Excellent point! Many people seem to be overlooking that this list contains albums that were important in rock HISTORY; thus, they should have the distinction of breaking new ground--charting completely new musical territory--in addition to being incredibly great albums in their own right. Further, they need not have necessarily been the most popular at the time of their release; widely influential albums often aren't. Therefore, I can't BELIEVE VU & Nico wasn't on there. Or The Stooges for that matter. I'd kick off Radiohead and Pink Floyd and replace them with the ones I noted.

Definitely agree that Dark Side and Sgt. Pepper are absolutely 1 & 2. You mentioned The White Album and Abbey Road from The Beatles and The Wall from Pink Floyd, and rightly so, but Wish You Were Here and Revolver both deserve a mention as well. For me the 1 really glaring miss is Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

We could all literally argue about the top 10 most influential rock albums until the cows come home but I think that anyone who does not see that Sgt. Pepper is undoubtedly the most influential rock album of all time is crazy. It literally changed music history forever. Out of every influential album there is, that one’s impact is felt to this very day. However, I do agree that not including Velvet Underground & Nico is also insane. Should be at least an honorable mention. I mean, the album artwork is a literal banana and yet it is one of the most recognizable album covers in the world. The influence and impact is massive.

William Magee, depends on what you consider rock music to be. I would agree that Pet Sounds is definitely pop-esque. But for that matter Bob Dylan is more folk than rock and Sabbath is more metal than rock and even The Beatles are more experimental pop than rock, but I don’t think that the impact on the genre of rock, as a whole can be disputed to a great extent here. I don’t particularly even enjoy the Beach Boys, but Pet Sounds was a landmark album in Pop/Rock.

Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967, The Beatles) 2.Pet Sounds (1966, The Beach Boys) 3.Are You Experienced (1967, The Jimi Hendrix Experience) 4.Led Zeppelin IV ( 1971, Led Zeppelin) 5.Highway 61 revisited (1965, Bob Dylan) 6.The Dark Side of the Moon (1973, Pink Floyd) 7.Exile on Main Street (1972, The Rolling Stones) 8.The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967, The Velvet Underground) 9.London Calling (1979, The Clash) 10.Rumours (1977, Fleetwood Mac) The one album per artist rule applies here

Yes, there were albums in the 20s on, that is how they got the name "albums" as multi-page hardbound books like photo albums, hence the name. A 78 rpm disk held a max 4minutes of music per side. Most 78s were 3.5 minutes. Later, 45 rpm with tighter groove density added time but the LP with, variable track width cutting lathes allowed microgroove and diamond stylus extended time to 23 to 30 minutes depending on the level of bass frequencies recorded. The word Album referred to how it was packaged, and not the record disc itself. Johnson was recording in the 20s so his work was available in albums.

@@stanspb763 You are right of course. I knew this, sort of - my Dad had many 78s in albums. And they were like photo albums.

Best is Selling England by the Pound, second Foxtrot and then Wind and Wuthering maybe. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a good album for sure, but I feel like at that point Genesis had kind of become Peter and band, which really wasn't all that healthy.

@@Babyboss65 Wellll, let me tell YOU a thing or two. Those albums are good, too. I knew a guy that owned a record store in the mid to late 70's who had an album collection that was on shelving units in every room except bathroom and kitchen and HE would disagree. In fact he had it on his one of top albums of any band. It is a them album, like an opera, so I guess ya gotta be into that Wagnerian groove. Peace, Ciao : )
