The song is actually about just school shootings in general and to bring awareness to it, the bassist of foster the people, his cousin was in Columbine
This was back in '89 and '90 but my freshman year of HS we had a juke box in the cafeteria. One song that got played a lot was GNR's "Mr Brownstone". About drugs. But yeah, a lot of times the older generation doesn't pay much attention to the new generation's music. Even if they do, every generation had plenty of sketchy songs. Not sure why your principal freaked out over "pumped up kicks". I guarantee the music he grew up with probably had a more negative message.

Lana Del I mean he is 3rd grade you don’t understand what the lyrics mean but you sing it that’s what happened with me about a song talking about how good weed and cocaine was
My art class teacher played their music as background music when we were painting and shit. It was brought up eventually and we didn’t really care much. This was in Texas tho...
joan's bbq and foot massage I got Expelled for performing that song with my band And then at the end pulling out real looking guns and aiming them at the teachers I was literally asking to be kicked out
pumped up kicks is about columbine, the killers went for jocks n they wore whatever was the thing at the time, pumped up kicks was 80/90 slang for the best shoes
That happens all the time but except its almost all the Githic type weird peopke and its cringey when the do stuff like that and im just thinking: what happens at your hiyse3
I remember laughing at a kid cause he is the class clown then he said "Man I'll kill myself if I failed which I did"! Me and my friend was laughing 🤣 then he said " I will".. Then our faces was like 😳 then we got in trouble because of that
Well they also give the name of the creator. They dont really claim it as theirs or change it. Plus yea I think why would have alot of permission to do videos on this stuff.
@@calebbrown615 there's no real meaning behind it though, it's just an edgy song, that sounded more aggressive than it did happy. Like Imagine dragons demons was about not letting your dark side hold you back like Tyler Robinson. He had terminal cancer and still served as an inspiration for thousands of other people with terrible illnesses
I’ve heard “Rock the Casbah” since i was a little kid cause my parents were fans of the clash, and all I ever thought was “haha armadillos.” I was a stupid kid lmao
For those wondering: Mamma Mia: a song about an abusive relationship Paper Planes: a song about how many feel about immigrants Hey ya: a guy doesn't love his gf anymore, but she still loves him Big league: His son is dead Born in the USA: a Vietnam veteran gets treated like nothing upon returning to America
how well thx for the knowledge on mamma Mia I thought the one about the son being dead was he was killing people oh and do u know about little talks and bubbles?

@@nolongeractive.635 As she should've the song sounds so goddamn depressing. Even though it's just about the lead singer forgeting to lock his car and getting his stuff stolen
My friend was humming pumped up kicks in school once, and the fact that she makes jokes about depression all the time and was reaching into her bag as she hummed it didn't help
Brady I have a friend who has really dark humor, he even laugh when I told him about a girl who was murder back in 2000 but he will not joke about suicide, I swear he has a weird and messed up sense of humor

"Bullet" by Hollywood Undead is a song I almost expected on this list. Its super upbeat and happy, especially for a HU song, but the lyrics are just a dude trying to decide how he should attempt suicide this time.
System Of A Down - Chop Suey Papa Roach - Last Resort The Offspring - The Kids Aren't Alright Iron Maiden - The Trooper Linkin Park - Faint Metallica - Sad But True Marilyn Manson - Disposable Teens
@@lucasgame4934 No... The pump up kicks refers to the shoes like nike etc. make that have the literal air pump shit built in them for comfort, because they were popular in the time. "All the other kids with the pumped up kicks You'd better run, better run, out run my gun All the other kids with the pumped up kicks You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet" It wasn't specified at just jocks, regardless of how you tried to argue it. nor was it just jocks that bullied the shooters of columbine.
I'd beg to differ, the first line is "Robert's Got A Quick Hand,"..neither of the kids from columbine were named Robert. But, there was a shooting at a mall in Omaha around the mid 2000s by a kid named Robert Hawkins. That'd probably more fit the bill.
10.Pumped up kicks - Foster the People 9. LDN - Lily Allen 8. Some Nights - F.U.N 7. Electric Avenue - Eddie Grant 6. Rock the Casbah - The Clash 5. You can call me Al - Simon ... 4. Which is how they also wound up with the nickname "fun dot" from some fans. And speaking of their lead singer, Nate Ruess, many of his songs are like this. They hearken back to the fact that he's from Glendale, AZ and left his duo, The Format, to move to NYC. This method of songwriting has been incredibly popular out in that desert sun for decades now. If you don't believe me, the Gin Blossoms' songs Hey Jealousy and Found Out About You are a good place to start.

13:14 "Mistaken as missiles " Sry watchmojo but thats wrong. In the German lyric it says "hielt man für UFOS aus dem all" which means spacecraft or alien ships which was the reason for the false alert
ikr. when i first heard it i thought it was a happy song and then I looked up the meaning and it said that it was about escapism and isolation and i was so confused😂
Matthew Carter it’s so fucked up that it’s even remote fear for young kids in school..I’d never even considered what it would be like in schools with this as a reality
Matthew Carter ;-; so..... they played a song about a school shooting, while in another school there was an actual shooting was happening in a school..... huh.... wait! Why is ur school playing that?! Do they not know its bout a school shooting?!
"It's alright" by Mother Mother Ok, this would not make the list because it both does and does not fit, but I want to mention it anyway. The song doesn't exactly sound like it's full of energy and happiness, but it has a bit of it. And the "it's alright" is not sarcastic, for those who guessed that. It's about coping with mental illness and forgiving yourself for things you did or said or just thought. "It's alright, it's okay, you're not a monster, just a human, and you've made a few mistakes". It also talks about the fear of finding out who you are "behind your meds", feeling lonely and lost, etc. It's just a song that's... heavier than it's cover (title? Vibe?)? If that makes sense. And I encourage anyone with mental health problems, of any kind really, to give it a listen. It's healing, trust me.
"Holiday in Cambodia" by Dead Kennedys "Bullet" by Hollywood Undead "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" by Scissor Sisters "Sloom" by Of Monsters and Men "Innocent" by Our Lady Peace Tons of songs by Reel Big Fish
Holiday by DK's isn't reeally in this class imo. Top notch song but not exactly makes one think of happy times. I mean Jello does yell "Pol Pot" over & over...
Dude I love that song. You are so right, that should literally be number 1 on this list it sounds so happy and upbeat but its about a man beating his victims to death with a silver hammer
RU-vid: HEY! You'd like this! Me: *Knowing Pumped Up Kicks will be on here* Also me: *Knows half the songs on the songs on this list cus my parents raised me on them*
"Tag you're it," by Melanie Martinez is really about a kidnapper "Oh no," by Marina and the Diamonds is really about perfectionism "Teenagers," by MCR is really about school shootings "Help," by the Beatles is actually about Depression "Holiday" by Green day is actually about war and obsession Yet the melody is energetic and upbeat
Other than "Pumped Up Kicks" who is about school shootings, there are also two more songs with a happy sounding music but with depressing and dark lyrics that I honestly love so much. The first being "Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men, who has a really energic and cheerful music, but it talks about depression, loneliness and madness manifesting in a person who lost their loved one and is slowly dying and allucinating, communicating with their lost loved one. Some of the most heartbreaking verses are, for example: "You're gone gone gone away, I watched you disappear. All that's left is a ghost of you" or "Your mind is playing tricks on you my dear". The main strength of this song is also the fact that there are two singers: the girl doing the woman slowly losing her mind and the guy being the dead husband trying to communicate with his wife. The other one is "Enola Gay" by OMD, which is one of the most iconic 80's song. Classic elettric and energic melody, that sets your mind immediately to the 80's musical background, together with songs such as "Take on Me" or "Walk of Life" or similar. This song is actually about the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, more specifically about the pilot, whose mother was called Enola, and if I'm not mistaken, the bomb or the plane was named after her. It's says it really clearly in some of the verses such as "This kiss you gave is never ever gonna fade away" and "It's 8.15, and it's the time that it's always been. We got your message on the radio, collision's normal and you're coming home" referring to the release of the bomb and the explosion and "Enola Gay, is mother proud of little boy today?", which makes obvious the reference and the real story behind the lyrics.
yknow, little talks has been one of my favorite songs for years, but i never actually looked deeper into the lyrics like that until today. the song has a whole new perspective for me now. thank u for sharing
@@darkyagami6038 you're welcome dear, it's been of my favourite songs for years and I found that out recently and I was kinda shocked about the contrast between the melody and the meaning of the lyrics. And now it's even more beautiful to listen to
When I was a kid I danced to pumped up kicks for a school competition.......................................................... Is this telling me something?
Foster the people: "You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet." Superman: *Known for being faster than a speeding bullet* "Are you challenging me?" Every other person with super speed: "You mean challenging US?"
Third Eye Blind have some of the most incredible, powerful lyrics throughout their entire catalogue. Every single album is chocked full of masterpiece after masterpiece. They've been a favorite of mine for years. Much love to those guys.
Haven't watched the vid yet, but I am hoping that Bullets by Hollywood Undead is on here. The song has a cheerful tune, but it's literally about killing youself. EDIT: Okay it's not in the vid, but it seems I'm not the only one who thought of that song.
Some suggestions: The who - Sally Simpson Spock's Beard - The 39th street blues Caparezza - Vieni a ballare in Puglia Genesis - Land of confusion MCR - Na na na na na na Righiera - Vamos a la playa
I agree too. Immediately, after I saw this comment I looked up the lyrics so I knew exactly what it said. Now I am afraid to go to school and am on the verge of crying. In my opinion, that song should have been #1
I think the selection was too based on only basic pop. Their are plenty of songs that speak about slavery and suicide that are salsa and other geners. But I guess only popular music is music lol
I wonder if the song Bullet by Hollywood Undead was even considered for this list. Sure the title is 'Bullet', but if this song were to just come on the radio, any person would start bobbing their head along to the beat before actually knowing the lyrics
the beat was happy but the lyrics are easily very depressing while most songs on this list are a bit harder to pick apart. But i think it would be like number 11 maybe.
*CORRECTION.* Pumped up Kicks is about a boy with mental illnesses, and the name Robert is rumoured to be based off of the Westroads Mall Shooting. It isn't, but Mark Foster has said it's just the thoughts of a suicidal/homicidal mentally ill teenager.
pumped up kicks is about the columbine school shooting which took place on the 4/20/19 by eric an dylan which later commited suicide by blowing there brains out in the library after killing the students which they tried to blow the school up
I'm shocked that nobody even heard about "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. It has a catchy beat, but the lyrics are pretty dark and disturbing. It's about poverty, and the lyrics are stating insane fantasies like hijacking a plane, the pre-chorus "Don't push me, I'm close to the edge, I'm trying not to lose my head" sounds like someone warning others not to put more misery to their life, because one day they'll just absolutely SNAP.
What about Rehab by Amy Winehouse? It has a great happy sounding beat with a catchy tune yet the story of the song is Amy’s saddest and most disturbing resulting in it reflecting her death.
Sergio Balaguera I know I was just saying that, because every time you asked a person what the saddest song was 5 years ago, people would usually say pumped up kicks
