a couple of cleaning wipes in case you need to fix something and get your hands clean or you go somewhere and touch something that isn't exactly up to health code. A couple of the small packet ones work well One item I keep in my tool kit is a tire valve adapter, a Presta to Schrader valve just in case that way I can use a Service Station air hose. when I can find one that works😆 or find a auto repair place and ask to use their air, most will let you or even help you out.

When mountain biking I brought a chain break and master link in my saddle bag. Broke a couple of chains to learn that lesson.

I'm old (74) and have been cycling more or less continuously at various levels of seriousness for over 50 years. Several years ago I got a shop stand similar to the Park in the vid, and it has made all the difference in the world. As an older person, I now view it as essential, because I can bring the work to myself rather than having to sit, squat, kneel, bend, contort and curse. It wasn't exactly cheap, but worth every penny.

I would suggest a tool bottle for carrying spares on a short ride when two bottles aren't needed. I think it's a clean and elegant solution. If I'm going on a longer ride where I'd want two bottles, I'll just move the contents of the tool bottle to a small saddlebag. My $0.02

I would also like to add that cyclist should always have both front and rear lights on their bicycles. You never know when you will be entering a fog or being caught out after dark. I crashed into a creek one night because I had no headlight. Be seen, be safe.

And this is going to sound crazy but I swear I learned it from bike mechanics: Old English furniture polish in almond scent. After you clean your bike, coat a bit of the frame with it. Helps the paint shed dirt, gives it a great shine, and it smells really freaking good.

A turbo trainer can be used as a repair stand as well. obviously not height adjustable,but it holds i in place. Plus a small pack of wet wipes is essential. For me, cycling cap is a must have. In the rain, I feel fine riding without rain jacket (if I forget to bring mine), but cycling cap really helps keeping those rain drops away from your eyes, because your cycling glasses may get foggy in the rain, or even worse, water dropping from your forehead or helmet down to your eyes is really annoying

I started with normal running shoes and shorts. I rode a few times and got proper shoes and pedals. I rode a few more times and got bib shorts and a jersey. It can be very overwhelming with all the gear available but definitely shoes+pedals and bib shorts+jersey (and helmet obviously) if you ride on a regular basis.

I also carry a valve extender in case I have the wrong tube or need to borrow one that has the wrong valve length. Around that extender I also have a piece of silcon tape. I also bring a quick link, valve core tool, and for Si, a couple of zip ties. All easy things to store in your pack or pocket.

I'm a big fan of a frame bag. Several of my bikes have them, and I really like the one I sewed up for my road bike (fits like a glove). I prefer it to using a saddle bag and bottle cages for my junk show. For a longer rides (3+ hours) I a top tube bag for easy snack access.

1:20 spare tube for tubeless. A few months ago I went tubeless against my better judgement and of course my rear tire had a catastrophic failure to where only a tube would’ve helped me. Walked while pushing my bike 10 miles back to my car. Same day I went out and got two new road tires with tubes and 1 extra tube in my pack. Lesson learned.
@iammarkstewart
@iammarkstewart Год назад
Definitely not sold on road tubeless...huge roadside mess if you have to repair with a tube, if you are even carrying one. Still running tubes in my mtbs too, same reason. With mtb, even worse if you're running an insert and need to conduct a tube repair trailside. Don't forget to count the cost of trashed road cleats after the walk back.
@ebmike8
@ebmike8 Год назад
@@iammarkstewart Completely Agree. The interesting part was that plenty of road cyclists stopped to try and help but because I was running wider gravel tries (was wearing them out from training before I replaced them with roads) their tubes wouldn't have fit. What made it funnier was that a whole lot of them said "that's the reason I switched back to tubed". Even my coworker who's a tri-althelte contestant and even trains others for tris mentioned her and her husband both swapped to tubed after that had happened to them as well lol. Luckily I had not made the switch to clipless at the time (I switched to clipless that same day when I got my two new tires and tubes) so i was walking back in my nikes lol.

I especially agree with the advice to get a bike stand; that thing has paid for itself many times over. Pro tip: If you're not really good at DIY, just fork over the $200 and buy a proper bike stand rather than trying to make one yourself; it's probably less expensive that way, and it will be easier to deal with.

Use my track pump before every ride to set tire pressure right where I want it. My saddle bag never leaves my bike with puncture kit(with spare valve core and chain link), tube, multi tool(has built in tire levers), spare battery for sensors, and a $20 bill. Mini pump attached to one of my bottle cages. I also replace my park tool puncture kit each year and keep my tube in the box to stop friction from putting a hole in my new tube. For really long rides I carry a battery bank to top up my phone. Just in case as so far I’ve been too cheap to buy a bike computer for navigating.

I have a frame pump and lights permanently attached, and a bike lock that I take with me if I cycle to work or the shops. My buddy carries a spare gear cable and brake cable and a bike spanner, and a zip-lok plastic bag for his phone if it rains. I am lucky that I live in a tropical climate, so rain is not the end of the world, but I can see that a rain jacket would be for good days when it rains, not for going out cycling in the rain. One 'trick' I picked up from a seasoned mechanic was to make sure the bead of the tire was 'deep into the rim' at the bottom, (away from where you eventually wind up with your thumbs). Frequently ensuring both beads were deeply seated and gradually coaxing the extra bead at the top helped with even the cantankerous tires.

I use a tire lever to get the tire off the rim, but always use a "tire jack" to get it re-mounted. Regardless of how careful I am, using a lever to get the tire back on those last few inches damages the new tube about 50% of the time. A tire jack is lightweight, fits easily in a back pocket, and works supremely well - no more sore thumbs!

I can attest from my shop experience that with practice, almost every (road) tire is mountable without any tool. It's mostly technique, and the practice. In fact, Shimano carbon wheels are mandated tool-less, and I've both removed tires and mounted tires on them with no tools. Mtb tires on the other hand...good luck with 26" Maxxis DH or DD casings. Sometimes 2 people and a metal tire spoon.

However, I've learned my lesson, when going any longer than that, on new roads or into more remote regions, I'll fit my saddlebag with a spare tube and CO2. Imagine owning a really expensive aero bike and doing whatever you want because you paid for it.

I wasn't counting but I'm sure you had more than ten! I would add a mobile phone and a bit of cash for emergencies. You're miles from anywhere and just ridden over a load of thorns, or a pothole just broke a wheel or you just crashed and broke a bit of you. Or you just over did it and need rescue. A note of caution, Fairy liquid or other washing up product contains salt as a water softener (helps with the bubbles). Salt leads to corrosion. Car shampoos (or caraven versions) do not contain salt so will be better.

I'm an all-weather rider but I live down in the hot tropics and rain jacket may or may not be of help due to the heat even if it's raining hard. It may help prevent catching colds in the rain but the heat would be unbearable. Been there, done that and now I never wear rain jacket even if it's raining so definitely not on my kit.

Build your own work stand, yes if live in the wilds of Wales or a member of the A Team, no if you live in a fifth floor flat.

Does GCN have a "how to clean your bike" video? I know this sounds basic but I'd hate to wreck something by doing it wrong.

Anyone know why some Presta valves are threaded all the way along ? Don't know why I haven't asked before but surely that's just a way to ruin the seals on your pump as the threads erode the material ?

Padded pants are so you are not sitting on a sem that will become very noticeable on long rides.
