It was almost a full 10 years after his last race start, and the first time driving that car for almost six months, during which it had been upgraded. He was clearly both out of his depth and past his best with Ferrari, but he was the 1992 F3000 champion and was far better than any of his F1 cars in the 90s ever allowed him to be.

I remember watching that race with Badoer and thinking 'Ah thats a pity' when I saw the Minardi breaking down. When I saw him break down crying and practically collapsing beside the car it made me realise that the difference between the top teams and the bottom teams is money, they all work incredibly hard and have to push as far as they can for everything they get in the sport. Those points would have meant the world to Badoer and Minardi back then, I miss that team, proper racers.

The Badoer one is still painful to watch today, especially considering many fans will remember him for his failed replacement in 2009 instead... By the way, you could probably fill the whole list with Alesi DNF. Unluckiest driver of the 90's, period.
@Hayden3210

I think badoer if he had been given atleast a midfield car in the 90s he could have made something better of his career, he was a bloody good test driver aswell
@holdenracer11
@holdenracer11 5 лет назад
I look at the equipment Badoer had in his career (2009 excluded) and it was all pretty ordinary. In 93 he had the Lola which was garbage, 95 he was in the Minardi which Lamy got 6th in Australia after almost everyone retired, 96 he was in the Forti which was slow and didn't make the end of the year and in 99 the Minardi was the bottom car. That drive at the Nurburgring was an amazing feat, he finally got to show what he was capable of and the car let him down.
@MastaMS21
@MastaMS21 5 лет назад
Also he was F3000 champion in 1992, in front of drivers like...Rubens Barrichello. And considering he covered about millions of km as a test driver during the Schumi-Todt era in Ferrari, he played his part in the success of the Scuderia.

Yeh, with Badoer, you don't win the F3000 championship at your first attempt without a bit of talent. Alesi was jolly unlucky in the 1990s, I agree, but I'd also put Johnny Herbert up there too, and Martin Brundle.

Times like those make you wonder how much of a domino effect that would create to drastically change F1 as it is today. If he won that race, he might not have lost the championship, Lewis would never have won the championship, he wouldn't have won any championship by 2013 and maybe that lack of a title would have prevented Mercedes from having a desire to sign him as a driver and Lewis would perhaps never have a WDC title to this day. Similar to how if Vettel was just .1 seconds slower in qualifying in Monza, he wouldn't have been on pole, perhaps he wouldn't have won the race and maybe never would have secured the Red Bull drive. It's crazy to think of how one miniscule thing in a split second could drastically reshape F1 for years.

That was a great drive from Massa. During qualifying McLaren looked so much faster in every way. So he knew he had to have a perfect start to get ahead of Hamilton. He did it and kept turning on the pace lap after lap. Even Ferrari didn't think they could have that good consistent pace during the race. Great championship battle. Even Lewis was denied a win in Belgium and given to Massa instead for a stupid penalty with a fight with Raikkonen. I guess it evened out at the end of the year.

I was waiting for Mansell in 91 all the time. He was a DNF in the first three races of the season all due to gearbox problems, Montreal was about to be his breakthrough win, he was already waving to the crowds 1min clear of Piquet on the last lap when his car stuck in neutral out of the hairpin. A more reliable gearbox over the season would have made him World Champion for sure. After three races, he was down 30 points already to Senna.

Truly when looking back, most painful DNFs in Formula 1 are those that ended the life or at least the career of the driver in question.

Very sad the retirement of Badoer,we miss so much the Minardi.. Dear F1, I suggest another dramatic and unlucky retirement from the lead. In 1980 at Watkins Glen on the last race of the season Bruno Giacomelli took the first pole position for the Alfa Romeo since 1951. After an excellent start he led the race with a gap of 12 second of difference between Alan Jones with the Williams but on lap 32 a ignition coil had burnt and the engine stopped. When they brought the car to the pits after the race they replaced the burned coil and the engine ignited immediately without problems. For Giacomelli that was a very frustrating moment.

This is rather morbid, but at Zandvoort in 1973 Roger Williamson's car crashed and caught fire after suffering a puncture. As he lay trapped in the overturned and burning vehicle, David Purley stopped his own car and sprinted to help, diving into the flames to try to free Williamson, who was calling out for help. As marshals stood by unable to help because of the heat, Purley ran across the track, grabbed an extinguisher and desperately tried to put out the fire before eventually being dragged away. It took eight minutes for the fire engine to arrive by which time Williamson had died of asphyxiation. David Purley's heartbreaking and heroic attempt to save him can be seen in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-afsfHjK1nCI.html
