+Rachel Bejerano Artemis was not the Goddess of the moon, The greek goddess of the moon(and its personification) was Selene or in Greek(both ancient and modern) "Σελήνη" . What you think of is her Latin(or roman) equivalent Diana.

Myst Pagoudis Helios was the God of the sun, but Apollo was also the God of the sun. Artemis was the Goddess of the moon, and Selene was the Goddess of the moon. Mythology makes no sense sometimes.

Actually that's written nowhere at least not in any text I've ever read(that Apollo was the god of the sun) Apollo was the god of light(among many things). And trust me , being Greek kinda compeled me to learn my country's mythology in depth,and so I've read some of the ancient greek texts(and did not have the disadvantage of reading the muddled half translations full of conjectures that the rest of the world is stuck with). There is no Greek text that says that Artemis is a goddess of the moon...(there are plenty of latin ones about Diana though). Many people think that the ancient roman gods are exactly the same as the ancient Greek ones...but people forget that the romans adopted the Greek "pantheon" and changed it to better fit their already existing gods and beliefs. (same as the christian church altered some of their teachings in order to be better accepted by the common people...aka make the image of god look surprisingly similar to that of zeus, adapting ancient words(and totaly mutilating their meaning) like Demon "Δέμον" etc.) trust me on this one.

In all ancient Greek poems(where the moon was invoked) the name for the godess was Selene (save for the Endymion myth where Hera occasionaly doubled for the Moon goddess.) Finaly I would appreaciate it if you could share your sources wtih me please,and not the notes of some researcher,or book writer, but from original ancient Greek texts,because any self proclaimed "researcher" can proclaim whatever he/she wants and mistranslate texts from a language that he/she doesn't fully understand and where one missed tiny mark can change the full of a word or line. ,for my part I've never seen such texts about Artemis not in Greek at least(ancient or modern) so if you've any such texts please share em with me.

You failed to state on which of Sophocles or Euripides states that she is so I can actually check a specific part and not have to scour through each and every one of their works. It also occured to me that if that's the works you've read then your conjecture that during the 3rd century BC artemis and Selene merged are downright false. SInce none of the litterature you stated here was made during that time: Iliad and Odyssey were written during the 8th Century BC, Hesiod's Theogony somwhere around 8th and 7th Century. And both Sophocles and Euripedes lived during the 5th century BC. If those are the works you've read and base your theory then your conjectures can't be right. Again as I said in the begining my post(all of them) were never meant to insult anyone,I simply stated the facts as they are...translating Greek (ancient or modern) into another language has many traps,many translators in the past have failed myserably just because they did not know the full definition of a word and decided to use their own languages as a "template" for their translation ending up with huge mistakes*. And I never hypothesised that you don't know anything about the subject but as I can see so fart your knowledge is lacking or at least is "infected" by the common misconseption that the Greek and Roman gods were exactly the same. *(most noteable translation mistake for me was the first "genius" that translated Kratos into strenght and now everyone save the Greeks think that Kratos was a God of strenght(with some minor exceptions)

Actually, they do not have equal power. Hades is the weakest of the three, but still extremely strong when compared to others. Poseidon, I think, is the god of more things which can be used in combat. He has some impact on both land and air, being the god of earthquakes and the god of storms. I feel that Poseidon is the most powerful of the three (he's even overthrown Zeus a few times before). Zeus is the youngest of the three, but is also extremely strong. People consider him to be the strongest of the gods to an extent to take them all on and win, but I think that's an overstatement. I don't agree with Zeus being 1 and Poseidon 2, but I do find it reasonable. Hades is the most dangerous, Poseidon is the most powerful, and Zeus is the strongest in body and mind. That is how Poseidon can go toe to toe with Zeus and win on some occasions and lose in a good fight. That is also how Hades can come close to destroying the others, but falling short on ability. That is also how Zeus can win against Hades and go toe to toe with Poseido and win mostly and put up a good fight on some losses.

+Netin11 Actually if you know about Zeus's battle with the monster Typhon, that battle pretty clearly establishes Zeus as the strongest of the olympian gods as when every other god including poseiden are terrified of typhon and run away, Zeus actually fights with him and manages to beat him, and he is also considered the king of the olympians which outright calls him the strongest god among the olympians. Also I doubt Hades is the weakest of the three as even though he is not considered an olympian he commands over the entire underworld and being much more just and noble (relatively) than his other two brothers. Zeus is definitely the most powerful as he was the only god capable of taking on typhon that even poseiden and hades were terrified of. Also I do not believe Poseiden was able to overthrow Zeus through shear power or without help from other gods.

Sorry to say mate but no Artemis is not a moon goddess, that's Selene, you have fallen for the same misconseption many people fall, they notion that the Roman gods and the Greek ones are exactly the same. Mars the roman counterpart of Ares for instance is also an agricultural god unlike Ares, and also unlike Ares,Mars was beloved by the other gods and was considered to be second only to Zeus. In the same way Diana the roman counterpart of Artemis is also a Moon goddess, but artemis is not, the Moon Goddess of Greek mythology is Selene.

I go to a riding stable occasionally and they have a beautiful white horse there called selene, guess they compared her colour to the moon and named her accordingly. :)

ok sorry but many of the things you are saying here are wrong, first of all Hekate was never an olympian, she was a chthonic goddess(that means she resides in the underworld and not on Olympus) and a titan as well. she is not a Queen of witches there is no such thing in Greek mythology,BUT she is goddess of the magical art,also no necromancy in Greek mythology either, and no she is not a goddess of ghosts or a goddess of the moon YET she was asscosiated with the moon. Now on what she actually was, A goddess of crossroads, a minor earth sky and sea goddess(she got the powers from her parentage) BUT only because Zeus allowed her to keep most of her "powers" out of respect and because she did not take part against the Olympians during the Titanomachy and out of those powers only a small part of the control over earth,sky and sea. Now you seem to want to downplay Hestia, but I'm afraid hestia was way more popular in ancient Greece than Hekate would ever be, Hestia had litteraly a shrine in each and every house there was, and was honored daily by everyone since she was a goddess of the hearth and household life in general(among other things). Now is Hekate underated by many? yes. Does she belong in the list of the more popular gods ? no, because this is a list of gods, and she was a titaness.

Athena is the godess of wisdom,crafts and the strategical part of warfare. It has nothing to do with her being the protector of athens(actually she was not a protector,it did fall to her "duty" but Athens was more like a city devout mainly to her more so than the other gods...I don't know if there is a word equivelant for wjay we use in Greek.) . Since if you read numerus texts like the odyssey and the trojan wars.she tends to meddle a lot,heck it was her that inspired Odyseus to make the trojan horse.

Besides In Greek Hades literally means "a dark/unseen place" and it describes the underworld to a T, furthermore the reason that in a few cases people avoid using his name(because let's face it using a god's name equals invoking his attention) they use the name of the underworld,and even if we are to take that as a name it would only translate as "the unseen one"...
