That Sakic calls for Bourque as soon as he touches the cup, doesn't even lift it and hands it straight to him, as if it's his only concern in that moment, gets me every time.

the entire season was about getting ray the cup. sakic told the team they have to finish first and guarantee home ice advantage. they won the presidents trophy, sakic was the mvp and he finished second in points to jagr with 54 goals and 118 points. it was a really really special season.

The noteworthy call for the kings first cup happened at the end of the game not during the celebration so it didn’t even get an honorable mention, yet as a franchise, they had similar droughts to St. Louis and Washington they were just first to win it. St. Louis should’ve been an honorable mention as well although I don’t remember the celebration as much as I remember them winning.

"And after 22 years, RAYMOND BOURQUE!" Will never, *never* not make me tear up. Can't stand Boston, and growing up in Anchorage, AK I was of course a Devil's fan from like 96-02 primarily because of Scotty Gomez. But I remember even at only 8 years old when the Avs beat them for the cup, I still was able to grasp and respect that Bourque had earned it, even if it meant beating the Devil's to get it. And I sobbed as a little kid when Sakic passed it to him. Then my parents cried when they thought I was crying so hard from being sad the Devil's lost until I told them it was "all for Ray".

Y'all played hard that series and it was enjoyable to watch, even though tensions got real high at certain points (Boston was 97 times worse if it makes you feel better). And I think I speak for many Canes fans here when I say that I loved seeing Ovi with the cup. I don't think I've ever seen that much intense joy from a captain even before actually receiving the trophy in any sport ever.
@Howlingburd19
@Howlingburd19 4 года назад
Nick Sojka the biggest issue with that series is I believe YOU guys played your asses off (no seriously, Carolina’s got a very young, energetic, and talented squad), while I feel like we did not. Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Carlson truly showed up, while nobody else did. If you want your team to win the whole thing, EVERY single player has to show up. And in the 2018 Playoffs, every Caps player did show up, but in this year’s Quarterfinals, only a couple did. But we can absolutely both agree Boston is the definition of cancer, and it was very beautiful seeing Marchand crying xD

He endured over a decade of playoff torture at our hands lol. He damn well deserved it. The primal scream he let out upon hoisting Lord Stanley was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Good for him. Not this year though Great 8! Prob gonna be Tampa but the Pens pose more of a threat than they did last year for sure. Murray is red hot. They’ll make some noise.

S Choudhry Don’t get me wrong, I hate Tampa. I’d much rather see the Avs win lol I actually love the Avalanche (especially the 96-2001 teams but then again who doesn’t). S Choudhry The Capitals of 2016-2017 were obviously great (and whoever said their window was closed was clearly foolish, the core was all still there) but Tampa had 127 points this year for pete’s sake!!! As a Sabres and Wings fan. Idc how much Detroit and the avalanche hated each other.... The moment Raymond Borque raised the cup I cried. The greatest Stanley Cup celebration and top 10 maybe even top 5 moments in the NHL. Sakic, Yzerman, Messier, Leumiux were some of the greatest captains. Sakic will forever be known as the captain who put his desire to raise the cup first, aside, for a man who deserved the cup more than anyone else in the NHL at the time. I still cry watching his family cry, for that out to tell you how much that moment meant not only to Ray, but his family. That is a family who put all their needs second to their father/husband to fulfill his dream. Absolutely spine chilling when you think about it. Hockey in the 90's and 2000's are some of the best moments I was blessed to witness growing up. I was 8 years old crying watching Ray lift that cup. That's how much of a impact that moment hit us in majority of our lives.

Honestly, Konstantinov in the wheelchair should've been number one. Not taking anything away from Bourque or his undoubtedly great moment, he was a phenomenal player who 100% deserved a Stanley Cup. The thing is, we've seen great players go to contenders as one last ditch effort to get a Cup. It isn't anything new. Show me one other time that a team won a Cup, lost a teammate due to a horrific accident, then won it again the next year just so they could put it in his lap while he's sitting in a wheelchair. One of the greatest moments in NHL history.

But Ray Bourque was one of the best defencemen of all time, anyone who lived through the nineties knows how much soul, talent, and leadership he gave to the Bruins. Sure it happened to Lanny, Andreychuk, Ovechkin but they didn't have the same circumstances as Bourque because they either weren't the same caliber or had waited long enough to make it equivalent. Can you imagine if Lidstrom with all of the individual hardware and consistent domination, but in all of his 20+ years he had never won a cup? But in his final year he would be on a team that would come back from a 3-1 deficit in the finals to win it in game 7? The Avs very likely wouldn't have won that cup without him. Plus Sakic breaking tradition made it even more special. You would feel exactly the same way. The Wings never had their players wait 20+ years to win the cup
@cdrhiggins
@cdrhiggins 5 лет назад
The underhand pass to Bourque is iconic though. Yes, the Konstantinov celebration is emotional and something else, but Yzerman raised it before he handed it off. If Yzerman took it and handed it off immediately, then yes, number 1. But Sakic passed it off to a legend, no hesitation, and let Bourque take a lap before anyone else got to touch it. That's what makes it number 1 for me. PLUS Konstantinov previously won the cup with the team in '97. 22 years is more impactful to me than a player winning a back to back (even if he was injured during '98)
@CodyHeimbach
@CodyHeimbach 5 лет назад
@@cdrhiggins He didn't win it back to back. He won in 1997 and suffered lifelong brain trauma due to his drunk limo driver in the off-season. He was told he'd never walk again. Ask Bourque if he'd rather have his Cup or his brain.
