There aren't many RPGs for this console like most people think, but I managed to salvage 10 games that aren't as popular as others and they might be worth your time. Visit my website: ericklandonwrit... My Patreon: / ericklandon
Terranigma was not unknown at all here in Europe, since it was one of the few RPG's that arrived here. One of the most beloved rpg's here! I still have my physical copy :P Nice and intresting video!
you all probably dont give a damn but does someone know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost my login password. I would love any help you can offer me.
@Howard Finn i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Terranigma! You should take the chance and visit Neotokyo early in the game as soon as you get access to the ship. There is a trashcan at the top somewhere that takes you to a hidden secret room with a ghost. It's a bonus content from the developer Quintet that illudes to Illusion of Gaia 2, and how they all are excited about it. As far as I know and read about the development from Tomoyoshi Miyazaki, it was planned as a spiritual successor but very early on they decided on key concepts that had to change. Travel Guides where his inspiration and he wanted to have more time to make the game he didnt had the chance on doing with Illusion of Gaia because of deadlines.
I used to play Secret of the Stars when I was a kid. I've never heard anyone ever mention it before and for a second I thought I imagined the whole thing. It's good to hear someone else played that game too!
Though I've played everything on this video and I liked literally all of them, these were my favorites: Drakken is like an ARPG, definitely an early vibes of what most know today as the NamcoBandai "Tales" series. Spike McFang is like an ARPG as well, something similar towards LoZelda ALinktothePast where you hack slash things. Robotrek 7th Saga Thanks for the giving love to these underrated games!
Dude you played 7th saga I love that game and nobody ever knows what I’m talkin about 😂. My favorite team was to start with the robot and get the demon guy later. And you are right it is totally addicting
2:38 - Terranigma IS part of the same series that Illusion of Gaia is part of, but it actually feels more like Soul Blazer, the predecessor to Illusion of Gaia since you're resurrecting the world in both games.
I liked Brain Lord and played it to completion a long time ago. Its strength has to be the puzzles. One of my favourite puzzles in the game has a tablet telling you about a secret button you have to push to open a locked door. (SPOILER start It turns out to be the left shift button on the controller that I have seen few games on the SNES actually use SPOILER end). The 7th Saga is probably one of my favourite RPGS on the SNES. I like how the combat has you balance attack and defense rather than the HULK SMASH style tactics most games allow. WARNING: open a chest in a dungeon if you want to die.
Haha, I was going to post about this when I saw Brainlord and figured I'd reply here instead. I remember it vividly, because it's one of only two times I had to resort to begging my mom to let me call the 900 number that gave you video game answers. It was three buttons on the floor to open a door. They didn't stay down after you stepped on them. The sign on the wall said "the secret is in the control pad." Which mystified the hell out of me for days. The 900 number solved it in a second. You had to press the X button on the SNES pad to open the door. Myself, and I assume many others, probably assumed the "control pad" was the three buttons on the floor and kept trying every conceivable combo of pressing them. And you never even accidentally hit the X button, because to my recollection, it did nothing in the game. That was a great puzzle. I still remember it 26 years later!
The problem was that it had a number of practically game-breaking flaws for the American audience. Otherwise, yah, it would have been amazing. I bought and played it at the time it came out, almost beat it actually, a practically impossible feat at the time
It's not the Gaia Trilogy, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma is part of the Soul Blazer Trilogy. 1. Soul Blazer. 2. Illusion of Gaia. 3. Terranigma. The biggest connections between these three games are actually through secrets in the game. There are some small easter eggs here and there that "connects" these games, but the secrets in these games gives a great connection between all three games. And yes, I know the comment is over 1 year old, but just stumbled upon this video :P
Actraiser, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma are all similar games as far as core mechanics go but as far as any of them being connected that's simply not true. Translators were the ones doing that like with the Turbo the dog thing. I guess it's no different than the translation team in the US doing Final Fantasy with Vicks and Wedge and then with a Cid in every game. Just translators being goofy.
Brain Lord was a lot of fun. I like how you get to use a bunch of different weapon types with very different styles. Also, you can shield bash enemies which was a first. Great little world with exciting sense of exploration. The dungeon puzzles were challenging and fun, but I think I would have loved to have more towns and wilderness to explore. Should have had a bigger, better sequel!
To me personally Terranigma is nothing hidden about it, as it was one of the few jrpg we got in Germany. We really don't got much jrpg, like no Chrono Trigger and even no Final Fantasy and many others never released in PAL/Germany back then. But we got Terranigma and thats why it got so much attention. I also love this game. Just can't agree on my side for hidden gem, but I know its for you. ;-) Good list.
I didn't know that about Germany. That is why having these comments makes everyone's knowledge grow. Thank you for sharing that little piece of information!
7th Saga is to this day my FAVORITE SNES game I have ever played. FF3 (6), Chrono Trigger, Lufia 2, BoF 1 & 2, all wonderful, but 7th Saga is amazing, and Soulblazer is up there too. Now to find Terranigma and Brainlord because i never heard of them but I like your tastes in games!
Another interesting and rather obscure SNES RPG is Paladin's Quest. It has a very unique setting and aesthetic. It has a sequel called Lennus II that is a lot better apparently. It's basically like comparing Lufia I to Lufia II.
I'm just now starting lennus 2 I had no idea it was paladins quest sequel. I love both the lufia games but 1 was better because I was getting sick and tired of all the puzzles in 2.
Terranigma is a superb game. I got it for present when i was 9, and since english is not my main language i never got past the introductory village 🤣. Years after i got into retro gaming and gosh i loved that title!
Super ninja boy was my first rpg for snes. I fell in love with it. The 2player co-op makes it a must play for people with someone to play with, like you said though,I trucked through it alone as a kid and made me fall in love with the genre. The beat em up elements sucked 6 year old me in.
the aspect you have to look at with the quintet quadrilogy, because its soul blazer > terranigma > illusion of gaia > granstream saga, is the world building and story telling each game represents
Let me also add five games that we were robbed of and should have gotten: 1.) Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2) 2.) Star Ocean 3.) Holy Umbrella 4.) Final Fantasy V (the one between II and III) 5.) Live-A-Live No particular order, I am just saying that you really want to play these games if you liked any of the others on this top ten. Of course, skip Holy Umbrella if you did not like Spike McFang. Even better, like Spike and play Holy Umbrella!
I own six of these and thought they were all pretty good. Different, of course, but good. The other four, meh! I was not expecting to see Paladin's Quest getting any love, but I still love it! What I was expecting was a list of nine Japan only games and one that was available in America or PAL regions, but all of these are playable on a North American Super Nintendo console, except for Terranigma, which is available anyway as a home brew, and you should DEFINITELY get a copy and play it, a lot more than those four games I do not have.
>Ys 3 in the list I'm shedding some tears of joy right now, thanks for making my day. c': Btw, it's hard because of the fucked up hitboxes, that's the only thing wrong of the SNES version, I'd recommend playing the TurboGrafx CD version for the best experience but the SNES version it's still great, after all, expect anything from Falcom to be pure gold.
Wow Nice list, nice hunt! lol , I have never heard of 5 - The Twisted Tale of Spike McFang, superninjaboy or robotrek, Nice addition! Thanks man. By the way I also loved Terranigma, 7sagat and Dragon View
Personally I really enjoyed the original Drakkhen. From the research I have done it was the first 3D Open-world RPG with real time combat. It is arguably the first game in the vein of Elder Scrolls. The gameplay felt like a mix of Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age but in the SNES era, which sort of intrigues me personally. I have been looking for a copy of Dragon View for a few years now, but still haven't been able to find it. Here's hoping that series gets modernized!
Great list I love soul blazer good to see brain Lord on here totally underrated. You should have elaborated on the extremely difficult late game puzzles which will annoy most players.
If you speak to the chicken in the town with Quintet HQ (after civilisation has become modern), he tells you Terranigma was originally going to be called Illusion of Gaia 2. Definitely part of the series.
7th Saga...more like 7 layers of hell for the difficulty. That said, there's a sequel for it. Look up Mystic Ark. It wasn't released out of Japan and the English translation was going to be under 7th Saga II before it was canceled. Graphically beautiful on the SNES too. I haven't played Mystic Ark (I'm sure there's a fan translation out there somewhere), but considering how hard the original is, I'd only recommend it to the most die hard JPRG fans.
I never could beat soulblazer when I was younger. The boss battles were a nightmare. I always wished spike mcfang were a longer game. Loved that game & was easy if you just stockpiled lots of cards for the bosses. Good times.
I have played quite a bit of the games you mentioned in your videos. Super Ninja Boy and Spike McFang are definitely hidden gems. You Sir are a True Rpg Fanatic! You have my subscription now =)
It shall be noted that Terranigma wasn't released in North America at all, which is probably the reason why it's unknown overthere rather than in Europe and Australia.
It's known. I remember seeing it in gaming mags but yes there wasn't ever a NTSC release. So it was later with emulation that many people first got to play it. I think it was because of the idiotic policy that Nintendo had in the US with the religious symbols and themes in games. So Enix didn't want to bother with dealing with it in that market.
Oh I remember 7th Saga and like you said many people recommend the knight. Which would be the best option to start with right? But that was the exact reason why I went with Esuna instead. If someone thinks the beginning of this game is hard wait until you play one of the mages.
I've been playing Secret of the Stars. Turns out that having two parties also means you have to grind out money/XP to gear them and level them up TWICE. I'm not sure if this was thought out all the way through.
Whew. Finally beat Secret of the Stars. In retrospect, it wasn't SUPER hard, but it was a little tedious sometimes and I can easily imagine someone screwing themselves over because of some items being rare drops.
Brain lord art style looks alot like the 7th Saga, i bet Brain lord isn't hard as balls though..... I probably spent most of my 13th year in life grinding that game
Funny story about 7th Saga: I once decided to use cheats to have infinite HP to lvl up just standing outside town, left it with turbo on the A button and toggled the speed up on an emulator. Cool, max level (I think) right at the start of the game, demolishing everything that dared show the face in front of me and was cracking up about it. That at some point we have to fight one of the other characters we can choose as main and for what I saw people talking their stats are scaled based on our lvl. It was a single hit kill on my ass regardless of whatever I could think about doing to reduce damage taken 😂
I totally agree with you on putting Super Mario RPG and Final Fantasy III over Chrono Trigger, and I also agree with putting Breath Of Fire 1 over 2. But one thing that really shocked me is the lack of Earthbound on this list. Out of all the RPGs on the SNES it is easily my favorite, in fact, It's my favorite game on the console. The main reason as to why is because there are a lot of mature emotional themes and subjects that the game tackles that are not usually touched on in RPGs. For example the Ness never sees father because he is always at work, next door neighbor is a narsisistic manipulator who becomes upsessed with superficial things, and the psychology of said charecters, as Pokey appears to have abusive parents. There are also parts of the story that are extremely atmospheric and intense, such as when Prince Poo is training in the art of meditation and has to agree to have his limbs torn off, and lastly the Final Boss, which felt like a 4th wall breaking mindfuck in which faith is the only thing to see you through it. The amazing part about how the game tackles these subjects is that many of these elements are slid under the radar of the audience as they are mixed with and sometimes disguised as something cartoony and whimsical. In part, I think the graphics are cartoony to reflect the perception of the charecters, who are only kids after all. I also really appreciate the game's sense of humor which ranges from poignant satire and parody of pop culture, Americana, and of course JRPGs themselves as well as simple quirky charm. You can tell that the developers went really out of their way to make many of the game's elements extremely creative. A lot of love went into everything from the vast array of Psychedelic looking backgrounds, the plethora of unique battle themes, the quirky references, bizarre enemy and character designs, and of course the entire soundtrack which includes a lot of live samples that are not stock sounds from the SNES soundchip. Anyway, I agree with your taste on a lot of RPGs, I feel like you make a lot of good points, but I'm curious about your opinion on Earthbound and Mother 3, as they are some of the best RPGs I have played along with the Suikoden and Shin Megami Tensei games. Keep up the good work and let us know about the Mother series! Peace
Thank you. You shouldn't be shocked just because I didn't put a game you love, haha, it's my top 10, therefore my opinion, remember that. But the truth is that I haven't played Mother 3 so I know nothing about it. Now, Earthbound is a great game for many, many people, but I have to confess that I didn't like it one bit. Tried it two different times in my life and nope, I just don't like it, sorry.
Erick Landon RPG Word, it’s not for everybody, it’s just one of those games I expect to see. I feel you on some opinions though, like skies of Arcadia being overrated. I don’t see why it’s so loved and I also stopped playing it during the point where the world map opens up and I get into a battle every few seconds and don’t know where the fuck to go! I thought it was pretty mediocre
I keep hearing about 7th saga. What made it so difficult? I missed that title back in the 90s. I was more a secret of mana/ff3 snes kinda guy. I dond mind games where you need to grind, but im guessing thats not what made it hard. Any idea?
From what I can remember playing it as a kid, the battles are very unforgiving & the dungeons hard to figure out. I never made it very far in this game for those reasons. Even leaving the town at the start of the game and fighting your first few battles is difficult. Pretty sure it would be easy to beat with a walk through nowadays.
The game starts with enemies that have pretty high stats for low levels, and so you think, that's because i'm weak right now, so you grind a bit and the game becomes easier, but that's only until you enter a new area and learns that as long as you progress with the game, all enemies are almost as strong as you. This is the one game in which you don't overlevel to make the game easy, you overlevel to make the game normal.
Godammit you have a weird taste :p Also I think all these where translated into english all the way back when I started emulating snes games on my 266Mhz macintosh computer in the late 90s. Ninja boy is the only game on this list I haven't played. The only game of all these that I actually enjoyed was Robotrek. Other than that I think I played all RPGs from that time that was translated into english. I remember that I followed the translation of tales of phantasia from DeJap and downloaded the patch every time it was updated so I could play just a little longer between every released patch. :p The only games I gave up on was the RTS RPGs... Never been a fan of those.
