I love how you played "Bullet" for Walk Among Us, despite it not being on that album, and you showed footage of the Misfits performing with Graves on vocals, even though he joined the band over a decade after that album.

Honestly, "Punk" can be defined as and mean something different to each generation. Obviously, the originators and pioneers deserve to be on this list. But, some later bands (like Green Day) deserve to be on here, too. Like most things in life-- Punk expanded and became more vast, less straight ahead, and somewhat of an umbrella term with many sub-genres: including Pop-Punk. The Ramones and The Clash had some poppy as hell melodies... Yet I constantly see people preaching how bands like them are "true punk." What exactly constitutes as "true punk"? Attitude? Lyrical content? A "heavy/fast-paced/raw" sound? Playing hole-in-the-wall venues for no pay and being anti-establishment? Or is it just a lifestyle and a mindset? A place of belonging? Everyones definition varies, therefore many different bands could technically fall under the genre. These arguments are a waste of time. As for me, Green Day spoke for their generation.. and ANOTHER generation after that. They were so many peoples first exposure to the genre. Whether or not they're "punk" to you doesn't matter. They're punk to someone else. Not to mention they've already been around for nearly 30 years. They've made their mark. Aside from GD, you people whining about how "______ is NOT punk!1!! Any band after 1990 aren't punk!!!1!! LOL shitty sell outs!!!!!!!" about literally any band that falls between 1990-2005 seriously have to get over it. You sound like bitter and immature elitists - It's predictable, exhausting, and way past getting old.
@omgvague
@omgvague 8 лет назад
+Brittany Butler Well said. Epitaph's website lists bands like Bad Religion, Descendents, Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, etc in their artists list as well as Green Day. So we have a major record label (a big punk no-no) with a bunch of popular bands (popularity is another big punk no-no to these elitists) however Green Day is the only one that gets shit for it.

+Brittany Butler NO THEY DONT--YOUR YOUNG....PUNK IS A MOMENT IN TIME THAT IS DEAD AND CANNON BE LIVED TWICE-EITHER YOU WERE THERE OR YOUR JUST ACTING LIKE WHAT YOU THINK A PUNK IS OR WAS......SOCIETY IS DIFFERENT TODAY.IT WAS A FEELING IN TIME JUST AS THE HIPPIES WERE A FEELING IN THE 60'S...SORRY TO BURST PEOPLES BUBBLES BUT IF YOU ARE POST 1988,YOU MISSED PUNK
@brittanybutlermusic
@brittanybutlermusic 8 лет назад
+Kevin Cannon The initial movement and the actual music genre are now two different things. Clearly, if you didn't live when Punk was first happening... Yeah, "you missed punk." But, that doesn't mean the feeling and spirit wasn't reignited in a way that related to kids of a later generation through Pop-Punk. Let me tell you, that music has made just as much of an impact on us. And as a generation of young adults today, we're forever hooked on what it made us feel. It never leaves you. It was our place of belonging. That is one thing we have in common. That sense of community is something so unique to the genre. The Late 90s/Early 2000s was it's own thing. There are already kids from this current generation saying they wished they lived through it. For those of us who were there for it and related - it can't be relived either, my friend. It was magic for us. Just because you didn't experience it like we did or understand what it was like.. Doesn't mean you have the right to look down upon later manifestations of the genre. As you said, society is different. But, it's all linked back to the beginnings.

The problem with lists like this is that it is never possible to truly nail down where a genre label like 'punk' begins and ends , and what is best or most important is totally subjective by nature . +UFConVHS But that resurgence did not start with Greenday or the Offspring, it started with Bad Religion and Dead Kennedys. Even though they had both been around since the early 80s they both released albums in the late 80s that reinvigorated the punk scene. There would be no Greenday without Bad Religion, which is why I think that people are pissed. Greenday may have made a punk-esk music mainstream, but for punk audiences it is Bad Religion that started the come-back of punk.
@GeordieHandle
@GeordieHandle 8 лет назад
samlfb what do you mean resurgence? there where massive scenes all through the 80s, just underground and unheard of. i love both these bands but the idea that they had an impact on punk is silly. your right imo about bad religion, but that just proves my point. any way Nirvana broke punk back to the mainstream in the 90s, you wouldn't call them punk though would you and put them on this list. really the only reason green day and the offspring got big in the 90s, was because of Nirvana.

It's hard to take the list seriously as it sounds like the narrator stumbled on to these bands FAR after the fact and tried to pass off like they were into the scene.
