders. I was SO excited when you got all those slings!!! 2. Sericopelma sp. Santa Catalina- saw my first barrel roll the other night, I dropped in a cricket I thought was too large and before I could fish it out she shot out from under the plant and jumped on it, wrestled it down, and ended up on her back. I *love* this spider! I cannot wait to see what colours it picks up! Beautiful sling too, another spider that is beautiful as slings and adults! 3. Typhochlaena seladonia + Typhochlaena genus- What can I say, they are beautiful and super unique. They're also apparently very gentle with the males which makes sense given how small their sacs are. The trapdoor behaviour is just so cool and unique and of course they are STUNNING! 4. Megaphobema robustum- beautiful spider, gives you the look of a Brachy x Phormictopus without the Brachy growth rate. In my experience they pick up the adult colours super early on, which is awesome. 5. Acanthoscurria geniculata + Acanthoscurria genus- Wow I love Acanthoscurria so much, they have some extremely beautiful species! Tom Patterson has a few and I almost placed an order but working on limiting the BIG t's til I clear out some of these males... 6. Nhandu tripepii + Nhandu genus- I don't yet have a tripepii but it's top of my wishlist right now. I just love the story about your chromatus beheading crickets, and having heard you and many others describe this genus as "kooky" or "whacky" I figured I had to grab them up! 7. Psalmopoeus irminia- Beautiful spider, mine is super weird and likes to lounge on her back in a plastic flower, yes she has done this on multiple occasions. I love Psalmos, this one could also be victori, they are both gorgeous! 8. Thrixopelma ockerti + Thrixopelma genus- Just picked up a T. ockerti and I already love it despite it hairing me every time I go in to do maintenance, lol. I am absolutely loving it, incredible hunter, super unique look as a sling, really beautiful colouration and patterning. 9. Agnostopelma tota and Tmesiphantes obesus- barely in the hobby, I think Joe Rossi had them a while back (A. tota) and I don't think T. obesus is in the hobby at all, but they are SO CUTE and SO ROUND I just cannot NOT love them! Dude they are SO ROUND. I suggest the name Agnostopelma nickiminiaji (with love to Nicki your A. chalcodes) 10. Antikuna sp.- these are very new to the hobby I think they have a few of them in Europe though. Check out Antikuna cyanofemur and Antikuna valladaresi, they are absolutely amazing! All I really know is that they are from high altitudes in South America, but I am hoping we will start to establish them over here! Already had to come back and edit this cause I realised I forgot my Tliltocatl verdezi! She is an ABSOLUTE sweetheart and she's definitely a pet rock but for some reason I'm particularly enamoured with her even though I usually prefer fossorials or arboreals. My boss received her as a freebie with a P. metallica and he didn't want her so he gave her to me and she was still a tiny brown sling, he didn't remember what she was so I just took it and did my best. Since then, she's grown up into a beautiful fluffy female, and sometimes it's like "hey girl I was rejected a lot too don't worry" she's just such a beautiful specimen. I have her in a beautiful front opening enclosure with lighting and (hopefully soon) a pothos. Love that girl so much, she's basically my version of "The Queen" Awesome video Tom, keep up the awesome work! - Charlotte

I was really concerned there when you didn't mention any Phormictopus for so long, lol Also for me any list would have to include G. pulchra (so pretty!), A. geniculata (I like the look of the black carapace more than the bright one of N. chromatus) and P. irminia (just so elegant, not even pokies can beat that). Oh, and AWESOME SHIRT! Praise the sun! \[T]/

Great video as always. I also go back & forth with trying to pick favourites. I hope you can make a video in the future of the Phormictopus genus. I recently bought 2 i think they are auratus but were sold as platus witch is bogus according to arachnoboards. They are feeding machines & always out in the open. They are about 2-2 1/4". Love them. If i can get more Phormictopus sp. I most definitely will. Take care buddy. 🤗🕷🕸🇸🇪

Thanks to you and @TheDarkDen I've overcome my fear of spiders enough to get one. B. Vagans, an absolutely adorable female who is slowly winning the hearts & minds of my co-workers. A few of them are scared of spiders as well and they love having her around. I've had Rattlesnakes, etc but never considered T's until coming across you channel and his. Now I feel like I had been missing out on something amazing :) Keep up the amazing work! Cheers from Colorado!

I'm really excited to watch her grow (right now shes about 2 in) Two quick questions if you've got the time, we are keeping her at my office and during the week the temperature is pretty consistent (around 70-72) but on the weekends they turn the heat down (around 60), what would you recommend I try to keep things warmer for her? She has burrowed and seems to be doing well, I just want to be proactive and make sure shes comfortable on Saturday and Sunday when we aren't here. Question 2, is that Solaire on your shirt? #PraisetheSun
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 6 лет назад
HI, Joseph! Is there a warmer corner you could keep her in? You COULD mount a heat mat on the wall, and position the enclosure so that it's not too close to heat. You'll just want to keep the edge of and make sure it doesn't get too warm. Temps that low shouldn't harm it, but it's not really ideal. Praise the sun! hahahaha Yes, it sure is! :)
@josephh957
@josephh957 6 лет назад
She's in the warmest spot on my desk, I think I will try a really small heating pad and see how that goes. I'm glad to hear that 60 degrees won't harm her, but at the same time, if I can make things more ideal for her I will certainly try. Will keep you posted, and thanks for all the insight! Its been invaluable.

I'd have to say my all time favorite NW would be the P. Irminia. Seeing as I have five of them in my own small collection. I do want a cambridgie though, I like that olive green. But I can never get over seeing my big beautiful irminia with her bright orange lightning bolt on her legs and the tiger stripes all on a Stark black body. Plus mine will literally jump at her prey haha. Great list tom! Honestly I think I'd be just as bad on deciding which ones would be on the list lol.

Great list, although it’s likely completely changed since you posted lol. I love the ease of maintenance of some of the terrestrial New Worlds and over the years have begun to focus more on them-especially Brachypelma, Grammostola, and Aphonopelma. I guess my number one would possibly be Brachypelma klaasi. Love B. schroederi also. And you can’t go wrong with Grammostola pulchra. Yep, Theraphosa stirmi rates high. I’m raising a Homoeomma chilensis sling and can’t wait for adult coloring. I know I’ll love it too. Again, great list, Tom!

That's an great list Tom, I think I agree on a lot of them, though I myself like the Cancerides the ost in the phormictopus genus haha and I would have to squeez in Davus pentaloris somewhere (probably for the b. cabocla but only since I havent been able to find one here in the netherlands. and you are right about the Theraphosa they arent hard to take care of, I have a Blondi that I got as a first instar and she is about 3`3,5 inch now she is a bit skittish but she already calmed down some after her last molt. great video, like it! P. Cambridgei is also one of my favorite Arboreal species. (Had a few Aviucularias and Poecilotherias as well, but I liked it more) My female was pretty calm, non-aggressive , but sometimes she would teleport for 20 cms. If spooked they are very skittish and incredibly fast. The green and the orange from the feet are amazing once they grow.

Hi, Craig! I have four dogs and four kids, so there is a LOT of traffic in my house (even in the tarantula room). They don't seem to mind at all. Hi, Charlie! Thanks so much (although I realized after I posted that I forgot to include the GBB, one of my favs. haha). I use a mixture of topsoil with some vermiculite. I moved away from the coco fiber a while back (it was getting expensive), and I've used this for a while with good results.
@charlieharper886
@charlieharper886 6 лет назад
Thanks for the reply. I'd like to get away from coco fiber myself. Like you said, it gets expensive after a while, especially when you have a lot of tarantulas. Plus, I like my enclosures to look natural, like you cut out a small section of the their natural environment and put it in a tank. Hard to get that with coco fiber. Lol. I'll have to look next time I'm at Walmart or Lowe's or something. Any particular brands to look for that you've maybe had better results with? I know to look for the ones that don't have fertilizer in them. GBB's are nice. Oddly enough, I've never had any. That's the T that everybody seems to have like five of, but it's one of the ones I've never had. Lol.

I didn't know you used to be an arachnophobe. Pretty cool to see you go from being afraid of spiders to running one of the best T info sites and having this huge collection. I would say my spider fear has gotten better since I've been obsessed with researching Ts, but it's kind of inspiring for people like me to know that you can overcome the fear to the point of owning a crapload of old worlds. I am smittin with your P Antinous, would you rate them as an ok beginner's species?
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 6 лет назад
BIG time, and I grew up on a farm and did landscaping for a few years, so I was always around spiders. I NEVER killed them, and even as a kid I used to cup them an put them outside. I was terrified of them, but fascinated at the same time. It took years, but I have no irrational fear of them anymore. :) That's a tough call. When mine was smaller, she was quite skittish, but she's calmed down a bit as an adult (you can see how well she just sits there). Pros are they are pretty hardy, VERY fast growing, eat well, and are gorgeous. Cons would be they need a bit of moisture (water dish and moisten part of the sub), they can be skittish, and they get quite large. If you're informed and have some experience, you would probably be okay with them. :) Thanks! Tom

Hello! Great question. Tarantulas are usually nocturnal, and although many have no issue with the lights being on during the day (they will hide if it bothers them), they should be kept out of sunlight. I actually blocked out the window in my tarantula room with shade to keep the light from coming in and hitting my enclosures. Some folks I know actually keep the lights off in their tarantula rooms at all times. Hope that helps!

Your T's are just breath taking. I am an arachnophobic however just recently my grandson talked me into catching a wolf spider and setting up an enclosure for it. I have enjoyed caring for the spider. It molted a couple weeks ago and that was awesome to see. My fear of spiders is still there but not as strong as before. I don't ever see myself handling any spider. I am thinking about getting a tarantula. I really like the pumpkin patch T. Is this a good T to start out with?
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 6 лет назад
Thanks, Kathie! I started out as an arachnophobe as well, so I definitely understand where you are coming from. :) Starting with a small wolf spider is a great place to start. They aren't as imposing, and you'll get to experience some of the fascinating facets of the hobby, like feeding and molting. The pumpkin patches can be a little fast and skittish, but you would probably find the behaviors similar to those of your wolf spider. I currently have 8 of them (two adult females I raised from babies, and 6 spiderlings from a recent breeding I did), and they are among one of my favorite species.

Hi, Paul! HIgher temps definitely lead to faster growth rates. I keep mine in the 70s all year, and I speak to folks who have higher temps (some in the 80s). They report faster growth rate overall. I tend to get MANY more molts in the summer where the temps in my room are high 70s to 80s.

Chromatopelma Cyaneopubescens isn't on your list? Love the way they web everything up!

Well, that's embarrassing! The C. cyaneopubescens was absolutely supposed to be on the list. I shot the video, had it edited, and somehow left it off the list. UGHHHHHHHHHH I don't know how the heck I managed to leave it off. I actually just had to rewatch the video because I thought it was on there! Yes, they are amazing, and it should have been in my top 5.

The Entre Rios is definitely underrated, granted it's a little newer in the hobby. Really unique for a grammo. And no joke on the appetite, mine is a straight consumption machine

So, I'm currently considering getting my first tarantula and been scouring the internet (youtube in particular) for information and I get how hard it must be to discriminate between all these wonderful creatures. From all the information I've gathered I've been able to narrow my favorite down to the genus Brachypelma as they seem to have it all (personality, looks, availability, and are easy to keep) but I do love that orange color so my primary candidates are b.auratum, b. hamorii, b. boehmei, and that's how far I've managed to get.

So sorry for the late reply! You'll do well if you start with Brachypelma. They are GORGEOUS spiders, and the majority of them make for great beginners. Just know that the B. auratum can be a little more skittish than some of the others.
