ehhh i'd disagree on PJ being 'decent' it took the idea of a M&LxPM crossover and went nowhere interesting with it, wasted it on main series references pretty much. There was opportunity to have references to all the unique characters not found anywhere else but these two series, but they opted for the most sterile by-the-books Mario stuff ever. Sticker Star is still worse IMO, but Paper Jam had more wasted potential. Neither are good Mario RPGs imo.
RPG gets to much credit. Yes it's a good game, but Paper Mario and Thousand Year Door built upon that formula and improved it like any good game should. I feel like RPG being number 1 is actually more of a nostalgia thing than an actual "People think it better" thing, because I've only ever heard people put Thousand Year Door as number one (As I myself also do if it wasn't obvious)
Axem Red Alawadhi 1. Paper Mario 2. You have zero right to criticize someone as a "fan" when you're doing the exact same thing yourself. 3. When I say something is objectivity better I don't mean because it's by my own opinion, rather it's leaps and bounds ahead in every category of design. I fucking love Majora's Mask and it's my favorite Zelda game but in terms of design I'd never say it's the "best" Zelda game. It's the same thing here, I like RPG, but EVERY other Mario RPG has done so much more to advance on the formula that the game itself just can't hold up as well when compared to the other Mario RPG's (Aside from Sticker Star and Paper Jam which are abominations). Yes I like it as a fan, but I'm not petty enough to let that decide my opinion on whether it's objectionably better in terms of design for anything.
I think you might be onto something, and this is coming from someone who played Mario RPG back in 97. I loved it then and I still love it now but I'm not convinced it's the absolute best. That's ok though because even if that is the case the game is a near perfect classic.
I may be a bit late on this but I totally agree. Ive noticed with Watch Mojo and their top tens they always put the old classics as number one. Just because something started something and is a classic doesn't make it the best or good. Mario RPG is great but its definitely not better than some of the games on this list. There's better and more refined gameplay and story on a couple of the games on this list than Mario RPG.

that's relatively easy over that sneezing challenge that's way harder but this is one of the best games of the series I realy love the 3 last games out that M&L series

My List: 10 - Sticker star 9 - Paper Jam 8 - Dream Team 7 - Partners in Time 6- Super Paper Mario 5 - Paper Mario 4 - Mario RPG (never actually played that one) 3 - Superstar saga 2 - Thousand Year Door 1 - Bowsers inside story From a gameplay, humor, and mechanical viewpoint, SS, Ttyd and BiS are the best games. All of them have a solid, interactive combat system but they don't take themselves too seriously. I've never played Mario RPG so I put it in an open spot in the list. Paper Mario and Super paper Mario came up next because I felt that the games could've done more with what they had. Paper Mario was great, but its successor did everything that it did better. Leveling up in Super Paper Mario was almost pointless, as all you needed was platforming skill to beat all the bosses. Next up comes PiT, DT, and PJ. These games all had great potential, with upgraded graphics and memory, but they still couldn't live up to their predecessors. Partners in time had a compelling narrative...
But I often found my self missing inputs because I couldn't remember to press X for baby Mario or A for adult Mario. Dream team had a good plot, but I never truly felt invested in any of the character besides Mario, luigi, Toadsworth and peach. Paper Jam was fun, but it felt as though they were filling holes in gameplay with toad missions. I would've much preferred if it was not such a major part of the game, as it takes you out of the action to do a mundane task. As for Sticker Star, it is the most disgusting piece of garbage that has every popped out of Nintendo. I had high hopes for this game, hopes that were immediately dashed after the first few minutes of gameplay. The game didn't measure me by my skill in action commands, or when to use a special move. The game instead used an absolutely awful combat system where Mario forgets how to jump if he doesn't have an adhesive coated piece of plastic with a boot on it. Once you ran out of stickers you would have to backtrack a painfully
+ThE dUdE long distance just to get another 3 minutes into the plot (which was almost non existent). Therefore I believe I am right to place this atrocity to Nintendo's record at the number ten place, and even call this game one of Nintendo's worst. Basically the same, but swapping SMRPG and PM, and moving PiT up by about 3 slots. I honestly don't get why PiT is so unloved, comparatively. It's a stellar game
turiqwalrus I agree the story was stellar, but I can't say the same about the gameplay. Even when you grind, all enemies are difficult to beat, and the idea about having to buy certain bros attacks rather than using syrup jars was more than a bit unbalanced.
Super paper mario wii is my favorite mario/wii game... It is alsothe only game i have ever played on this list. Well theres also dream team and partners in time and nevermind.
Me too, TTYD is amazing. Also, was anyone else legitimately shitting themselves when they had to fight a possessed Peach? That was one of the scariest parts of my childhood in video games... Seriously!
M&L Dream Team never gets the credit it deserves. It's soundtrack alone was the best the series ever produced. I do agree that the antagonist fell flat.

The babies are also annoying.) 8.Paper Mario (Creative gameplay,good locations,TMNT reference.) 7.Legend Of The Seven Stars (Great story,good bosses,but feels old. But it's good.) 6.TTYD (Don't get angry at me,please! Average storyline,good villains,cool gameplay,but there are some really frustrating parts like The Shadow Queen and Bonetail.) 5.Paper Jam (Good attacks,good gameplay,good everything. Also brings enemies from the platformers into a RPG. 4.Bowser's Inside Story (Again,don't get angry! It's cool playing as Bowser,and the storyline is awesome. Peach doesn't play a leading role which is good,also it has Fawful and it's the first Mario RPG with giant battles.) 3.Dream Team (Antasma is cool,the storyline too,it has funny moments and cool gameplay,one of the most creative videogames ever,also Popple returns!) 2.Super Paper Mario (It's not an actual RPG,but the storyline is perfect and you can flip between 2D and 3D,really creative,full of secrets and cool moments and locations.) 1.Superstar Saga (My favourite Mario game. It has an awesome storyline,a lot of imagination was used to make it,it is maybe the funniest Mario game and it's like the story changes at every different location.)

I’ve always loved Mario’s platforming roots, so super paper Mario is the one that has always grabbed my interest. I think the real reason it’s my favorite though is because of the interesting gimmick and the sympathetic main villain. However TTYD is absolutely outstanding, especially for RPG fans as myself. Dream team has a really interesting concept, but I’ve always been more of a Superstar Saga guy

Shoo hoo I'm not sure if I agree... It did amaze me several times but it dragged out at times like in the dream worlds but dat soundtrack, OOOH MAN, the best one in the series! But Bowser's Inside Story seems...... kinda perfect? Ugh, idk
but only the original Mario RPG was ranked higher, i hardly consider that opinion invalid or outdated, i know i must sound like a total fanboy, but honestly SMRPG has withstood the test of time beautifully, the graphics sound and gameplay are still plenty enjoyable.
I LOVED playing Mario and Luigi Dream Team, it’s my favorite Mario RPG game that I’ve played. I think the 3 main things I loved most about the game were: 1.) The Music 2.) The Luiginoids 3.) Going around and gathering all the collectibles, such as beans, puzzle pieces, and the Pi’illo folk.
Superstar Saga is hand down the best game. Although Mario RPG was a great frame of for Mario RPG, Superstar Saga lad the foundation for the rest of the game. Honestly, they need to make a enhance Mario RPG, Thousands Door, and Superstar Saga all in one game. Change nothing and it will do amazing.

Yeah true bowser's inside story is a very good game and probably my second fav but for me partners of time tops it. I don't really like the paper Mario games tho

But Dream Team was way too dragged out and left me unenthusiastic sometimes, and Paper Jam was fun but was missing that good story component that the others had. I hope if they make a next one it's way more like the original three
My only criticism is that I loved the teammates in Paper Mario much more than its sequel, especially using Bombette and bitch slapping enemies with Bow and her fan.
TTYD adds much more emotional depth to the characters though. Like Koops, who (initally) lost his father and joins Mario in order to attain the courage to avenge him; Vivian, who joins Mario- the first person to ever show her kindness; or how about Bobbery, whose partnership with Mario pulled him out of his life of depression and self-loathing and back into what he loved best?
sadly i think Mallow and Geno are properties of Squaresoft (Square/Enix) so i dont think they can appear again in a Mario RPG without collaborating with Nintendo again.

Nah, Dream Team is fine as it is. Dream Team ruined the sprites, they're not pixelated anymore. I started with Superstar Saga and went in order, Partners in Time definitely deserves to be above Dream Team.

for a moment i was gonna freak out, Super Mario RPG wasnt on the list until #1, when i saw that i was like "ok, these guys have good taste." because i cant help but agree with them on selections 5 to 1, the first 5 games on there i hadnt played yet, but the last 5 i totally have time and again, they are some of my most fave RPGs of all time.

I love both Paper Mario TTYD and Super Paper Mario best. Mr. L, Dimentio, Mimi, the music, story, and the plot twist won me over in SPM but it was SHADOW QUEEN that seriously set the bar high for Mario final bosses and is my favorite to tango with and she's in TTYD!
