I agree, Carrum is the best station in Melbourne, the views are amazing. But if you draw a slightly longer bow, and head to country Victoria, have a look at Ballarat train station. It is worth a trip just to see this station. It’s an older 1880’s station, well looked after and even has a public bar on the platform.
I love Jolimont not so much because of the station but for the walk up the ramp and getting to the top and seeing the MCG before descending down past the statues. Never get tired of that walk.
I think Box Hill station should have been on the list, simple layout, spacious platforms, completely sheltered, easy access to shops and food courts, and a nearby bus stop and tram stop, you can go almost anywhere in Melbourne from Box Hill.
I wouldn’t have predicted Carrum would be your number 1. But it also reinforces my personal point of view that it would’ve been good if Bonbeach, Chelsea and Edithvale were elevated stations instead of trenches. With the railway line so close to the bay it would’ve been a nice view from all the stations I mentioned.
Carrum had unstable ground due to being so close to the water..and the bridge had to get over the waterway...which rendered being underground not workable
Nice one. I have to admit that I am a little bit dissapointed thatJacana and Albion didn't get a mention. In my opinion, they are the epitome of modern train station design.
Personally I like the stations from Hawksburn, Toorak , Armadale, and Malvern. All built at the same time with the same red brick architecture, and wrought iron shelters. They are over 100 years old and still in excellent condition. The trenches are more attractive too, mostly earth and covered in trees and plants. The new trenches at Glen Huntly and Ormond are not very attractive imo, with the high concrete walls, and box section steel braces.
Years ago I travelled daily from Tecoma into the city. Such peaceful place and I will never forget the fragrance of the hills when returning in the early evening.
hey. just wanted to let you know. i appreciate your contribution . Melbourne is a great city and has a rich history, the public transport system is a part of it . well done.
Me: "Hey I sure hope Werribee line gets on the list somehow" "Retaining the sea theme, we move across the bay to Seaholme" Me: *Unholy screeching in happiness due to it being one of my favorite stations due to associated memories* Edit 8 months later: Williamstown is such a nice station, and a candidate for 11th-20th imo. Really peaceful, surrounded by parkland and close to the district that feels rustic, similar to Flinders Street. There's a reason I love using it when going home from doing stuff in Williamstown
@@melbournerailwayvideos In commute time with buses it's also the closest station to me. Beats out Altona by a couple of minutes, and Newport by about 10-15 minutes. I love Seaholme's peaceful atmosphere and its proximity for Altona North residents as well as Seaholme and Altona residents
A worthy top 10. My local of Mooroolbark is a pretty good station for similar reasons to Heatherdale, and certainly a leap forward from the old station.
Macleod near Latrobe is also quite a peaceful station. I wouldn’t call it underused but it’s also very green like Tacoma and doesn’t look like it’s changed much for years. I quite like quaint appeal it has. It’s also only one stop up from Rosanna. However, it’s probably got one of the most dangerous crossings on the network still intact. I believe it’s a fairly blind corner with no alarms or gates to stop people crossing. It probably should be addressed soon. Same goes for needing to cross the lines to change platforms even if those are gated.
I’d love a rehash of this once the Metro Tunnels are open! Love and agree with all the detailing you’ve gone through regarding general aesthetic, accessibility, etc… keep em coming!
@@melbournerailwayvideos Oh ok. Its one of the 3 stations I worked at voluntarily in the early 80s, pulling the destination signs down or hanging them up at. Others being Jolimont & West Richmond. And I had a key to lock/unlock the gates when trains came and went regarding checking tickets. Its was fun. VR had no idea I was doing it. 😉
@@bluehuerue6893 Tecoma has no 'next train' electronic info board nor block control signal lamps (up or down lines). Does Ashburton or Alamein have them?
I think Epping or South Morang should have got a mention. Clearly the best stations because of their Absolutely wonderful scenery and friendly locals /s
Completely disagree. You justifying the views from a platform is utter nonsense. One doesn't stand on a train platform for its views - one hopes the train will be there in 1 or 2 minutes, not to sit there as if having a picnic. It's an absolute disgrace what has been done with those concrete bridges. Gee - I wonder why in the richer suburbs they went under rather than over. A great example is Surry Hills/Mont Albert. Could you imagine Union station being built like these monstrous bridges in the South East? Apart from rail geeks, no one wants to see or hear trains - they're a form of transport. The South East has been ruined for generations now as it will take generations for them to be replaced by a more civilised, underground solution as it should have been from the start. Not impressed.
its a very interesting video i lived in melbourne for two years three years ago .during the renovation train line railway they did a really god job its fantastic im very very happy its a modern and cutting edge city 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😇😇😇😇😇
@@melbournerailwayvideos I'm from Adelaide but I just happened to be there for the open day and the station looked great. It's got great views of the Dandenong ranges
Enjoyed your video, I have a family member over there right now and trying to get them Yo take some clips snd photos of some of the trains. They won’t. Flinders station is impressive. Maybe one of these days I will get over there. Thank you for sharing.
that Briton platform was to be a loop line from Cheltenham as for the rest of your comments it shows how young you are that you don't appreciate old architecture most LCR stations are cold and soulless designed so that people don't get exposed to any possible sun just stainless steel and concrete no aesthetics what so ever
heatherdale's definitely one of my favourites. i've had no business to get off at heatherdale until recently and it's really grown on me since. so happy to see it make this list!!
A little confusing the criteria. I get the other vid regarding 'cover' for rain...do you know how many 100+ year old gum trees were cut down by Daniel Andrews to build that monstrosity? Shame on you, brother.
Newport also has steep ramps and multiple underpasses Also from an Altona North commuter standpoint, I'm not spending 25 minutes on a bus + the wait time just to get to Newport when going to Altona and catching the train there takes the same or less time often to get to Newport, coffee be damned
Cant believe you didnt put in Aircraft 🙂 - here's chatgpt's take on it "Ah, the marvelously paradoxical 'Aircraft' train station, where the absence of facilities is truly an avant-garde artistic statement in passenger inconvenience! Here, one can bask in the sheer minimalist charm of no seating, no information boards, and no restrooms, allowing travelers to immerse themselves fully in a truly authentic 'back-to-basics' experience. "
Preston. Level crossing removal turned it from a boxy concrete job into a giant liquorice allsort. As well as having a decent amount of cover upstairs, there’s a sheltered waiting room inside & the skyrails provide shelter for anyone just waiting to cross the road. It’s one of the rare manned suburban stations, which is handy if you actually like talking to people. My only gripe is that the entrances are on the side and that there isn’t a third exit directly towards the market.
I agree. I went to Preston not long after it opened, as was perplexed that they didn't design it so you could just head straight out to the market, which would be a significant trip generator for the station.
1) I definitely will! 2) I'll think about it. I don't have heaps of time to make higher effort videos like that, but I feel like it would be a fun video to make!
Coburg’s single platform is indicative of the decades of neglect and that the Upfield line was slated for closure so didn’t attract any improvements and all those wooden gates were kept operating because of under-investment. Many wooden gates were abolished in the ‘60s and ‘70s except for the Upfield line which was going to close (now saved). Perversely, I’m glad many wooden gates survived as preserved artifacts. I was particularly irritated at the cost cutting thinking that stopped all Upfield trains after 7pm for decades. I was able to use the Sydney Rd tram which is why they did it, there was talk of re-routing the Sydney Rd trams along the rail corridor like the Port Melbourne line. I’m not sure why the closure didn’t go ahead as a succession of governments rode roughshod over public opinion and did what they wanted anyway.
Check out Union station Mont Albert I’ve been told it cost 1.4B dollars to complete 🤮 apart from Southern Cross station I would say it’s the best station in Victoria with a small commuter base.
I agree with Carrum - it's super relaxing just to sit on the platform and enjoy the view. Honestly, it wouldn't be a bad place for a picnic :) Mentone is similar in design and they kept the old style station building in a nearby park. For old school style stations, I like Sandringham, Ripponlea and Williamstown. Fun fact: Williamstown and Glen Iris each have 3 stations in the same suburb :) Heyington station is also in a lovely location by the river and the stairs going down make you feel like you're on a walk, not going to the station.
@@melbournerailwayvideos Exactly. I have friends that live in Edithvale and they were hoping the line would be elevated instead of trenched. They had a lot to saw about the new station's flaws. Lack of shade, narrow footpaths, poor sightlines, complicated station access, and crossing Station St and Nepean Hwy as a pedestrian still takes 2 cycles of the traffic lights.
i would like to see a video of potential new station video. some suggestions include reopening discontinued stations such as Clyde, Tooradin and Koo Wee Rup on the Cranbourne line that continued part of old line due to the home develops in the area. Cranbourne East is also a factor since its is on the same old railway line (could be an under line station due to Casey fields)
Glad Carnegie got a run! I find it interesting as a daily user of the station that it seems significant dirtier than Murrumbeena. A few of these newer stations need a pressure wash!
Brighton Beach is two faced. In summer it's lovely, although the temptation to jump on Slack and say you'll be working from the beach today is great. In winter, I'm sure it's the most miserable railway station in Melbourne.
Good point, and you can say the same thing about Carrum I reckon. I just like focusing on the good, but it would be bitterly cold and wild at times during winter!
Wow! Conurbation looks so different holy crap! Haven’t been off that station since probably around 2012-2014. I didn’t realise it got a makeover, I just thought it was Moreland station. Wow has time flown by. I remember it’s old crappy look and was easier to k ow where to get off. Seeing this new look is making feel where the heck is Bell Street haha 😆 😅
Coburg used to be my station before I moved to Central Victoria. Very pleasantly surprised by the new overpass station. It’s beautiful! The walking/cycling path has always been there. It goes alongside the rail from Princes Park. I used to race the train as the distances between stations are not that far and level crossing stopped traffic giving the bike path a clear run. There will be more great stations like ANZAC.
Carrum is a lovely view and overall a net positive upgrade for the network but unfortunately the traffic didn’t reduce as expected and the skyrail does mean opposite buildings lose any view of the beach. Aesthetically it’s excellent for most though
The same can be said about many level crossing removals. The program has a specific intention of removing the crossing, and although sometimes they do even more than that, they're not always as diligent as they should be about fixing traffic. It's a shame, but obviously their budget is finite and they have an awful lot on their plate already, I reckon.
I know it’s a controversial one, but I like the new Union Station. I like the design of the southern cross station rebuild. Sadly not around to remember the old spencer Street station. But in reality, I don’t like anything else about it.
It's too smelly, it's closed for the night network because it was privatised, it doesn't have a good selection of shops. It could be so much better than what it is!
Clayton is good but it doesn’t have a rear exit like at Carnegie, only one front exit. There is a rear exit but can only be used for emergencies They didn’t put barriers at the rear so can’t use the rear which is a shame because it’s closer to the car park (and my home!)
