With only 8% of nearly 80,000 Indian startups raising venture capital funding, bootstrapping plays an important role in the growth of an early-stage startup.
But can bootstrapped startups scale as quickly as VC-funded companies, can they become profitable, can bootstrapping create startup giants?
The answer to all these questions is a resounding yes.
Today, we will take a look at Top 10 Indian startups that bootstrapped their way to success.
00:00 Introduction
02:54 #10 MyOperator: Founded by Ankit Jain and Pratik Jain in 2010, MyOperator offers office IVR solution enabling businesses to ease the process of customer communication by offering features like automated call routing, call monitoring and easy CRM integration.
03:54 #09 Wingify: Founded by Paras Chopra in 2010, Wingify uses its flagship Visual Website Optimiser platform to help its clients to understand the needs of their customers by testing new features, providing insights into customer behaviour and automating marketing campaigns to boost sales and revenues.
05:16 #08 Great Learning: Founded by Mohan Lakhamraju, along with Hari Krishnan Nair and Arjun Nair in 2013, Great Learning offers a technology platform that helps working professionals and students to upskill in emerging technologies like Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing and Cybersecurity.
06:10 #07 Quick Heal Technologies: Founded by Kailash and Sanjay Katkar in 1995, Quick Heal started as a computer service centre which was later transformed into a full-blown IT solutions provider by 2007. The company was completely bootstrapped for 15 years before it raised funds from Sequoia Capital in 2010 and went public in 2016.
08:44 #06 Kayako: Founded by Varun Shoor in the small city of Jalandhar, Punjab in 2001, Kayako offers customer service and helpdesk management software. The startup was successfully bootstrapped by Varun until it was acquired by ESW Capital in 2018. Today, Kayako has more than 1,31,000 customers across the world.
09:58 #05 FusionCharts: Founded by Pallav Nadhani from his bedroom in Kolkata in 2002, FusionCharts is a data visualisation company that offers comprehensive JavaScript charting solutions. This bootstrapped startup has more than 28,000 customers including 85% of the fortune 500 companies like Google, Microsoft and Facebook.
11:15 #4 Kaleyra: Founded by Aniketh Jain and Ashish Agarwal, Kaleyra is a have cloud-based communications startup that connects businesses with their customers through its omnichannel communications platform. The founders started their company called Solutions Infini with INR 4 lakh to sell their college management software in 2009. However, they failed to make any sales. In order to make ends meet, the founders decided to make software for other companies. They soon transformed their bootstrapped startup into a SaaS company. The company was later merged with Italy-based Uniquity in 2016 to become Kaleyra.
13:05 #3 Zerodha: Founded by Nithin and Nikhil Kamath in 2010, Zerodha is India's largest stockbroking platform simplifying investment for traders and investors. The startup recently became a unicorn, making it one of the rare bootstrapped and profitable companies to join the club. Zerodha has nearly one million daily active users on its platform that is supported by a merely 30 member tech team. During the FY19, Zerodha raked in INR 850 crore in revenue while registering a net profit of INR 250 crore.
14:09 Directi: Founded by Bhavin and Divyank Turakhia in 1998, Directi started selling website hosting space and domain names by getting a loan of INR 25,000 rupees from their parents. With the booming dot-com business and only a few companies offering these services at the time, they were able to get back their initial investment of 25,000 rupees in the first month of their operations. Today, Directi has emerged as a tech giant enabling Bhavin and Divyank to add new companies to Directi’s portfolio including Flock, Radix and Zeta. In 2016, the brothers sold their company Media.Net for a massive $900 million.
15:39 Zoho: Founded by Sridhar Vembu in 1996, Zoho started its business by offering network management software to networking companies and at the time the company was actually called AdventNet. This bootstrapped startup managed to generate revenues worth $10 million by 2000. However, after the dot-com crash in 2001, Zoho lost most of its clients. Later in 2005, Zoho entered the cloud business with its product Zoho CRM and named the company Zoho in 2009. Today, Zoho offers a suite of over 40 productivity, IT support and sales products to over 3,00,000 customers across the globe.

Loved the Chicken and Egg analogy. I think it's because 90% startups fail, investors are reluctant to invest in them and not the other way round. Because success of startup largely depends on the innovation and management skills of the founders rather than funding. "Bada business paiso se nahi, ek bade idea se bada hota hai"😄
@backstagewithmillionaires

Hi Payas, thanks! 🐔🥚 I am leaning towards your point of view. There are many entrepreneurs, but very few skilled entrepreneurs, and even fewer lucky entrepreneurs. My guess is that even if the amount of money that VCs were investing doubled or tripled overnight, the number of failing startups would stay at 90% because like you said, the success of a startup depends far more on the competency and skill of the person at its helm, and I would add also on quite a bit of luck, than on how much money the startup has at its disposal. ₹10,000 and ₹1 lakh are worth the same in the hands of someone who doesn't know what they are doing and doesn't have luck on their side. -Caleb

(Appreciate the stories.) Non-indian person here, being interested in startups, but haven't gotten up my arse right now. I'm learning Mandarin right now for potential business with Singapore, HK, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, etc. But, I might be interested in India, as it seems less dubious than China, for obvious reasons. Since bootstrapping is probably the last option for me, I'll see how I can make international relationships in Asia.

Hey Caleb, Thanks for all the quality information about the Indian startup ecosystem. Love your channel. Not a lot of youTube channels cover such a quality content, especially not in English. Your channel is a god-sent for a non-hindi speakers like me. A couple of my like-minded friends are already your subscribers just for this particular reason :) I have a constructive feedback though - A lot of your contents lately are mostly on weekly news & Top 10 lists, I would love to see more specific content though - something like your older videos on Flipkart, Oyo. I understand it might involve a lot of time for such high quality videos but may be making a specific, in-depth explainer video ( maybe on one of other India's unicorns, to begin with ) without any infographic could be a lot easier to make and more enjoyable for the viewers at the same time.

Hi Anand, I'm so happy to hear that you and your friends are enjoying these videos! Thank you for being subscribed for the last two months, and for your valuable feedback. The OYO video did extremely well and the Flipkart video was no slouch either; we were very happy with how it performed. But you hit the nail on the head with your guess: the amount of time required for those scripts and for the visuals is significantly longer. That being said, we do plan on releasing more videos in this style in the future, they're just taking us a bit longer to get to, so stay tuned and again, thank you for supporting our channel with your views, likes, and comments 😄 it's great to have you here. -Caleb

I love it that you can now legally include a "CNBC Awaaz" clip in a youtube video nowadays. The startup and tech shows at Awaaz, CNN and CNBC were pushed along by me and Abhimanyu Radhakrishan at Network 18. And almost zero evidence of that survives today on youtube.
@backstagewithmillionaires
@backstagewithmillionaires 2 года назад
Hi Varun, this actually isn't a decision we would make today - CNBC Awaaz, if they cared, could probably copyright claim this video and get it taken down. So I wouldn't describe our usage of the clip as 100% lawful. We were taking more risks back when we uploaded this video (we were also earning significantly less per video than we are now, so there was less at stake, financially), but after actually getting a copyright strike once from someone who wasn't happy that we had used their video, we decided to avoid using copyrighted videos unless absolutely necessary, and also with proper on-screen sourcing. -Caleb

Can you explain what is SAAS?
@backstagewithmillionaires
@backstagewithmillionaires 3 года назад
Hi Raj, Caleb here. Of course, happy to explain! SaaS is an acronym for software as a service. In the past, software was sold as a standalone product, initially on floppy disks but then later on CD-ROMs and then online. As an example, a new version of Photoshop used to be sold by Adobe every couple of years: you had Adobe Photoshop CS, CS2, CS3, all the way until CS6. If you owned CS2 and you wanted to upgrade to CS3, you would need to pay in full for CS3. Adobe didn't care that you already payed for CS2, just like Apple doesn't care if you already own an iPhone 10 and you want to upgrade to an iPhone 11. You must pay fully for the iPhone 11 because both the iPhone 10 and iPhone 11 are standalone products. Then, in 2013, Adobe switched over to a SaaS model, where you pay a monthly subscription fee in exchange for access to their software. If you stop paying, you lose access to the software. As a result, Adobe's software went from being a very expensive product which you had to pay for each new version of, to being a service which you only needed to pay a small subscription fee to access! I hope that that made sense and was helpful. I am thinking about a new type of restaurants : eating-spots, in eating-spots, food keeps changing, chefs also rotate, this is opposed to current restaurants, thanks to this rotation of food and chefs, eating-spots are way more powerful than restaurants, along with that, there is an app, people vote for the food that will be cooked in the next days, menu is influenced by the live input of the people via an app.
