To think what The Godfather is and what could have been had the Paramount "geniuses" had their way... But they had Francis Ford Coppola, a true artist, fighting for his vision. And that vision gave us Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, John Cazale, James Caan...Can there be a more perfect cast? I doubt it. What a movie.
Agreed, the cast and characters are perfect, as well as the story and direction. The novel is also really worth reading, whether you have the seen film or not
Fer Abra I thought the novel explained the scenes and both the theme and conflicts of the story more in-depth, as well as describing the characters with wonderful details
It still blows my mind that he made The Godfather and Tango in Paris within a year. Totally opposite characters. How he so naturally portrayed the age difference is a complete mystery to me.
Brando had it all. Intelligence, strength, sensitivity, extreme sensuality and under the cool exterior there was anger and passion. He brought it all to the screen. He makes it so real, you forget who he is and become totally immersed in the character and the story. He was pure genius, There are other great actors, but I don't think anyone gets close to Brando.
1) The Godfather 2) A Streetcar Named Desire 3) On the Waterfront 4) Apocalypse Now 5) The Wild One 6) Viva Zapata! 7) Julius Caesar 8) Last Tango In Paris 9) Sayonara 10) One-Eyed Jacks

+Thomas Reilly Laurence Olivier excelled in an acting approach that was already well-established; Brando helped establishing an entirely new acting approach to film acting that influenced multiple actors for years to come. And if you want to talk about one of the greatest actors in history, then I'm certain most theatre historians will mention David Garrick
One of my favourites. He behaves so naturally on screen. You can really see how his emotions switches and bubbles inside of him, he is really living the character. There are many great actors but he had something special, whenever he walked into a scene, all eyes were on him. Of course his unique attractive looks helped but it's a brutal and painful honesty in his eyes that really shined through at his best moments.
"The Wild One" is probably the most impressive. Not because it's a great film, it really isn't, but Brando is so good that he singlehandedly elevates it to high art.
Brando was poetry in motion... beautiful poetry. He had it all - looks, talent, humor, intelligence, sensuality, vulnerability - he was a beautiful soul, inside and out.
Last Tango in Paris, is not only Brando's best performance as an actor, it's also the best film he's ever been involved with. Not only is it superbly directed, it also show's Brando as who he was a person. There is loneliness hidden under impatience in his performance. He is not acting, he is performing as his emotions say he is. Absolute perfection.
I completely agree with you, and yet Brando hated doing that movie, and so did Maria Schneider too. However, I would probably have felt the same way if I was going to act in that movie; it may be beautiful, dramatic, and artistic, but the sexual scenes were so realistic that Maria felt they were completely real, almost like she felt she was really being raped. Quote from Brando regarding the movie: "Never again will I make a film like this one. For the first time, I have felt a violation of my innermost self. It should be the last time" It's nevertheless one of my favorite movies with him, and I actually like that performance much better than The Godfather.
MortyBoy15 it's strange that you said that because in one documentary, it is said Brando felt the two greatest directors he has ever been able to work with were Francis Ford Coppola and Bernardo Bertolucci. It also should be noted that although Maria Schnieder wasn't able to reconcile with the director, Brando and Bertolucci were able to be friends again in a few years. But yeah, agreed. The Godfather was a great performance and all, but Last Tango in Paris was such a realistic and painful and heartbreaking performance that it literally put me to tears.
arthousefanatic Really? I've always thought Elia Kazan and Francis Ford Coppola were his favorite directors, and that he never wanted to act in a movie like "Last Tango in Paris" again. But again, there are constantly rumors about Brando, so it's possible that you're right
Ryzen RX II when he was old he looked like a fat teddy bear and looked pretty cute, but in his 20s, 30s & 40s he looked like the sexiest man that ever lived I can say this as a straight man
One of his most excellent performances that were not mentioned here was his first motion picture role in 1950 The men, he was just perfect in that role.
Marlon Brando is the most gorgeous guy I've♥️♥️♥️ ever seen. He changed acting forever. He is the greatest actor in cinema history! There will never be another Marlon Brando in this lifetime.🙏💔🙏💔🙏
+Remy I ohh but how wrong you are... im sure in general publics eye that could be the case!! :) but any movie freak, or really anyone with adequate knowledge of movies and movie history, will remember him as the greatest cinema actor of all time who would make everything he touched magical and that his part in godfather was just one of many incredible performances he brought to the public ! :)
+Joose Pajunen I find him very fascinating and can relate to some of his views and thoughts on things. But I have only seen a handfull of films. Would you as a fan of Brando (and you seem to have knowledge about his career) give me an ultimate "must watch" list from his early days till his late career? I would appreciate it a lot!
+Filip - (Aren Bi) well the movies named here are all good (meaby add viva zapata and a few others like the fugitive kid, the young lions and you can watch his film debut the men). you get the essential ones. i would say those are good to start with !
Aside from Vito Corleone, it's certainly the one that modern audiences remember the most. Did you know that Josh Brolin took influence from Brando's portrayal of Kurtz when he played Thanos? You can see it in the way Thanos carries himself.
i have a strong connection with marlon brando though we don't know each other. i admire him as much as myself. a great human being he was and still forever.
Marlon, the number one actor and the greatest of all Times. He influenced generations of actors still today. The first to act the Stanyslawsky acting method; The only one
Favorite Brando performance: Apocalypse Now! Such a gritty, almost surreal performance speaking on how cultures die, it was and continues to be a nigh prophetic crescendo that doesn't let you go until it chooses to. Unsettlingly brilliant!
@Kelly Angel Burn I haven't seen the whole of Apocalypse Now but I have seen Kurtz's speech about horror. It's similar to the uncanny valley. In some ways Brando's TOO natural, to the point where it paradoxically makes Kurtz seem unnatural, which adds to his godlike presence. I've also seen the deleted scene where he's surrounded by children and they seem completely comfortable around him, even though he's murdered members of their tribe. To quote Heart of Darkness, which is the source material for Apocalypse Now, "No, they were not inhuman. Well, you know, that was the worst of it - this suspicion of their not being inhuman".
He was amazing in guys and dolls, no matter what people will say about him not being a singer. For a non singer he does a great job and he is just so attractive and classy in it!
Marlon was not just a professional, he created much of the styles and themes of acting, he's a legend who blessed the profession of acting and took it to another level , immortal ..
//He was one of the most talented and temperamental actors in history//.YOU ARE WRONG....!!! HE WAS ,IS & WILL BE THE NO:1 IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND...!! LOVE YOU MARLON LOVE FROM INDIA...!!!
Correction: Francis Coppola the director himself said in the Godfather reunion (45yrslater) that Brando did not give him problems at all. It was the studio execs who did!
With Brando you can't choose. The tiniest role but when he comes on you are glued to the screen and pray that it never ends As jack Nicholson said when Brando goes everyone moves up one but till movies last no one moves up. There aren't any Brandos. He is a class act, a class apart an inexplicable class by himself. He is indescribable.. Oh god the languages don't have words for gods chosen oone.
yeah just recently watched that and I love musicals. He didn't have the strongest voice but man oh man that doesn't even matter because he just oozes sensuality and charisma all over the screen. He is magnetic. I couldn't stop staring at him. "luck be a lady tooonight"
Way to make Brando look like a self-absorbed Prima Donna instead of an empathetic soul towards the Native Americans by not accepting his Oscar for Don Corleone. Well done. (Slow clap) -.-
First of all this isn't about me also you haven't proved to me that what he done changed anything and seeing as you don't know me how would u know what I done for charity
I can remember my mom talking about how she had such a big crush on Marlon Brando, and I had only ever seen The Godfather so I wasn’t really aware of what he looked like when he was younger. After seeing clips from A Streetcar Named Desire, I completely understand.😍 I mean DAYUM!!!
@@shaungreen4756 Not a bad actor? Dumbfuck, he's the greatest actor to ever live, his acting skills are unparalleled. Probably De Niro or Pacino came close, but thats about it. Nobody's on his level.
My list: 10) Viva Zapata 9) Desiree (Napoleon) 8) Julius Caesar 7) One Eyed Jacks 6) Reflections in a Golden Eye 5) Apocalypse Now 4) Last Tango in Paris 3) Godfather 2) On the Waterfront 1) Streetcar named Desire Honorable Mention: The Young Lions, The Men, Mutiny on the Bounty, The Wild One, Sayonara, Burn! and Guys & Dolls...and others. Lists are inherently stupid because nothing is definitive and everything is someone's opinion of it...so here's my opinion (a longtime connoisseur of films, especially Brando's) based solely on his performance in it.
Thank you for not putting The Godfather as #1. People always seem to associate Marlon Brando with that movie and forget that he had a plethora of great performances
Brando's top 5 performances are some of the best acting performances of all time. I don't see very many people playing a Paul or a Vito or a Stanley better than the GOAT himself.
His performance in ‘On The Waterfront’ is the high watermark in acting in motion picture history. He’s the greatest actor, Male or female in the history of cinema, silent and talkies. No one will ever surpass him. He’s the greatest there ever was, is or will ever be
I saw the first film Brando made, The Men and thought he was good but it was Brando's performance in a Streetcar Named Desire that blew me away. Phenomenal performance. You look at his landmark films: Streetcar, Zapata, Waterfront, Godfather, Tango, etc...it's easy to see why he's regarded as the greatest actor to have ever lived. I just wish he took acting seriously as he aged. So many great roles he passed on. I guess everyone has to carve out their own path in life. Still a great body of work by a great actor.
You forget “ The Men “ (1950)where he plays a bitter, paralyzed war-veteran. From director Fred Zinneman who later directed classics like High Noon and The Day Of The Jackal (adapted from Frederic Forsyth’s classic novel). Marlon does a great perfomance in what is, if i’m right, his first feature in film.
I am so happy i read this comment! Most people say Streetcar was his first feature, but they often over look The Men, and his performance is amazing there too.
sai srinivas I know him. I’m cinephile man and I have watched thousands of movies. I've watched movies in many countries, especially from India, Germany, Italy and France, Greece, etc. Yeah he is good but he can’t touch the greatest Americans / English actors. He’s not even the greatest actor in India's history man. It’s a blaspheme to compare him to Brando and de Niro. 😛
sai srinivas I have watched many,it’s not even close. He can’t touch Brando’s performances. Okay, you are from India, but clam down dude. You can’t compare Brando who changed the cinema with mohanlal. Jesus. Yeah and his roles was different but he acts similar...
I've always felt The Young Lions gets overlooked when praising his filmography. His German accent is incredible and his performance--like so many others --is a work of art.
"Now we got here In the state of Louisiana what's known as the Napoleonic code. Now according to that, what belongs to the wife belongs to the husband and vice versa"
Great list.... completely agree with it. Waterfront, Godfather and Streetcar could have been ranked 1A, 1B and 1C. To me they are all equally excellent.
Marlon is arguably the GOAT because he rewrote the game of acting like what Bob Dylan did it in the pop culture. Besides, during the post-Brando era actors like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman or even Jack Nicholson, all of them became actors because of Marlon Brando. Then, those who studied in the Actors Studio, always saw Marlon as a father figure, so that's why they all are Brando's children.
Though its popular to refer to Brando and De Niro as Method actors. Method acting is associated with Lee Strasberg. Brando, however, was Stella Adler's protege and even lived with her and her husband Harold Clurman to work on his craft. She was strongly opposed to Lee Strasberg's method, which was based heavily on emotional memory. Her technique was more directly influenced by Stanislavski, whom she studied with in Paris. Stanislavski had experimented with emotional memory, but then rejected it. De Niro also studied with Stella, though not as her protege. By contrast, Al Pacino studied with Strasberg and obviously used his Method to great success. Strasberg too was a fine actor as can be seen in Godfather 2.
When I was up in NYC just a few days ago I was going through Hell's Kitchen and walked by the old Actor's Studio building and the first thing I thought of was Brando in 'Streetcar', If I had a time machine I'd want to to see that premier with him in it on stage more than anything else. I just can't imagine the New York theatre and Broadway scene without him and the impact that he had on it.
@Teringventje He was considered to be too good to play 007,so someone suggested putting him in a movie as either 008 or 001-they put those 2 numbers forward because they weren't sure which of them would be seen by the general public as the number most superior to the number 007.
